After just watching the last challange, I have too join this time!
It´s a bit late maybe, and I´ve got alot more to do on him before he´s finished, but I´ll try to get him ready on time...

I modeled the head for a diffrent project a while ago, but it will hardly be visible in the final version anyway!

your model is really cool ,the face look like frankenstein ...which weapon you will give to this fella ?

Jonas
02-14-2002, 09:43 PM
Hmmm, I really don´t know what kind of weapon he will have. But I do have some ideas!

And yes, It´s supose to be frankenstein/Boris Karloff.

nice to see yet another swedish talent on the board :)
great modeling, texturing, style, nothing to criticise. the textured version is my preferer.

WOW.... i'm not really sure what you could add to the textured version. maybe that backpack again. The skin texture is awesome. Very "Brom" :)

Get the gimp!

This is slick. Great textures and overall design. The only thing that furrows my brow are the shoes. They seem to be flattened hexagons. I think with all of the detail you put into everything else, your guy's shoes could use a touch more.

Other than that, I think this is my favorite model and texture job. It's very subtle and graceful execution. Great job!

Oh! Replys! I Like!
And thanks for all the kind words! :D

Taoizm: I might add that backpack, but i think a have to redesign it a little first...

ACFred: The shoes are just boxes for now, I will modell them later... I really hate modelling shoes...

Really nice model. Your character looks very well modelled. Is it possible to see a wireframe version of your character. What software did you use to model it ? Is it polygons ?

The textured version really give him a BROMish look.

Can't wait to see your character in a nice pose.

Keep up the good work man.

I thought my stuff was finally starting to look halfway OK till I saw your stuff. Now it looks like doodoo, especially my hurried mapping.

At first glance I thought it was a new Brom painting versus a 3d model - a huge compliment! Anyway, super tight stuff, thanks for the inspiration/motivation. Eagerly look forward to updates.

PS - Any tips/tricks on mapping would be greatly appreciated - I'm hurting!

Jonas
02-20-2002, 01:44 PM
Thanks for all replys. And yes: Brom Rules!

walee: I use 3dsmax and polygons only ( I hate nurbs, at least in max). Rendered using the default Scanline renderer i 3dsmax.

YemYam: My only texturing tip is Reference material, and lots of it too!
Btw like your spider/robot/woman, crasy design and details!

Gabe: Weapon... I was thinking Flame thrower, anyone else got a suggestion?

I totally agree with you : NURBS in 3dsmax sucks ! Polygon rules :) !!!

I think that the flame thrower is a good idea, it will match the style of your character.

The fold of the clothes were made using a bump map ?

oh and I forgot to mention : really clean mesh !!!

Carny
02-20-2002, 03:53 PM
Great work dude! =)
The design reminds me at Brom ;] I like that!
The white skin and the Veins.. and dresses in the black Leather. Really cool!:D

YemYam
02-20-2002, 06:10 PM
So do you collapse the mesh smooth in then apply displace to get the cloth textures? Very nice mesh.

Koma
02-20-2002, 06:47 PM
yes the flame thrower its a good idea ,you can go check this really cool to : http://www.berettausa.com/guns/field_guns/a391xtrema/index.html or ...oups i dont know the name ,my memory fail ,anyway i put a image attachements about what iam talking this kind of weapon can make a pretty nice look to .

Very nice, my only crit would be unless that is a child's head (which would be really disturbing) it looks too small. And if it's an adult head I don't think he would be able to palm it (unless he's Michael Jordan sized). So maybe make the head bigger and have him holding it by the hair ...

Just a thought, really nice stuff again.

malcolm
02-21-2002, 08:15 PM
Nice one Jonas,
My only suggestion at his point would that you should a bit more deyailing in the gun, perhaps some specular highlights too ???

Danko
02-21-2002, 08:22 PM
Wow...
The weapon is a bit dark to see but nevertheless, don't even need to see it with such a masterpiece of character. Great modeling and great textures! I love this one, congratulations for the big job! :)
Bytheway, cloth wrinkles are made using a displacement map over the meshsmoothed character? I just ask it because the wireframe looks so clean that this has really impress me.

Jonas
02-21-2002, 08:27 PM
sorry YemYam, but It´s a child´s head (It´s one of our game characters) ... and I agrée it´s really disturbing.
No offence i hope...

/J

YemYam
02-21-2002, 08:31 PM
No offense taken ... check out my latest post ... my artistic tastes lean on the dark side as well. Not that I condone lopping off children's heads - I've got a kid myself and I like his head attached :) .

Jonas
02-21-2002, 08:32 PM
Danko: Yes it´s a displace modifier on top of the stack using existing uvw mapping. You can do this by material also, but i prefer using this method.

/J

Jonas
02-21-2002, 08:40 PM
YemYam: I truly agree. And I understand that some might take offence (I might if i had a child), happy that you didn´t though.

And I must say your profile head image with that nasty eye is pretty sick too! But I Like!

a very good update, another time
but i don' t like the head in the hand ! it' s too little ?
maybe it' s a child or doll ?
the arm with a gun really look nice

DAVID LOPEZ
02-21-2002, 09:26 PM
I´m agree with Patrick

If it´s a child head you have to remark this. Maybe with a lace or plaits.

And the way he hold on the head, it seems the head don´t have weight. Maybe holding it by the hair woul be more natural.

The rest is absolutely perfect.

Danko
02-21-2002, 09:29 PM
Thanks a lot for the info on the cloths wrinkles mate! ;) I have to try this, I liked a lot the result you achieved. Bytheway, I neither find that head more offending than a terror film scene can be, I mean, is just a CG and everybody should differentiate that from an "usual" attitude ;) . You should maybe write down like in the films credits " Any similarity with reality is a pure coincidence "... just kidding ;p

the expression you got in the hands are awesome

YemYam
02-22-2002, 02:02 AM
Jonas, thought I would ask you since you are an experienced max guy (anyone else can join in as well).

In a max mat at the sub level (a difuse bitmap for example) does it help to take the default 1.0 blur down to .1? It seems to make it subtly cleaner, although I've heard different opinions on how/when/what it's used for.

Also, what method are you using to apply your uvws? Sub object uvws or multiblender or something else? Your mapping is tight as F so you must have picked up some techniques along the way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jonas
02-22-2002, 03:44 AM
YemYam: There no "Right" setting. I always play around with the blur and blur offset parameters.

I use UVW map and UVW Unwrap to map my models. There´s a lot of tutorials on internet, I post you a link tomorrow.

This is super pretty. The only thing that I could say as a crit would be that the light from the eyes is making the head ( the one on attached to a neck) look flatter than the rest of the image. Its probably accurate in terms of what light would naturally do but ...forget it , its perfect:D

02-22-2002, 06:04 PM
Excellent display of your character! Everything is spot on I think. I don't have any real critique so I'll just nitpick...maybe try to bring out the form of the gun a bit more with some rimlighting?

Yemyam: I also think it's a good idea to bring the blur down. This seems to especially be the case with renderers that do adaptive AA like finalRender, Brazil, VRay, MR, etc. In fact I suspect that one of the many reasons for the typical "max look" is the blurred AA you often get. If you turn down texture blur and turn on adaptive AA you get much crisper detail.

I've even heard that Brazil really does this internally already (by not considering the blur value) but I can't confirm it.

Thanks Jonas and Wiro for the comments on the blur. I've been reading up on it quite a bit on the web and in max books but sometimes it's hard to boil it all down. When I see people like you getting such excellent results then I always want to get your opinion. I'm sure a HUGE part of it is experience (which I need more of) so I'll keep hacking away at it.

Thanks again.

good work with textures too. what software you're using?

MadS
02-22-2002, 11:57 PM
This has to be my favorite so far. It's dark. It's gritty. It's beautiful and sadistic. Reminds me of Brom. And since I am a big Brom fan, it's not hard to see why I like it. I do think you can play with the lighting a little more, especially on the gun. He could also use a few more accessories too. We want details! Oh, and I'f like to see him animated a little at least.

Bravo!

[msf]
02-23-2002, 12:21 AM
just wondering, why does it have to be a childs head? For a game? maybe I missed something. I think a charred skull with some spinal chord still attached would be more fitting for the picture. Considering your not gonna find to many unprotected children running around and they would have a mask on or something sense it is post nuclear, so you wouldnt be able to its face. I dunno the head just took away from the whole image for me.

Doesnt disturb me or anything just seemed like your trying a little to hard for creepy.

Looks very good!
I bit to evil for me, but the pic looks excellent!
I think his wrist is a little odd. The one that holds the head. It looks like you placed only a hand in the brace.
Could be the shadows...
And his thumb on the gun-hand looks a little different than the rest of his fingers.
Could be the perspective...
I like the lighting very much, only the gun is to dark, you can't see any detail.
But GREAT work man! ;)

Excelent hands and head.
The design of the cloths are amazing too. Great textures.
I don't like very much the glow of his goggles and the floor, it distorts the perspective.

Finally, why don't you add blood! It would be terrorific! :)

MadS
02-26-2002, 08:17 PM
This is exactly the kind of evil shit that I like. Excellent job. The thumb on the gun hand is buggin me. It needs to grip the gun more, I think. The wrists also look like they could either be widened or use some very slight underlighting. I'm not too fond of his blocky feet, but you've covered them up with blurs, so it's minor. And I know this has been said before, but the head looks like it's missing something... like a spinal cord? It just looks too clean. Maybe if you had some dripping blood into a small puddle on the ground?

GREAT work! You got my vote.

this is perfect. you defenitly deserve to win this challenge. I love your dark look and your skinning is amazing (especially the char skin). Your model is so clean. Did you model the legs and rest of the body under the clothes? If so could you render them out. Also I would love to see a none smooted reder? Are you a pro, because if not you should be. This is one of the best 3d charcters or anything 3d that I have ever seen. God that is wonderful.

Hello,

very good modeling and texturing...

but, the weapon is too standard and is not useful to cut off the head of someone (even is own head)... :-)
so, if this inspire you, you can put a scythe in the other hand (the left one - without weapon) and suspend the head with a hook or whatever you want...

the scythe idea was already proposed, and i think it's a good one. I got it too. :-)

thanks for this piece of art,

I love it very much and really dont have much to critique about it. As far as the people saying something about the little spikes coming out of his arms acting like head cutters, well I love it! The way my mind thinks I can see him being trained enough to not cut himself and work around them like any good warrior etc. with a samuri, as well as my sadistic side :D , sees him taking his time cutting off the heads, those appendages are small, sharp, and sweet, might as well take your time when your that guy, great work!

hi Jonas,

I have say it is such a beautiful work you have here. I personally love the sense of darkness which really draws my attention into the picture. the textures on the model are amazing. The skin tone contrasts against with the background vividly. The only thing keeps me away from thinking it as a beautiful painting is the shadow. I am guessing a softer (more realistic) shadow could soften the transition of the character and background. just a thought tough :) after all, it still startling me.
