View Full Version : Short animated episodes with Ricky Gervais
MattEveritt 04-21-2005, 10:56 AM hello cgtalkers
A while ago i was bored at work and was listening to old episodes of Ricky Gervais on London radio station XFM. A snippet of audio caught my ear so i chopped it into a wav file and started doing a quick anim in my lunch break. It seemed to look ok so i thought why not send it over to his agent and see if they like it. I got a phone call from Ricky a few days later saying that he loved the anim so we met up for a chat and i started doing some more short episodes using his voice and that of Steven Merchant and Karl Pilkington who he appeared with on the show.
Since then i've created several episodes, some relying solely on the dialogue and some only taking a single word. A clever friend of mine gave me some help with the fur and rendering and there are now 4 episodes for your perousal.
They can be viewed here rickygervais.com (http://www.rickygervais.com/bears3.php)
Episode 1 was the initial animation i did and i've kind of been experimenting with what works and what doesnt since then.
There are some Hi-res versions on the way soon so hang on to your hats.
--edit--
we now have hi-res clips - right click save target as.

great stuff Matt, very funny, the characters and animation are pretty good.
Very good idea, did u actually pitch it to them??
my only comment would be about the IK on the arms, sometimes the hands just get pinned in mid air, not moving with body, also when holding onto desk, sometimes the body is moving a lot but the hands are stuck to the desk not moving at all.
Cheers

Thanks a lot for the comments
My computer just returned from the doctors (it's been very unwell) and i'll be making a start on some new episodes soon. It would be ideal to release new ones on a regular basis but as always its just finding the time/energy to get them done.
Ta.
The instant whipping out of the lollipop & mittens made me laugh like a greased chimp! Also the fur (especially the rim lighting on the Rock episode) looks absolutely top notch.
Excellent stuff (although given where you work - I'm not surprised!)

These are great !
The voices are nice, and his laugh is so communicative ( not sure about this word in english).
First I didn't understand what he says on the "mittens" but just his laugh make me laugh too.
The facial is well done even without mouth.
I didn't understand why the purple bear shakes his hand on the "y-front" episode.
I'm waiting for more episode for sure !
these are the best, can't wait to see more..

To answer a few questions:
These were entirely done in 3Dsmax. Mr Wibble (Matt Everitt) conceived and then animated all the shots after listening to the Xfm radio shows. Matt then asked me to add a visual flair to his originals, so I went in and slightly adjusted the the bears, added their fur, the backgrounds and then lit the scenes. The fur is created with Hairfx (formerly shag:hair), and is very quick to render and manage. No other plugins were used.
There are 2 other episodes currently in the works.. stayed tuned
Cheers,
skull_leader
04-22-2005, 01:01 AM
Great work! I really look forward to the next two episodes.
I have just one question... how many days (i.e. 8 hours in a day) does it take for you to create one episode on average?
Tughan
04-22-2005, 01:02 AM
These bears are so cute and so funny. No one can beat that two combinations. :)

Hi Skull_leader
In answer to your question about time its a bit difficult to answer. I've spent countless hours sifting through all the dialogue of the guys, chopping out bits that i like even if i'm not sure that i can do anything with them. Once i've got an idea the actual animation time would be a few days per episode once you add it all together. The difficult thing is to make them readable (cos of the big heads and small fingerless arms) but not overly animated. I'm a big fan of trying to animate with very simple characters. The quicker you can get stuffed rigged and start animating the better.
As for all the clever stuff that goes on once i've done animating i'm sure it takes Matt C next to no time at all. He's a clever b**ger and a fast worker once you get him out of the pub.
Cheers

Hey Matt hows it going?
Seeing as i'm not selling the rights for a company to do whatever they want with the characters I'll stay in control of the Bears destiny (insert evil laugh here)
I was thinking more The White Stripes than 2 Unlimited...Although what about...er...The Bear Stripes? Doing a cover of Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now? It just might work.
About the creative control good on ya, and I think rock teddies would er.. rock! Anything as long as its not europop :)

Brilliant! :D
If you're still in contact with The Gervais, you could make use previewed clips from 'Extras' which comes out this Thursday and beat the rush. :) Or some classic moments from The Office - what I'd give to see that bear doing The Dance. :D
