hey guys im new to this forum and i only been in maya a few days. sumone sent me a mesh of a head and i was wondering how i would lower the polygon count on it because the geometry is quite high and difficult to work with. thx

If you're animating face shapes, there's no easy way out of this one; I'd recommend rebuilding the model using the unwieldy one as reference.

You'll never get a clean mesh by poly-reduction or decimation tools.

Hi there,

yea,,you will have to re-build it, plain and simple. It's called bad modelling when the geo is to high and you can't work with it.

thx for the responses guys yeah this thing is masssive , so hard to make noticeble changes in the facial features...well i guess ill have to do that...thx :airguitar

might want to check that your source doesnt have a low-poly hull that was used to provide a smoothed version you've ended up with? does it look like a smoothed result? also, you might consider using the poly reduction tools (suss out progressiveMesh plug on highend3d) to get a gneral cage you could clean up a little then use as a wrap if rebuilding will take to long or be difficult to capture the detail of the current mesh. depends what your requirements are.
