I heard that Max7 has a hair and cloth built in the program now. If this is true, where would I be able to find them? I believe I have seen some video files at Discreets website but I cannot seem to find those either. I did a search CGTalk and found a tutorial
(http://www.redpixel.com.br/vtdetails.asp?ref=v075) that does not use a plugin for Max6 but I have been having trouble viewing the video. Most of the tutorials I did find were for Shag. I do not want to use a plugin for this, I would like to achieve the hair and clothing only by using what 3ds has to offer.

I am trying to see what would be my best option for making hair and clothing. I know it would take sometime to figure out. I need to make Would anyone have any suggestions, comments on this.

Thank you in advance.

In order to use them you have to be a part of the Autodesk Subscriber Program (previously known as the 'Discreet Subscriber Program'). This is a yearly subscription fee that you pay that gives you free Max upgrades and access to learning materials, and that sort of thing. The hair and cloth simulation stuff is part of the subscriber service. I forget how much it is but it's not cheap (i think it's something like $500 for the year, but I could be way off on that).

It's speculated pretty heavily that both the hair and cloth stuff will be fully integrated in Max 8 though. Alternatively you can still buy cloth seperately from here (http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/208091). I'm not sure about the hair stuff though, as I think it wasn't supported for Max before Discreet/Autodesk got their hands on it, but again, not sure about that.

Thank you, Headless.
I could wait till Max8 but then who knows when that will come out. Would you happen to know of any tips or tutorials or a way to approach making hair? Without using plugins? Is it possible? I am being told to use Maya for hair and fur, which I do not really want to.

Well thank you again,

Well that depends on what type of hair you want to make. If you're just looking to make a short and fairly rigid hairstyle then the most straightforward way to do it is to get a hair texture with alpha mapped transparency and apply it to a plane, then duplicate that plane a whole load of times and place each one randomly over the surface of the head. If you're doing longer hair you could use a similar method but with longer planes draped down the side of the head and then add some basic animation via a lattice.

If you want something more complex then there's a way of doing hair using Particle Flow, but i'm not quite sure how people go about doing that. If you do a search on it you should be able to find something.
