View Full Version : Scanline Renderer Translucency!
Wahooney 04-20-2005, 07:43 AM Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the horrible artifacts caused by shadows on objects using the Translucency shader in the Scanline Renderer?

I'm guessing you're using shadow maps, right? (you shouldn't get those artifacts with raytraced materials)
There seems to be three things that you can do to help reduce the artifacts in these cases: Use a smoother model, increase the "sample range" from the "shadow map params" rollout, and possibly use a larger map size for your shadow map (again, shadow map params rollout).

Increasing the sample rate and/or map size only reduces the effect, it doesn't get rid of it
and raytraced shadows are quite expensive
So I guess it's a case of one or t'other...
Thanks.

Yeah, it does only reduce it. But with a map resolution of 1600, and a sample range from 10-15, you really shouldn't be seeing much of the artifacts at all. And if that's not enough, how about rendering out a shadows pass, and cleaning it up in post with a little blurring?
