View Full Version : New animation WIP
Wilson-3d 04-20-2005, 02:52 AM Hi. This is Friedhelm - my latest character. I am just running him through some scenarios to get the ball rolling.
I have not had a chance to show this to anyone yet and could sure use some crits on the keys poses and timing.
The keys are still linear so I have not started to add the ease ins and outs that will come with spline interpolation in the graph editor. *Also I have not added the follow through of the wrist elbow head back ect. *I am looking at key poses and timing. I can still go in and change poses and timing easily. I am going to add in some shaking in his knees when he is supporting his weight against the wall but am waiting until after I have offset keys. With all that said I don't want to seem like I am not leaving room for good advice I just wanted to let you know what phase of the animation I am in.
Thanks a lot for any cirts!! *I could sure use some input.

hi wilson,
nice timing! it reads clearly...but I don't understand why he slides and then falls down at the end.
okay, crits:
-when he brings the hand to the lips, change the body's pose just a smidge
-the walk feels wierd weight-wise, but I don't know if that's just because of where you are with the blocking process
-change the body positon a bit...move the center of gravity side to side a bit as the feet line up to peek around the corner
-as he lifts the foot to step towards the final peek pose, counterbalance the body back for the lift.
great start!

Thanks a lot for the crit monstersauce. Lots of good points. I especially saw the center of gravity issue you mentioned when I looked at it again.
This is an update with follow through added and poses tweaked. The keys are still linear and I will add in the ease ins and outs next. I am tweaking poses and movement some. Friedhelm is 67 years old and is suppose to be sliding down the wall because he can't support himself. I hope that is easier to read now with the knees shaking.
I have had some comments on the walk looking stiff. It is an old man shuffle but I think it still needs tweaks. Any advice?
I would appreciate any crits.
Thanks a lot.

nice stuff,
the knee shaking definately makes that more read-able! good idea : )
the height his feet fly up pre-drop is a little strange-particularly the camera-left one, it reads like a "jump" fall rather than a "my legs can't support me anymore and just gave out completely" fall perhaps they should overlap his body position instead of shooting up really fast.
the old guy shuffle is reading weird because his steps are so big...if you could fit 4 steps instead of 2 and have them be small steps, more like an old guy shuffle, you might get more of the feeling you're going for.

Thanks monstersause! I appreciate the crits. I have been working on a shuffle in a different file and think I was out of my mind when I said that in the last one(end of a late night animating). This is more of an old man sneak. He is not flexible enough to get the long strides and back arces of some of them in the animators survival kit (the character-not the rig). So I have been trying to get the look of a sneak from an old man.
I have all the keys as spline now and am just getting started on easing in and out of the poses and movements. Then on to the face and eyes.
I am not sure what you mean by overlap the body position. I'll give it a shot-just not sure.
Thanks again for the crits.
All crits and comments welcome!!

Thanks for the input vivec. I did go in and tweak the roll. Well here is my latest version. It is pretty much finished. Now I need some hardcore critiques so I can go in and make it better. I would like to put this on my reel and have seen it way too much.
Thanks for any crits. I would really like some input to try and take this to the next level.

Here is another update. I have been working on another animation with Friedhelm and it has been nice to be able to take a few days working on a diff animation and then come back to this one with a fresh set of eyes.
I added a head shake at the end that I think I should take out and just leave the hand gesture to Trotter his pet turkey. How does everything read? Do you get what is going on? Does it read as a fall at the end?
Thanks a lot for any comments and crits!!
