View Full Version : Backwards nonsense with Extrude?

does this look right? it certainly seems annoying...and how can i correct this? The only solution is that i have to reverse the normals of one face so that when i "move compent along" the normals i can actually get the edges to move together. It seems backwards actually. If i am in global mode they move together but i can no longer translate along the normals! I notice that if i use the move tool in normals mode that it works correctly. So why should it not work properly when i want to extrude edge or move component??

edges being moved in opposite directions with "move compent" tool....the same problem happens when i extrude edge. somehow maya reverses the normals....even though the normals are displayed correctly.

same thing. .....

the workaround is to move the vertices in normals mode.....but u can imagine the pain in the arse if u have to multiple extrude edges n faces along their normals....and then reselect their vertices and then use the normal move tool to correct this oppositional behaviour.

nobody knows why this happens? i

There was another post on something similar to this a while back. It could be to do with your face normals; make sure they're all aligned. Also you have checked, "keep faces together", right?

Find the other post, I think the solution was to do with the extrusion manipulator? (press 't'). Otherwise, when weird things happen with extrude, I usually try pulling the other axes out instead of the one you think "should" give you the correct results.

cheers.....

the keep faces together does not apply to this problem because the edges will still go in opposite directions. what u see in the pictures IS the manipulator tool.

You can see in the picture that the normals are aligned properly....the problem is that when i extrude, somehow the normals are reversed on the newly created poly....which is why the edges go in opposite directions in the first place.

One solution i have found is to reverse the normals to the wrong direction of one of the faces before i extrude....that way when the extrude is done, it is reversed automatically. But this seems to be a bug no?

the other solution is to go into global mode by cliking the blue dot....and manually moving the extruded edges....but then they are no longer being moved along their normals.

its vert ordering too that determines local axis im afraid :(
bit of a large poo bum. and no, im afraid again, you cant change vert indices in a hurry. frustrating, isnt it !? :insane:

perhaps someone has some neat work abouts?

:annoyed: and nowhere do i see in the interface on how to change the vert order. :annoyed:

thats because you cant, certainly not through the interface... you need to rebuild meshes to do so, as far as i understand it (and itd be an API or MEL hack job .... recent plug released called Reconstruct Mesh, to match indices, has managed to do reordering).

well i will have to give it a shot then
