hey all,

i don't do animation, but i need to do some motion blurry looking object in a print piece.

anyone know if this is something that can be done without animation, and if so, what would be my best method?

thanks

Try using object or scene motion blur. They both work outside of animation even if you're just rendering a single frame. Scene motion blur is slower but will blur in the direction of movement (if there is any), and object blur just blurs the desired object. Just put an object motion blur tag on the object you want to blur, go to preferences (render settings), then go to 'effects' 'post effect' 'object (or scene) motion blur' then just specify by how much. 400% is very blurry, 50% not so blurry, just experiment.
Soz if i've dummed this down too much (or too little), duno how much you know about C4D, even though i wouldn't consider myself an expert either! Let me know how it goes...

I still think you need to animate what you want blurred. You just render out a single frame of it for your still.

yeah, i tried this effect with no animation and it does nothing.

i guess it's easy enough to setup a simple animation.

here we go.

As miketche said above, you have to animate the object if you want the MB effect to be rendered. Two frames should be enough, and the object that you want the MB fx applied (or camera - only if you're using Scene version of MB) should move between them.

Otherwise the program couldn't "know" which objects should be motion-blured and how much and which direction - so it will consider the scene being static and there will be no MB.

ok, so i animated something, but when rendering, it blurs the whole object. i would like it to blur the back of the object, as it it were moving really fast, and the back edge is getting blurry.

any ideas?

it sounds like what you want isn't real motion blur, but a look, simply render out in passes (the bit you want blurred and the bits you don't want blurred) blur the background in photoshop using it's motion blur, and then put them back together in photoshop.

yeah, i guess you are right. thanks

Not quite sure what you want to achieve.

If it is sharp object on a blurry background, simply make the camera follow the object (by using the Target tag) and use camera MB instead of object MB. Or even better, use the RSMB plugin for After Effects, Combustion or Shake to add much better motion blur much faster in post (compositing). Preferably in combination with the Vixol plugin in C4D (but can be done without it, almost as good).

If it is only stills that you're rendering, you can also use the good advice above, about rendering separately object and background and then bluring background layer in a raster program. Make only sure that you use a sort of directional blur instead of ordinary blur, otherwise it will not look like speed but like DOF.
Also you might not be satisfied with that solution in cases when background consists of object that are at different distances from the camera. In such a case you might want to use inverted depth channel as selection mask for blurring background.

Good luck.
