CGNetworks is proud to open CGWorkshops, a global service delivering high quality online courses for digital artists. Run by industry professionals, CGWorkshops are short courses designed by master artists for the creative computer graphics industry. Running over the web, the workshops give everyone in the world an equal opportunity to interact with and learn directly from the best artists in the world. CGWorkshops can be found at www.cgworkshops.com (http://www.cgworkshops.com).

CGWorkshops are 5-8 week courses in which students are provided with lesson material, interact with and gain feedback directly from master artists. CGWorkshops will cover all aspects of computer graphics and related areas. To ensure high quality personal mentoring each courses will be limited to 20 students. Course content has been developed by the master artists delivering the course.

“CGWorkshops affirms our core vision to enhance the digital arts industry worldwide” says Leonard Teo, Founder and Managing Director of CGNetworks. “Although there are many educational institutions servicing the industry there is still a demand for fast, relevant, quality training that is affordable and accessible. We are filling that gap by offering high quality short courses in a workshop setting to anyone with an internet connection.”

Renowned artists and CG Community leaders Philip Straub (http://www.philipstraub.com) and Robert Chang (http://www.ethereality.info) will head up the first two courses which open for registration today. Phil will share some of his years of experience in illustration, concept art and product development to tutor students on the finer points of Environmental Concept Art. Rob Chang, known throughout the world for his amazing work, will take on Narrative in Illustration teaching the fundamentals of how to effectively express moods, tell stories, and convey ideas within images. Both Philip Straub and Robert Chang were contributing authors to the widely acclaimed d’artiste: Digital Painting masterclass book available from Ballistic Publishing (www.ballisticpublishing.com (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com)).

CGWorkshops’ initial two courses are currently open for registration now at http://www.cgworkshops.com

Amazing, truly amazing!

Too bad they're waaaay to advanced for a beginner like me, but it makes me very eager to train more. Very fair prices too, even I, as a student would pay it without hesitation.

AWESOME!!!

This community is truly the best around.

I would love to take these courses, but the funds just arent there right now. Definately gonna keep my eyes open for future courses. You guys should consider having industry level classes on renderman. That would be awesome because its kinda hard to find stuff on renderman.

Leonard,

I don't think I can make the first course for environmental design, do you know if it will be repeated?

Price and class outline look real good.

Thanks,

Mike

Wow that sounds great. I would love to learn from those guys. But the classes are a bit over the head for a beginner like me.

Will more basic classes be introduced in the future?

This sounds like an excellent thing to do when I take a summer break from college.

Hi Leonard,
I consider to attend one of the online-courses. The problem is, I have no credit card. Are there other possibilities of paying the fee? I could use the credit card of a friend of mine. Would that be possible?

Best regards

Oh... in case of more information on the enrollment who do we contact ???

Please contact Andrew Plumer (andrew@ballisticmedia.net).

Do you have to send sample work before before the course begins, I didn't quite understand that part.

Before the course begins, all students are encouraged to post their existing work on the workshop forums (which will be accessible after you've enrolled). This is purely for the instructors to guage your skill level to cater to individual needs.

I consider to attend one of the online-courses. The problem is, I have no credit card. Are there other possibilities of paying the fee? I could use the credit card of a friend of mine. Would that be possible?

Sure. I'll have Paypal included and wire transfer information today.

Best,

Leonard

I don't think I can make the first course for environmental design, do you know if it will be repeated?

It will only be repeated if the Instructor (Philip) has the time after this, and if there is enough demand from the community (i.e. this course would have to sell out).

Will more basic classes be introduced in the future?

These courses are already considered 'beginner-intermediate' courses. In future, yes we may consider more basic courses, however, we do not want to go to the 'bare bones basic' where we're regurgitating what's in the user manuals. These classes are to be considered as workshops with master artists.

woah very cool cgnetworks;) great way to bring in some money and provide once in a lifetime teaching:D also the launch made our front page: http://news.animationtalk.com/newsarticle298.html

Hey everyone!

Thanks for lookin into the class!!

I think Leonard answered many of the questions about the class but, on the issue of how often I will repeat this....I doubt it will occur very often. Unfortunately my time is very limited with work and freelance, so, I can only block a certain amount of time each year for something like this. Additionally, the course content is very rich and therefore takes a ton of time to prepare..lots of reading and visuals for the students to pile through....

So...will I ever repeat this class....I'd say not for sometime....famous last words though right!! he he

Lookin forward to getting started though:) Get ready to paint and draw like crazy!

Best,

Phil

The CVC2 is a 3-digit number, it'd probably be the only 3-digit number on your card.

VISA cards should work without them anyway.

We'll add some more explanatory text about it when we add paypal, thanks! :)

Wow ... we had 5 people sign up before we even started the PR today !

It looks like the classes will fill up quickly... when the class fills up your name will go in the queue for the next repeat of the course.

It's our intention, and that of the instrctuors, that the courses will be repeated as often as possible given demand and instructors time.

Yes -- Like book sales, revenue from these courses also contribute the community -- after the instructors are paid!

Hi Leonard, Mark, and Philip Straub,

This looks like a great course and I really want to enroll, but I have a few questions first.

- first, is there a set time schedule that students have to meet up online for the lesson or can students log on and view the lessons whenever they have time? Basically, how are the classes structured?

- also, what if we miss a class? Will it still be available the week after?

- and about examples of work... I have none, that's why I want to learn!

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Leonard, Mark, and Philip Straub,

This looks like a great course and I really want to enroll, but I have a few questions first.

- first, is there a set time schedule that students have to meet up online for the lesson or can students log on and view the lessons whenever they have time? Basically, how are the classes structured?

Hi Jeff, Welcome on board

You can view tutorials and do your work at any time. The classes will be structured within a secure forum that will only be available to the students and the instructor of the particular course. Each week’s tutorial will be posted on a prescribed day in the week and will be accompanied by an assignment that will usually be due before the posting of the following week’s tutorial. Each student will have a private thread where they can post their work. Students will be able to see who is online at any one time and will be able to view each other’s work.

- also, what if we miss a class? Will it still be available the week after?

Yes, if you miss a class it will be available on the site for all the following weeks. So, for example, by the end of week 6 you will be able to see all the tutorials from week one through week six as well as all your work and the work of your classmates. However, it is not advisable to drop behind as each weekly assignment will have a due date and instructors will be scheduling their time to provide feedback every week on the assignment specific to that week.

- and about examples of work... I have none, that's why I want to learn!

We ask for examples of work so we can assess your level of experience and make sure you have the basic skills as noted in “Student Requirements” on the course page in www.cgworkshops.com (http://www.cgworkshops.com). Posting examples of work is the first thing you will be asked to do after you receive your passwords to get into the class homepage (following the closing of registration) a couple of week before the course starts. We assume that if you fulfill the course requirements you will have some examples of work. If not you have until the 6th of May to put some together.

I'm really anxious to enroll in the Philip Straub class but I do have a question about the enrollment. How can you tell if all of the slots are filled? Like I said, I really want to join this class but I'm a bit cautious about signing up and paying only to find out the entire class is booked up. Thanks!

Mibus
04-27-2005, 12:25 AM
Kapow, we won't take your money if the class is full :)

We do still capture contact details of the first few people after the 20 places, incase someone pulls out at the last minute; but not payment details!

Andrew-Plumer
04-27-2005, 12:41 AM
Hello Kapow
Just to confirm Rob's reply. www.cgworkshops.com (http://www.cgworkshops.com) enrollment page reads:

Each course will only accept the first 20 students to enroll and pay. We do, however, have a standby list of 5 students for each course to cover cancellations . If you are the twenty first – twenty fifth student to enroll we will take your contact details, place your name on a standby list and contact you should any one of the first 20 students withdraw. Should a place become available we will not bill you until you confirm you wish to fill the vacancy.

Currently, Environmental Concept Art with Philip Straub only has 4 vacancies remaining.

Heh! Oh man, I hope I didn't come off as a miser there! :D

Thanks for the quick reply, guys. I'm really hoping to enter this class, I just didn't want to be disappointed if I didn't make it.
I've relied so much on Illustration through standard tools (Pen & Ink, Paint, etc.), that I feel like I've fallen behind on the digital revolution. Seeing the amazing work on this page is what's given me the urge to try out this workshop. Especially Philip Straub's work, which is amazing. I've used Photoshop for years but some of the things accomplished with it on this board....Wow!

And thanks for the head count up to now, Andrew. If I can make it, I'll more than likely sign up tomorrow. I'm just making sure that funds are there.

Chris
