Hi there,

Iv'e got this wak problem going on with the bones in this hand i created right and it's happened heaps of times before so I thought instead of just rebuilding the rig I'd see if anyone had a solution. I have scaled the bones of this hand a bit so I'm assuming that's where the problem begins but I can't seem to reverse it.
Anyway if you have a second, check the gif i attached, the bones at the end of the chain skew way out as they rotate and mess up the skinning. Is there anyway to stop them from doing this?!?
It hurts me, shouldn't scaling things be the most natural thing in the world? Not like opening a pandora's box of doom.

Anyway reply if you know anything about it
thanks

Pete

scaling the subobject is fine; but scaling the actual objects coordinates will cause this problem if the object is part of a hierarchy. Try using the reset xform utility on all your objects to fix the problem.

I've reset X-form on all of the objects and it stills skews. It looks like I'll have to take every bone back to X100 Y100 Z100 on the scale and move the pivots back into the right place:scream: .

Or build the rig again. Just seems like a bit of a shame because I've been trying to reuse the rig on a hand that is of sklightly different proportions.

Oh, and it's pretty anoying that you can't replace bones in skin 'cause that means i also have to re skin it....

I know this may seem like graceless self promotion, but if you are using standard max bone objects you may want to try my Bone Tools. There is a Rebuild Bones tool which takes the bones in their current state and rebuilds them with fresh bones, this may help.

You can get Bone Tools on my website (see my sig.)

Thanks mate, I'll give it a try... We're always ready to try new things here at www.animatorsatlarge.com :)

I just tried out the 'Smart Gizmo' tool, it's awesome!! I saw something like that in XSI and ever since have been tring to develop something similar for max. Guess we don't have to worry anymore.

Thanks again
You ROCK!

Use Max bone tools when modifying any bones you have... :)
