The Story of Master and Servant

The Hunchback, a hideous outcast, disfigured and unwanted, a servant of the church, the only place to hide from society. A tired and weary femme fatale seeks sanctuary in the Bell Tower. With the coming of spring the wild sparrows have returned, and as warm light hits the timber rafters they feed on bread crumbs and water, in a brief moment of joy the Hunchback becomes the Master, the maiden a servant.

comments welcome,

thanks cgtalk, good luck everyone, I enjoyed this challenge,

Greetings everyone! Its an interesting challenge this one. Its taken me a while to think about an interesting subject, so I have decided on a lonely character, The hunchback. I have not made a decision about the final scene, If it will be a wide shot or massive close up. I really want to explore the character
and hope something will evolve, for the moment I like the idea of him alone in the bell tower, captured in a moment
of joy feeding the wild sparrows, one to many! So my story
will go something like this, hopefully It Will make an evocative scene.

The Hunchback, sits alone, a hideous outcast, disfigured and unwanted, a servant of the church, the last place of
sanctuary, with the coming of spring the wild sparrows have returned, as warm light hits the timber rafters, they feed on bread crumbs and water, in a brief moment of joy the Hunchback becomes the Master.

I modeled this in clay as sometimes it helps like a drawing or sketch, first I thought about having him reclining, giving food to the sparrows, but he may look more interesting in the seated position. I'm not sure if I will give him hair, we will see.

This is a watercolor of the scene, its an abstract concept, as I want to see what transpires and evolves, I'm looking forward to modeling a hideous character,

Well heres the first of my Maya models, the clothing is difficult, I'm now going to take it into ZBrush as I want to put as much detail as possible into the face and create more flow on the clothes. On this challenge I want to spend more time on my
texturing and lighting, and test rendering.

i love it. in this pose he seems begging. i thought at first he is a begger. i like the that it seems one thing and it turns out to be somthing different, although you didn't mean that.

thanks, I know what you mean, but I hope the final image is more positive, but two meanings
are good, Im hoping the idea will find its own course in at the end,

Your concept is interesting, nice modeling,

ciao Patina!

hey grea modleing and lighting...ur concept is very touchy but just to remind u the contest rules.. ur final image should contain atleast 2 characters... one being the Master and the other being the Servant. And we should never frget the meaning of servant, which is to serve.. in this case surve the master... thats all from me.. happy vertex pulling

Hi everyone, I have been busy with one thing and another basically, constructing a church tower, bell and some lighting tests, this is a simple object I want to be placed near the hunchback, its bread and water, for the sparrows to feed
on,

Here are the Swallows finally, this was quite tricky to model I had to scrap the textures I made initially as it didn't look natural, so in the end I scanned in a real feather and applied it to the wings, so I'm quite happy with the results, all that's left is to rig, not an easy task. I would like to recommend mental ray for rendering as it really brings out the true colors,

Hi patina,

Oh yes! This is a cool piece of work. The clay sketch is realy a good idea... makes the character kind of grounded in a real world.

Good luck to you for this challenge.

I have created my own textures with the use of a digital camera, sometimes its difficult to get the textures you really want so it can be faster to go out and photograph the ones you need, this old wood was perfect for the bell. I am going to leave a lot of the tweaking until the, end, Im only using textures as I feel you have more control than shaders.

This is the Church Tower, the tower of sanctuary to the hunchback, Im toying with the idea of introducing a heroine, as it might add more interest to the scene, she being master to the hunchback and he master of the creatures and servant to the church, but it will depend on final image and what kind of emotion I can introduce.See what happens, this is only early light tests
I will have a detailed breakdown at the end,

After a number of renders this is close to what I want to achieve, I want to reach a daylight tone, obviously clouds will be seen through the window, as this will be where the swallows fly and swarm, I still am un-clear about positioning my characters but this is the fun part of the project, I may even decide on a massive close up, just on the characters and very little background, but this will happen at the end I hope, any comments welcome!

Hi, its really beautifull. There is something ftom fairytales, something of children feeling. Please - do not bump map the wall so much, doesn´t look good. And stones under the window are .......look like boxes, not stones.

Wish you luck. I like it really much :)

Hi navylete, thanks for your comments I agree, theres a lot more tweaking before I
reach the final image, this is just a test on my journey to the final concept, I have a load more textures to create, and will be changing some of them, at the moment Im working on
the character textures, uv mapping, such a pain!

thanks Patina,

Hello all, I like to leave the most difficult to last, I'm refining my hunchback character in Zbrush, the process I'm using is model and UV map in Maya, import as object into Zbrush then back to Maya, The thing to remember is to make sure you merge all vertices and have clean UV models, otherwise you will run into problems in Zbrush.

My hunchback in development, its taken longer than I realised, I wanted to make a happy-sad face as in one side of his face smiles and the other is sad
the two persons in one, in terms of modeling in Zbrush make sure! that tool, geometry, ssmt is active.
in geometry, activate sdiv 1.
when in sdiv 1, morph Target.
reason is you have to make sure your uv map is correctly changed, otherwise you end up back in Maya with no uv map, all your efforts down the drain,
from there you can create a displacement map to begin the texture process, a good skin shader can be a good place to begin the skin process, then its in to photoshop, I like to use a mixture of real skin and painted, I think it can
blur the concept between real and fantasy, anyway I better get back to it, I have started modeling a female character as I think it may also convey the image of beauty and the beast.
good luck for now!

Its taken longer than I thought to make a female character, but I think it may help the scene, I wanted to make a beauty and the beast image on top of my original concept, Im going to have her resting on his shoulder, anyway Im hoping the next image will be my first complete render, Im only using textures, so the hair was shaped in Zbrush, she has the look of an Irish Collen, I thought red hair would be different,
comments always welcome!

Here are a selection of images, of my lighting, these are tests, I intend to use a standard key light, fill light and back light, a film standard in lighting, but also I will create a global illumination and then combine the results. This project, has taken a while to get the characters into the correct position that feels natural. But I have finally come up with a composition I like! results posted soon.

Here are a selection of my final renders,
I like to create a number of lighting setups on my characters and then composit them in photoshop, blending the layers, I have used a Mental ray, and Maya render I find this can give you a great variation and depth of field in your final setup, comments welcome!

Post Effects, I'm a bit of a purist so my effects were achieved in photoshop, by blending the rendered layers blurring the edges, this black and white image I think conveys what I was trying to achieve in terms of lighting and atmosphere, I would have liked to have submitted my final image as black and white, not sure if its in the rules, it would complement the genre I think, any way comments welcome, I have worked through the night to reach my final image so its time to upload, or I will miss the deadline!

Nice and classic idea. You just need to improve your modeling and lighting skills. The anatomy is not right. The most strange are the feet. Good job anyway.

Indeed limousine, I have to say I dont agree with your appraisal, but your free to comment,
Hes an abstract character, in a fairytale image, It was a conscience decision to model him in such a way as to enhance his absurd features, in comparison to the female form, perhaps you missed my black and white image , Im quite happy with the lighting, all in all
I think theres about 8 or 10% left that would have brought it to 100% completion, alas the deadline!, but of course we invite you to submit a 3d M-S design, the proof is in the making ! I hope you have a sense of humour! a-ha

Hi,
Nice idea to take the hunchback of Notre Dame for this challenge, i think you're perfectly in line with it.
Birds, Wood and walls materials are particulary good.
(The cloth of Casimodo is a bit thick, i think)

A comment from france is particularly welcome, the home of Notre Dame, you came to my defense, but I agree the cloth I did find difficult to create, I wanted it to look heavy!
but its a great story, about society, the hunchback,
