WOW... I think this is my first o second time give 5 stars... is amazing reproduction because I know more good the PIEDAD because I stay this winter in ROME and I saw long time this esculture... I have only critic, the virgin expression is more sad in the real esculpture, but IS GREAT, GREAT, GREAT JOB.
5 stars for my
enhorabuenahttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

sheeeeeiiiit - thats INSANE!
Have you got some wires to show? It looks too good!
Im not too keen on the very procedural looking marble texture, but the actual modeling is astounding, and id love to see how you made the cloth parts as i model a lot of clothes similar to those at work.

04-18-2005, 08:48 AM
Impressive work.
The two things that stand out to me though that could be improved would be his calf/knee and the texture on the side of Jesus.
Where the calf blends with the thigh/knee it looks like your version is a bit too skinny and blobby. I would really sharpen up that angle.
On Jesus the procedural texture has created somthing of a loop on his chest that is reading as lighting, incorrect lighting, on a part that you've really accurately defined. There are a couple small places here and there where I think your texture is actually hurting how your model reads. Maybe some plain texture renders?

Hi!
wow, I did not expect this response, I posted it yesterday before I went to sleep
and now I am seeing it at front page, thank you very much for your answers!
I don´t know what to say, the whole model is made with polygons, I started modelling Jesus based on a photo of the human body. Later I rigged the character and placed it in the position based on a photo of the Pietà which I used as referen, I made th necessary deformations to make it look as close as possible to the original. Then i continued with Maria, the part wich tool me the longest time was the thorax of Maria since it contains a lot of folds in her clothes. Her dress was easier.
Here is the wire:
Thanks!!:bounce: :bounce:

04-18-2005, 01:55 PM
This is absolutely brilliant Vladimir! If I could give a thread 6 stars, I would've given them.
I think that I can safely say that this is the best 3d human sculpture I've ever seen.
The only thing that caught my eye was the left arm of jesus. Compared to the original sculpture, it looks very thing and maybe even a bit squashed.
ps. I've sent you a PM.

hi
I cannot believe the amount of comments I have recieved, thank you very much!
I don´t know exactly how long time it took me to model the whole model including the
texture, I believe at least one and a half month during my spare time.
I also spent several days working with the material(texture) but it seems some of
you would have preffered some other material.:scream:
Thank you again for all your great comments!!!
Hola,

My only problem is the one that was mentionned the most: the knees. They probably got skinnier when you bent them, which could easily be fixed with an influence object.
BTW, the wire picture you posted...is that the same as the finished piece? or did you convert to SubD or do a poly smooth on it?

job-dropping master piece i say.
j!.
i am very interested in your reference material? did u have any other angles of this or did u juse use this image in the background and a camera positioned accordingly angled to fit and that's it?
some of the details are very very close, very nice indeed. i would definately texture the dirt and brown corrosion and give a much more dramatic lighting to this. that would make this piece incredible.

This has got to be one of THE best models I have ever seen here - and I've seen nearly all of the best. I saw it on the front page and instantly recognized it. In fact, from the thumbnail, it looked like a thumb to an image of the real Pietà! Very photo-realistic!
You've captured all the beautiful subtletiess and detail in the wrinkles and faces. Truly one of my favorite CG pieces I've seen. 10 stars if I could. :arteest: :applause:

Simply astounding   . The modeling is one of the greatest i've seen in replication of a statue. I really do believe you can turn this into an epic art piece of realism if you texture it like the one you referenced on and light it with Final gathering and HDRI. You can take this further and into your advantage, i don't think the texturing and lighting part will be much of a burden. And to finalize do some post works in photoshop, like adding grain and whatnot.

Thats an excellent model. You may want to watch your porportions. The original sculptures legs are a bit larger the the torso, giving it a more dynamic feel. Try making the bottom half larger than the upper torso.Micheanglo made the lower half larger on purpose because of the angle at which it was meant to be viewed.
P.S. cant spell
brilliant dude.. now im all inspired. Best model in ages...
and it really hits home how crazy it is that the great master michaelangelo made this from FRICKEN stone! with prolly only models as reference. heh no fine tuning with stone. amazing.

Like everyone else says. Very impressive stuff. Haha, just the last days I have been thinking alot that it would be cool to model some cloth to test some new modeling tools I've made. But I couldn't think of a really good model. Something along the lines of your model would be perfect. Very inspiring!
I have to look more at statues!
How did you cope with the polygon count? How many polys were there in the model, doesn't look like an enormous amount, but still quite a bit. And you used edge weights of maya to customize the smoothing, right? (haven't used maya myself).
Hope to see more from you :)

Yeah that knee fix really helped.
Hehe I hate to be picky, but things can always get tweaked.... While you're going through and tweaking stuff. On Jesus' left hip the cloth folds look a little too regular, too repetitive.
Oh yeah... wires!
stoat
04-19-2005, 09:11 AM
Astonishing  It's said that the man could find and free the figures trapped in the marble but there cannot be an analogy with maya. As for getting every fold to the millimetre, I'd say stuff that  art is always more than draughtmanship.

This really is spectacular. I have one quibble -- someone else might have mentioned this already, but there's something a bit odd about Christ's knees. The thighs taper a bit more than the original, and the knees come off looking a bit like a folded straw rather than, well, knee joints. It's extremely minor, and I probably wouldn't have noticed had I not been looking with my face two inches from the monitor.
I absolutely love this, though. When I first looked at it, I thought, hmm... CGTalk is allowing sculpture now?

Excellent modeling ability you have there! Since I'm not that familiar with the piedad...I'd rather have a sculptor/museum consultant look into this...to see whether or not they'd qualify this similar to the original .... They might say it just looks too brand new...
I know you're an expert now in the modeling...and you deserve more than 5 stars...but you said you want to improve...hmmm...I'm realizing even the pros want to improve even more...
*Probably slice one of the limbs...like the real ones who've lost their pieces...(they're old you know)
*Your modeling is superb...now try out the texturing just a little bit...I see you have some great skill in that too...
*To make it ancient and thus more realistic...give it some dirt, smudges and smears...Just a bit...and since you already give this beauty of a piece your own...that'll do....
Congrats on Front page!

First I wanted to say,
Excellent modeling for the pieta, man!
Now you are really the second Michel..
Second...I wanted to have some critques.
The only thing that seems not right is the material itself. Compare to lots of sculptures you'll find it doesn't have that clear light reflection point. And the stripes looks too big for the original size of the sculpture.
I really like the lighting you set. It gives a so real environment.
And I really admire your modeling skill. Maybe, in my opinion, you can improve on the texture part more.

i would suggest 5 stars are not enough to reward this excellecy...hats off...
for critic..i don't know i should suggest this, but anyway so far no one has pointed this out.. so i think i put my humble point of view here..
i think tht the back side of the knee (just under the knee) is too rounded & thin & its lookin slightly unnatural .

hi vladimir, your model blow me away...awesome skill.
anyway i have some question that i hope you dont mind to answer,, i really need your help ^_^. ok i'm working on models with complicated drappery with folds crease and stuff like that, you know what i mean :). what i need to know is, do you model the cloth, before or after you pose the character? so yeah it's a big dilemma for me and i hope you can help me. thanks a lot
jordibares
04-20-2005, 10:11 AM
The work seems really good at first but let me point few things IMHO you should address;
- The body anatomy is not correct, look carefully the knees and all its missing tendons and missing bone bulges. (Even the twak you did does not really stand up against the real one)
- again the feet lacks detail and feels a much rounder version of the real one.
- Again the triceps is unresolved, in this particular case i feel it was abandoned in the modeling stage as is more a "random bulge" than what you can appreciate in the real sculpture.
- Very good to show clearly the contact between Mary's hand and the cloth (left side) but details like the little folds the sculpture shows reveal the texture and thickness of the cloth that you have not put into your model.
- Another thing that strikes me is unresolved rib cage, may be part of this has to do with the glossy rendering instead of a more rough surface but seems to me is not correct.
- The throat is near to be ok but if you look carefully you will see a more relaxed version in the original showing the dead body while in yours has a pinch and a softened version of the conexion with the chin, resulting in a wrong signal of life.
- About the cloth itself i have to say you have resolved a lot but gone for another easier path than the real scupture. Look the ropes on Jesus that cover his body and how yours seem flattened (as if you used a scaling tool in 3D) while in the original the folding resolves in a multitude of conexions in a much more natural way. Think of it as a spiders network instead of rolling hills.
- Her face is more pleasant and probably has something to do with your lighting but both forefront and nose connection is not as pleasant as the original.
- And last but more important, your Mary is not touching his knee showing a completly diferent gesture of disgust and/or surprise instead of love.
Overall is an excelent job that need a few careful tweaks to be a truly superb one.
Well done.
It's so inspiring i decided to make a 3d "David" ...yes I'm gonna make one ;)
...Again what was your reference? 2d pics or some mini statue etc??

The image looks great, you have very good modeling skills, but let me say something. This image could be 3000% better if you just add Zbrush before consider it finished. Give yourself a modeling break and start zbrushing it. Oh, and even the materials can be greatly improved in Zbrush!
