Allabulle 04-27-2005, 01:58 AM Thank you for sharing your model skills and render. I've already learnt a lot just paying attention to the wireframe image, the render image and to the references that you kindly share with us. McClure was indeed right about the knee zone and Jordi Bares (wich many people here in Barcelona admire and hate at the same time;) was also very inspiring and helpful. Thank you all.
Besides the "wow" and "cool" stuff, this thread it's really worth the time it takes to read, I'm learning and amusing a lot.
Could you please spend a little more of your time to share with us something about your techniques? What have you learned through the modelling process? Could you explain to us something about your experience during your modelling, you know: about that kind of stuff like "I'd like to do that rather than that" or "I've learned to NOT do that any more and instead do THAT". Well... er... and... and can you write please your credit card nuber... and... well, that's enough for today. :-)
Thank you again. :-)

Let me say first that you are very good and continue to build your skills. This is definitely Dope! You are better than me because I never have time to get started, so don't stop. I am an artist in many areas and I worked and studied stone.
I agree that you still need to improve your modeling. Always remember never to take too many short cuts if it will not benifit your finished work. In this case, I think that you either became tired in working in one area or didn't understand how to model the very fine details. I imagine your computer wasn't in the Vatican either. I am not sure, but This is a very challenging piece and you did very well. But you need to continue to do everything that is going to perfect the work.
I can't upload an image to show some of the differences what I saw, so just compare for yourself (you already know about some of them). The material is nice and would fit an original piece of work, but it is not very fitting for this pieta. Look at the photo in this thread of the original to compare and see just some of the differences.
Great Job and push harder and further. Stay Dope!
Maya is not good for modeling. :) This doesn't deserve 5 stars, but the whole galaxies.

Hi Vladimir. Your model is larger than life man, congratulations for completing this. You are a great modeler and artist of course, because only an artist could reproduce something like this.
My only crits, in my hamble opinion, are these:
1. You seem to have missed the tendons under the knees of Jesus, that makes your leg deformations kind of strange. If you take a look at the original you will understand what I mean.
2. Virgin Mary's forehead shows more in the orginal, giving a sadder overall feeling when you are looking at her. You got her expression right though :)
3. Lastly, I believe that in the original sculpture, Michaelangelo made Virgin Mary "pulling" Jesus towards her chest more. In your model Jesus just seems to be lying on her knees, which is ok, but fixing this will actually show what Michaelangelo wanted to show..... the feelings that Virgin Mary had, when she lost Jesus, her love and her affection. These little things add so much more weight to the original and bring it to life.
Other than that, trully inspiring work, keep it up. ;)

Excellent, excellent job. I can't even begin to imagine how you went about modeling this complex piece of art. You must truly be an artist with a really good eye for subtleties and must have had great reference images! Overall, rediculously well-done. Please share with us your modeling process!

Marvelous effort, congatulations. I imagine you are rather exhausted with this project. But I hope you will over time enhance it further as you tally suggestions on a continueous basis. Posting the version date and time next to each posting of new renders of your work would lead to less confusion about what is the lastest model version, as these images will likely be posted on many, many sites over time as well as be e-mailed. Forum systems often rename images, so your posting date and time along with images would be very helpful.
I hope at some point in the near future you will do a SLOW fly around animation of your model so we can see this masterpiece from many angles. As this will be our only avenue to see this masterpiece from many angles as most of us will not get the chance to see the original in person.
If you write on the sash, perhaps you should change it to say "Michelangelo did the original masterpiece." Something should be written there, but tact will be neccasary.
Again this is done with great craftsmanship. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all.

you already have an idea, but the work is rather impressive. Great job by far.
My only crit if you're interested.... is the heel. The master work has the weight and softness of flesh, as it presses against the tree stump. A subtle detail that may be shallow in comparison to the detail you put into the rest of this work.
Great job.
(Sorry I'm lazy, but here's the pic used earlier for the knee...look to the heel, my friend.)

amazing! Creating folds in fabric is one of the biggest challenges and you've handled it perfectly and believably
you should sell the model to a museum or something. I dunno

Very beautiful. Can you please post close-ups of things like the faces, hands, and the folds in the fabrics? Maybe a view from one side and/or from the top, if that's no trouble. Would love to see them! :)

After reading through this entire thread, I would not presume to critique your work.
As a long-time sculptor, and more recently a CG artist, I'm very impressed, and I am happy to see the response you have gotten from the CG community.
It is well deserved.
Have you considered sending your file to a rapid prototyper, and executing an actual sculpture from your model? It's such an impressive, detailed work, it would look fantastic as a bronze reproduction... provided you have detailed the entire piece.
Best of luck in your future endeavors :)

Well, at first, when i want to say something that could interest to somebody maybe i will write in english. But sometimes i just want to say something to the artist, that can uderstand my idiom. I dont want to read sentences like "Oh my gos is awesome" because im not the artist so i will write in my idiom if he can understand.
The translation of my text is that if he have try to practice sculpture.
So please, dont hate.

Great job indeed but I think there is little bit problem with the legs of the male figure. I think there is a little bit problem in anatomy at the knee area of the right leg and secondly it seems that the left leg is floating on the air.

It is simply stupendous!
The animated giff shows the differences, The knee still isn't quite right and Mary looks to me like she has a very faint smile that's absent in the original. There is more detail in the original cloth folds than in your model. Also, Jesus' left heel presses into, rests upon, the tree stump and his head is thrown back farther.
You don't need to improve your modeling skills, what you *do* need to do is let your imagination and your feelings flow through you into the work. *Feel* the heel as it presses into the tree. Note the stiffness in the cloth as it resists gravity, cloth is not quite so relaxed as you have portrayed it, sections will stiffen in columns that only reluctantly give way. Imagine how the Christs head would lol about, he's not sleeping.
And, of course, many kudos for having the chutzpah to even attempt it in the first place! Great work!

its amazing... you dont need me to say any mroe about that.
but i DO think that there needs to be more feeling. like some have said before... i think you just modeled.... which i believe was the original intent lol... so kudos to you. i wanna see you redo this image... with as much feeling as you can and your own composition as to how our dear mary should be showing her anguish.
cheers!

Probablente el modelo más meritorio que vi en mi vida. Increíble. Coincido en que con otro material podría quedar mejor, pero aunque ni siquiera le hubieras puesto un material, seguiría siendo algo de otro mundo.
(Probably the best model I have ever seen. Incredible. I agree with what others said about the material, but even if it didn't have a material at all, I would still be a piece of work out of this world.)

Vladimir, even though your original post for Piedad was in April, I'm sure you will continue to get comments on it.
What a way to try to improve your skills! The way it looks to me, it couldn't have been done better. Stunning job!
There aren't enough stars available for what it's really worth.

something that makes me chuckle is thinking about how many times you used "undo" during this model, then thinking of how accurate angelo had to be when he made the original... he had no undos! lol
I was thinking the same thing. If you could impress the cgtalk community this much with a cg model, imagine what an accomplishment Michael had when doing this thing out of rock...I wonder if he was working from a reference?
Keep up the awesome work.

Wow...(read the post above).......
I mean wow.....
Guys...that is no cloth plugin or wuteva...thats poly-pulling wonder for you. And the shaders....can be better in terms of dirt and all...but this is how it looks like when Michealangelo first finished doing it i guess!
Mental Ray perhaps?

Hey Vladimir, just taking a break from the 3D Challenge to cruse through the galleries here -- saw your work and thoguht I'd say once again, this is one of my top five favorite CG works. Really cool, theme and rendering. Cheers!

Photorealism is amazing.
That renderer rocks (not to mention the modeling and the texture).
I wouldn't use influence objects for the knees though. Too slow. But might not matter given the 1 pose. Maybe a blendshape or 2.
Rock on.

WOW!
This is a real artistic masterpiece. Congratulations Vladimir!
Recibe saludos de otro peruano, espero que continues persiguiendo tu pasion por el arte 3D. Tu nivel esta buenisimo!
I just found this thread by doing a search with the keyword Peru, man I did not see this coming. It's really encouraging to see other peruvians doing things like this, very inspiring.
I hope every aspiring 3D artist in Peru has had the chance to check this out, this guy has single-handedly raised the bar of 3D modeling in an entire nation.

This is amazing, not to mention the fact that this is one of my fav sculptures. You even added more detail than the original artist. The veins in the hand are not even in the sculpture. Job well done. Details, lighting...just amazing.
Wonderful, wonderful, fantastic, amazing job.
I saw this in the d'artiste Character Modeling book, and now I was pleasantly surprised to see it. Excellent!

I´ve seen a lot of pictures of the original one cause I've done a tesis about it 20 years ago. What could I say? You are a master.
Only one thing: I'd like to see a model of your own imaginary world...

I am very impressed. How long did it take to put this together? If you are like me, you probably are not only seeking a thousand pats on the back but direction to improve your work.
Two details stood out that you want to analyze: the rib-cage of Christ and the distance between the back of the thigh and the front of the thigh at the knee. Take a caliper or a ruler and measure these in your own body and compare this measurement to the measurement of your lower leg, hand, and foot. You can also go to morphmet and get a biological anthropologist to analyze the biometrics. You will find that these two details have room for improvement.
I want to make sure you know that I still think your work is impressive!
====================================================================
Estoy bastante impresionado.

Materials and rendering are also great but this work doesn't give too much space for splendor as it shows that Vladimir is above everything else, the master 3D modeler!

As I said before, this is the work I like most among all others. :buttrock:
However, I just wonder and ask Vladimir would it not have been a better work if he had add a background like on this photo?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1f/Michelangelo's_Pieta_5450_cropncleaned_edit.jpg
This is not a criticism, just an idea which may be useful.
It could bring new life to this masterpiece, some fresh air and don't need much effort to achieve it.
