A thread in the Maya forum titled “How to use ObjectID and MaterialID in maya??”:
1: is it like 3dmax?
2: not available in maya.. you will have to render seperate mask layers for your needs by hand.. that means you have to think before rendering and not afterwards
cheers

However in (version 5.0 docs) Appendix C: Rendering attributes, under “Rendering Attributes per sample” we find:
objectID (oi) int unique ID for the object being shaded, may not be the same ID across frames
I’m guessing that the answer is still the one given by alexx. I.e. there is no way to map from objectID to object names or other identifiers that would map to the object in such a way as to allow one to access its “Extra Attributes,” or am I missing something… another approach etc.?
The solution in the thread “Material Expressions” is not good for me because the first step is: “Assign one material to all your objects” which defeats my intended use.
Thanks, (from an API novice)
