well,
what can i say man...
I have been sitting beside you the whole year and have learned alot from watching you work, your sculptures, drawings, 3d models are an inspiration to me. You are a very talented person and you've had a big effect on my education and my reel and have gotten me excited about sculpting.
It was a good year, lots of hard work and lots of all nighters have paid off it seems. My fav. Character is still garkhar but thats not to say the rest isnt amazing, Youve shown alot of work in this reel and most people wonder how you pulled it off in the time we were given.
Best of luck in your future and hopefully we can work together.

Well well finally all done. It was a great experience working beside you while working on my own demo reel. I really appreciate all the critiques and help you gave me. Your one of the hardest working people I've ever seen.
Your demo reel is awesome I'm sure people will see that. Can't wait to see what kinda jobs your gonna land with this thing. Good luck in the future.

Hey Herbert!!
Great work man! I'll send you extra special reference.
Hey I have a suggestion for your quicktime compression (cuz I have no criticism of your modeling), use Quicktime 6 at school and compress the audio with Mpeg-4 Audio, that should take of 10 megs or so, AND you can use that space to get better video quality (I use key frame every 15 frame and 60-65% quality usually, don't limit the data rate though that can make the file bigger)
Give me the low down on Blur, man!
thanks the the replies guys! :)
r1d3r:Thanks dude! Im finally done, now the waiting part.
Heber: Thanks dude, same thing here. You have helped me a lot for the last year. I dont think I can make it this far without your help! I hope we can work together again in the future.
Chazzi:Thanks man, you have helped me a lot too in designing my character for my demo! Good luck for your job hunt too!
Fabianloing: hey hamster man, first answer: feels so relieved yet so stressed wondering about the job hunt.
Good luck on ur own reel! you have helped me too in many ways!
stung:thanks a lot man, your VFX reel kick some serious ass too!
tURQOISE:thanks a lot for the nice comment :)
alexfalchi:thanks so much mate!
Tom W: yeah man!always balls deep!finally Im done!!good luck on ur job hunt too!(or you got a job already?)
AZTGlory:Thanks so much man!
leejusuk:thanks man, yeah, whenever u want it man, im ready with my camera and psp
Bartek|3D:thanks man, it would be awesome to work with you !
holbroal:thanks Allen, actually, I did use quicktime to compress it, I use 70% quality and key every 15 frame. And music, i also use mpeg 4. I dunno why its still 55 megs
cheers guys!

wow that's some great stuff. I got some questions about the Vancouver Film School...I keep on seeing some great stuff from people there. How good is this school? Are the students like the "average" age and come out straight from high school? Is it tough to get in?

It depends I guess, the students age are vary. I got classmates that are 30ish, and the youngest around 19ish.
about getting in, they need to see some of ur portfolio. but not always has to be 3D. I didnt have any 3d portfolio. But I had fine art background.
but overall, the school is nice, but, since now they raise the tuition fee, its a bit expensive to get in

oh yea, I read the file info wrong, it is mpeg4. It's strange that 70% quality looks kind of low, like keyframes are every 30 frames or something, but you say it is 15, so there goes that theory.
Anyway I think the file size is fine for a 4:30 minute reel. If I have any suggestions it would to be to try to make the reel 2:30 instead, you could probably show the same amount of art, just more quickly.
Just trying to get your stuff to be the best it can be man! You're gonna have a great time finding a job!

Great work Herbert! You sure have a nice range of skills, I really like your sculptures. I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a job. To be really picky, I think garkhar's skin shader needs more work, the version in your matte painting looks great, however the turntable one, it looks really green, a bit too satuarated. It'll be nice to see more blue and purple on the skin.
Best of luck on the job hunt :)

04-18-2005, 11:10 PM
That was creepy... I was listening to my mp3 of King Arthur (that overture), and then I shut it off when your reel finished downloading, and then that was the music for your reel! I thought I left the mp3 running... but I guess it was one huge coincidence.
I think the reel is absolutely amazing! Really impressive work.
Was that done in Maya? Is that what the school teaches? Really awesome...
Hi guys, thanks a lot for the replies!!
holbroal:I hope I can find a job soon. I tried to cut my demo to be shorter, but I cant find any spot I can cut without cutting any major stuff. Thanks for the advice though!! :)
dom:Thanks for the feedback dom. I agree, the skin shader needs a lot more work. But I have been rerendering him uncountable times, with lighting changes and everything. I hope I can find a job soon. How are you doing with ur job hunt?
Marsinfur:Haha, thanks man, dont forget about me when ur company wants to hire a modeler ;)
Howiejai:Thanks Howie, I hope so too man, I need job!! :D
Breoniks:Thanks man! You yourself have helped me in many ways!especially when I am stuck with my design!thanks one more time( I might keep haunting VFS' Ant Farm for the next month possibly, BEWARE!)
dvd_master:Nice coincidence. Thanks a lot for the kind word. It was all done in XSI. The school teaches both XSI and Maya, but for modeling stream, we mainly use XSI :)
cheers guys,

Awsome Herbert! What else is there to say? Good choice in sound track ... very epic ... definitly fiting for the evolution you went through from your first model to where you are now and the amount of work you did in such a short period of time. Your growth process is fenomenal. All I have is praise for you man! You are one of the best examples I know of a hard worker. I'm not even going to wish you good luck ... your talent is suficient to bring you through and get you a job. Hopefully we'll meet as hired professionals very soon! Anyways ... Good Luck (this is for choosing. hehe)! :bounce:
Wow..
From someone who is in the process of planning out my demo reel, i can tell you that I love how your's flows. How the different 'aspects' of the models move into one another....hard to explain what I mean, so i'm just going to leave it at sounding like a jabbering idiot. ;)
Crit time! Please bear in mind that these are only minor things, and just personal opinions-I think that your reel is fantastic, probably one of the best modeling reels i've come across.
That said, I must say that I think that while your orc is amazing, I wish that the beast was given more screen time, as I think it is the stronger of the two pieces. Maybe thats just cos its more 'unusual' than the orc, and more detailed.
The part where the camera moves around the details of the beast is 'obviously' a very hi res render of the model, with the camera being moves over it (or it being movied infront of the camera', and i think that that breaks up the flow of everything, cos it feels flat. I understand why you must have done this (rendering time!), but I would suggest that you actually render those camera movements over the beast, to keep that fantastic flow that you have.
Thats about it really! As I said-amazing reel, and excellent job!

hi guys,
first of thanks to lildragon for plugging me! :)
flyod:thanks a lot dude, yeah, it ahs been a good year. not sleeping well, stay overnight at school , etc, but its finally done!hehe, good luck on ur reel too man!
Pyke:thanks for the reply, actually, I was going to put the beast first, but in the end, I chose the orc because I have more animation on him :)
and the pan in of the detail, I had a zoom in rotation at first, but I notice I have way too many rotation, so I took it out.thanks once again for the good words :)
Heebs:thanks for believing in my work, your work has been inpiration to mee too since I got into vfs!And I cant even imagine where I will be right now without your help! thanks for the help for the last year dude!
Boogieman:thanks a lot man, I hope we can work together! :) and the new policy about working visa stuff is sweet!

pretty nice dude, your good at modeling detail, but I would recomend spending more time working on your muscle and bone structure. I was just wondering if that is what the standard demo reel looks like from VFS. Ive seen some others and the models are different but the layout and the way you zoom in on textures and show your uv's, they are almost the same. Is this some sort of standard at the school? I would also like to know why you have like two unfinished models on your reel?
anyways, best of luck to you.
cheers

I can remember back in the day when those were all WIPs. It's awesome seeing them completed and all together as a big happy and disturbed family.
Just one comment about the reel. Aside from it being as good as it is, the credits seemed to role by abit fast, I had to pause it to read everything.
But again, great job!
thanks for the replies, guys :)
LeeSalo:Yeah, that is my next goal, Im going to practice modeling more human anatomy for my next project. Ant VFS doesnt have any standard in showing ur model. But by looking at our previous grads' reels, I find that that is probably the best way to show the texture and the UV layout. It saves time and pretty effective IMO. And The last 2 unfinished model. I didnt do it for the finished product.they were made for my zbrush practicing purpose. The marine is my very first attempt to detail something with zbrush. And the berserker, I wanted to model something in low poly then normal map it just to show that the chracter can be used in game.
Lastly, I had to do those 2 , the matt painting, putting everything together as a finished product in 7 weeks, So basically, it was a short period of time to work on my reel :). Thanks once again for the reply ;)
alex.h:thanks mate! :D your replies had been very encouraging for my reel since it was on WIP!
Flyod:thanks dude
Pixelcritter:thanks for the reply :). yeah, I think it was only last for like 2 second each page. But I had to cut it short because my whole reel is like 3:50 already, its pretty long and Im afraid it might bored people out if its stretching way too long
cheers,
HB

Just saw your reel. Congrats on the frontpage by the way.
Nice to see you have updated your website, i can see you are a very broad and talented artist.
As for the reel, like what has been said, the musculature and anatomy could've been more represented by the structure of the human form. The textures and shader work could've been better, more complex and realistic here and there, but overall, you certainly packed it all off in the end with the quantity/quality of your work.
I hope it goes well for you in your job hunt and good luck to your future endeavors.

Great reel, I really enjoyed it.
One thing tho, i'm not sure if it was the camera angle or something else but when your doing the the textured turn-around of Garkhar head I could see inside of his skull through his ear.
You might want to add some hair in there or something to block it off, just a idea ^^

If you dont mind me asking just a few questions:

I am 52 years old and just now starting to look into cg. Have just got zbrush and am amazed. i been looking at these sites for some time now. I absolutely love the fantastic work being done in this field. i wish i was 18 again. I never heard of a Demo reel But after watching yours just now , i am in a state of shock. That was a mindblower. Instead of speeding it up, i wished it wasn't moving so fast. i was trying to catch all the detail and couldn't. I am extremely impressed.I hope to keep track of your work in the future. Your talent, ability and creativity is SMOKING hot. I hope you get a website up soon. i cannot see enough of your work. I also hope the job search catches the eye of top companies. I believe you will be blazing trails. I also would like to see more demo reels of your fellow students and others. For now, i guess i will have to check cgtalk everyday til i see more of your art. Thank you for posting your reel. By the way, the music was perfect for it. You have it all together..... Reach for the stars , man. There in your reach. Sincerely, rick woodward

overall your reel is incredible but it seems like you rushed it at the end.
from 00:03:35 and on.
especially the part from 00:03:43 - 00:03:46 is where it zips right by the credits and dedications.
other than that it's great!

excellent stuff....you shouldnt have much of a problem finding work i think.
Texturing and modelling are good....
But u need to take out the animations of orc arm and face.....they only hurt the reel because its not enough to show that you can rig or animate. Also....with all of the polish on 2 models....you might want to take out the beserker with the sword because its not textured or up to quality with the first to pieces wich are excellent.
U could replace what you take out with some better closeups of your 2d sketches which is still a respected skill to have in this business(so many 3d artists out there that cannot draw worth shite!)
nubian: True man, I rushed it so badly, because I thought my reel was too long and boring, so I decided to cut it short. And now the people I give credit for have to pause to see their name :D
Garduna_knight:Thanks man, right now I am still waiting for a solid job offer . I will let you guys know when I got a job :)
2byts:Thanks a lot for the tip!I agree with you, I think my low poly character is the weakest one in my reel. Man, I should've put more of my drawings from my sketchbook/ life drawing book. I didnt put them in because I was running out of time. thanks a lot for the tip, I really do appreciate it! :D

if you want to show off some lowPoly stuff.....take your first 2 pieces....and do a loRez version of them that would fit in a game. Game Companies would like to see how you can convert a hires model into something that could be used for realtime.
You would not have to re-texture anything if you are clever enough with baking your textures into a single map -normal maps may be useful in this case.

shawk:hi there, thanks for the reply! :)
Thanks for the link btw!
I studied fine art at Kwantlen University college in Surrey ( lower mainland vancouver)
I took all drawing courses, all paintings, sculpture 1, all photography, printmaking, art history,
visual language and composition, new media. and some stupid ass advance english course which I failed in, hehe.
then I took 3d animation and visual effect in VFS.
oh, the price in Kwantlen is different for you because I was international student so I had to pay a lot more.
cheers,
