what is the amount of time it takes to become proficient in Maya. Let's say to learn to model and render a character plus learn the tools to do this.

2 hours, 16 minutes, 41 seconds.

GO!

EDIT: Admittedly, that was pretty harsh.

I would recommend going through the tutes in the manual, plus online tutorial sites like www.learning-maya.com (http://www.learning-maya.com).

You should be able to achieve what you want in less than a year, but you'll really get into it and start making killer stuff after another year. So probably two years to start making stuff that's truly competitive.

Of course, it varies greatly from person to person.

Depends if you have any previous experience in 3d/computers I suppose. I'd select an area to get good at ie: modelling, animation, rendering etc and work at that, you will pick up parts from the other disciplines as you learn it - but its very hard to be good at all..theres just so much there. Good luck anyway.

Above all....if you enjoy what you doing......it is SO much easier.....

well for me modelling, took about a month and a half due to my op on my foot, i was stuck sitting around so i was modelling on maya, this was last summer, and i still havent come around to rendering, probably because i haven't tried and keep forgetting how to map my textures :#.

I'm fairly new and wow, I"ve picked up on nurbs and polygons really quickly, now in texturing and as you go along you will go through alot of headache and issues trying to fix things (maybe software bugs) but when you learn the workarounds, then next time you have those issues, no biggie!

I'm done a few models now (3 months of Maya experience)...
