Latest Update: Final Image: Rescuing Princess Yanna

The rescue of Princess Yanna

For those of you who have some spare time, here is the story behind the picture.

This illustration shows one of the key moments in the history of the world of Trez: the rescuing of young princess Yanna from certain and dramatic size reduction. The backstory is important to understand the full scope of what is at stake in this representation.
The alliance of the sacred centaur-warriors, the human-frogs and the humans has lasted now for more than two centuries. But to perpetuate an expansion tradition, necessary for the comfort of a growing population, new venues of trade had to be seeked.
On their way to the far east of this world for a delicate diplomatic mission, a small group of representatives of these different species (Mister Todd, a captain of the Human-frogs race and Sheerazertiki, a mighty warrior/centaur, are part of it) was attacked by the pirates of the dark forest. The scareless Princess Yanna was among this front group and after a fierce fight during which all were killed she managed to survive but had to flee in the forest. Exhausted by hours of walk she was then captured by the head shrinkers also called the Bleeders. They generally don't attack group of humans but found in Yanna an idealy isolated and tired prey. Alerted by the rumors of the fight the rest of the group, (belated by some urgent personal business of Mister Todd...) arrived too late on the spot of the attack but succeeded in scaring the pirates away. They followed the tracks of the princess through the forest until they arrived on the edge of the Blue corridor, an old desolated ruin, built by some long forgotten natives. This magical place is known for its eternal blue light, coming from the stones themselves and is now exclusively inhabited by the dreadful Bleeders. Anyone attempting to cross that corridor, which is a shortcut through the eastern mountains, is sure to be killed and have his/her head reduced to the size of a Borgond egg. The danger of rescuing the princess is very high for the small group, but this duty is more important than their own lives. The future alliances are depending on her.
Mister Todd, despite his natural cold blood, is gradually getting worried by the situation. The fight that followed was short and terrible at the same time. The advantage was given by the new weapons developed by the alliance, the powder guns. The number of Bleeders almost overwhelmed them but they managed to rescue the princess and were able to continue their road to the east. The diplomatic mission was a success and a new alliance was established between the two regions, thanks to the princess's diplomatic qualities and the courage of her servants that saved her life. The world of Trez has since then lived a golden age of prosperity from the opening of new roads of commerce and trade.

I hope this story helped you understand my vision of a Master/servant relationship. A strong story always helps to bring out more emotion, but I do hope the picture is showing this on its own. I also tried to bring originality in the design of the characters, in the use of colors and in the composition.

I was delighted to take part to this challenge. Many thanks for those of you who commented all along and my best of luck for your entries.
Thierry:)

Placing elements in front of characters might interfere too much with the composition.

That's really neat. I hadn't seen it before. There are some really nice expressions in there: It's not front-'n'-center, but the face on the guy in the back is wonderful. I'm not quite getting why the main cantaur creature is so alarmed: Is there something in front of him? (If so, why doesn't the Master react?) Is it just the general spookiness of the place? (Why does he look so focused?) Or is it some reaction to the master on his back?
Anyhow, good luck with the refinements on this one! It'll be nice to see 'em!

Cheers Arc80, spacesnail, calisto, walrus:bounce: , this warms my heart and tells me I'm sofar in a good direction.Wallrus, you'r right about that expression, I was asking myself if it was not too much. I might change a bit the expression of the human-frog master on it's back to accomodate it to the scenery. What I wanted as a backstory was that the Master is used to crossing that place but the servant not, thus explaining the rather angry attitude the master has towards the cowardness of the centaur. But I suppose it's to much to guess from the illustration.
The mystery of what lies ahead is important though and should justifiy the face of the centaur.

Thanks for commenting:)

If the whole picture is saturated it's going to throw off the realism of your scene. The entire composition needs only 1 or 2 saturated colors at most, and only in certain parts. This is where you'd focus the viewer's eyes (unless you're going for that whole negative-space thing). I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong because you may want to end up with a soft glow over the whole scene. Who knows? But in my opinion you don't need to saturate every color in the scene.

Great stuff man! some suggestions about you'r "framing head" though..
You'r left head pinned on a stake seems to small. I would try increase it and perhaps but some skulls aswell down in the left corner to frame the focal point better. As it is now, it doesn't really help to frame the picture that much I think, make it a really dark silhouette with the blue light coming from the right, reflecting on it - shaping the forms of it.

Keep it up!

At last, I think I got it right this time.
Two fundamental elements where missing in my picture: emotion from master to servant and humanity of one of the main characters.
The master has now changed. The girl at the center is now the master and the two other characters are part of a rescue operation to save the young princess from the hands of head shrinkers.
It's making a lot more sense now. Thanks to let me know if you feel the same.

This is coming along great! Best thing you ever did was to expand the canvas on this one! :) I still feel like the "horsewoman" looks abit to relaxed in her body even though her facial expression shows that she's walked in on something unexpected.

I think you should try to draw her like she's just ready to shoot her arrow, and on a more unbalanced and dynamic pose. Perhaps it would work to have her raise her two front feets as she makes ready to take whatever measurements she's got for meeting theese evil creatures. You would actually just have to change the front of her then, since the frog sitting on her back is already slightly slanting.

This is just my thoughts about it! You'r piece is already excellent, so keep it up! :)

Hi Thierry,
Nice comp, very story telling. I also like the sweet harmony in blue of the centaur, and the dynamism of your characters.
However the scene need more contrast, I think, just to add more drama and a good depth. But I guess it's a bit early to talk about it, because it's still in progress...

PS : Renart the fox s'est-il bien terminé, depuis le temps où j'ai bossé dessus (Fin 2002) ? Je croyais pas qu'il sortirait aussi tard...

Good luck!

Everything is getting more and more interesting in your piece. But be careful because its also getting less and less apparent about the Master and Servant theme. at first, I thought the Master is the creature sitting on the 'centaur', and then I thought maybe the human behind it is the master of both of the creature. There are too many possibilities here so the relationship of any master and servant isn't very strong here, what with the new addition of the other scene.

Your painting skill is excellent, though!

MDN67, right, it's a bit flooded now, will continue working on the bg to add subtle hue differences. On the girl too...

Calisto, my thanks to you for your continuous support.:)

Hi, jeromoo, man I understand what you mean. 'Been thinking about these issues for a while and I think now the fact the girl is much more indentified as the human it's clearer than it used to be. The frog character is too far away from a human model to respect the conditions of the contest. At first I thought it could be understood as a kind of style or caricature, but realised it was too far off. I will probably change the human behind carrying a gun and a riffle to some kind of other creature, just to avoid any doubt on who is who even further. I intended to rework the girl, to have her more present as she's a bit swallowed by the blue of the BG at the moment. Things will still improve hopefully in the right direction. Many thanks for critisizing and for your insights. Cheers:)

Here's a rough version of the next update to come. The front legs of the centaur are now posed in amore dynamic stand. A lit torch is now on the ground to illuminate the face of the princess. The gun man behind will be changed into another mythical creature.

Hi! I really admire your solid drawing skills :) You've also nailed good colors in your picture.
I think you could do something to your composition. At the moment everything seems to be scaled quite similiar. I mean there could be more differences on the scales. for example you could try to make the foregound characters bigger (esp. left and right most) Or you could try to do some framing objects like lians hanging very near to camera. Well, those are just my opinions. Wish you the best!

Nice, very nice. I dig the expressions of those gremlin creatures. I do agree with TEEMUR, maybe increase the size of the main gremlin creature holding the rope and increase the size of the girl. Other than that, great colours, love the lighting, and really can't wait for more.

This such a great scene! Lovely character designs, and nicely set in the environment. I LOVE the gremlin in the bottom right hand corner, his facial expression is just to die for! Your lighting and use of tones and hues is great too, even at this stage of colouring.

I think what I love about this most is the stories that could be told from it, there is so much going on, you could lose yourself for ages just imagining the background for the characters. The frog intrigues me, he look incongruous to the rest, but that makes his character all the stronger. Fantastic work, can't wait to see the detail!

Hi Arc80, yes good suggestion, will be done in the near future. I've got so much to do today. Stay tuned.:)

Zepyhri thank you for you post, nice comments and for liking this universe. I wanted to create different kind of characters to avoid lot of the clichés of the genre. Comming from the animation world, I tend to always tell a stories in the drawings I do. I'll take the time soon to tell in a couple of paragraphs the back story of this pic. Cheers! :)

fia, thanks for the suggestion, I see what you mean and will try to do something like this. I might do a different and stronger pose for the girl.

i like these guys, and the rendering and lighting are great (that white light on them is really well done!) Once you point out that they are mimicking the centaur and his rider it makes sense, but it's a little hard to read at first. Partly because their skin tones are all the same, the jumble of limbs gets hard to read, and the silhouette isn't all that clear. Not that I think 3 guys mounted like that could ever have that clear a silhouette! :-) But do all of them have to have the same skin hue? What is some were more puple (or green or pink or whatever?) so that the limbs read a bit more clearly?

But there's actually something else bugging me about it, too: These guys have sharp teeth. They have sharp spears. They for the most part look pretty evil and mean. And the centaur sure looks frightened. So it seems to me like they should be attacking the intruders with their sharp spears and teeth, or something to cause such fear, not merely mocking them. Making fun of the centaul and frog the way they are seems like something 7-year-olds would do, not vicious guys with spears. So for me it sets up this weird disjoint: Do they have the mentality of teasing, bully youngsters (in which case, why the spears and the fearful expression on the centaur's face?) or are they evil goblins to be feared (in which case, isn't posing like their victims a little understated and ... goofy?)

Anyhow, just my thoughts on it. It's still all looking quite nice and there ar a lot of great expressions and poses all around. Best of luck to you!

Walrus, yes I guess the colours on these guys could be improved to read their pose slightly better. Will work on this. The idea behind this situation is that the fight hasn't started yet, the centaur and the other fellas would be arriving just to catch the princess before the sacrifice starts. These gobelins are meant to be stupid and why not even childish as they are pretty confident because of their superiority in numbers. Well that's at least the way I imagined them when I drew the situationo. Will keep on thinking about it though. Thanks for your comments and thoughts on this, I appreciate. :)

More then magical I would add.

The little demon are hilarious, you would always have sapce to put one behind the one that is behind the princess, cause I really like the idea of a group one looking over the shoulder of the other, I just like them so much.

I think you should grow up (more) the gremlin in the 1st plan to give more depth, I prefered the last one with the girl on the ground, this one is more planar (centaur to the left, girl to the right and the both with quite the same height), but that's always my favorite picture of the challenge ! :applause:

Keep it up ! (excuse my bad english..)

Hi Thierry! This is looking really wonderful. The lighting and shading are coming along tremendously, its a shame you had to get rid of the three little guys mimicking the frog and his steed, but I think you see the princess much more now, and her pose and positioning are much stronger, you know instantly what's going on.

Only thing that strikes me straight away is the large dark shadow under the princess... I'm not quite sure where it's coming from and it draws my eye down there if I look at the piece for too long. Could just be you haven't finished that bit yetm so ignore me if that's the case. I still love every inch of this though... like Arc says, 2D animation needs a big revival, 3D can't hold a candle to this kind of stuff. Do you have any other pieces of work posted anywhere else?

ThierryS
04-29-2005, 12:29 PM
Hi Sam, many thanks for liking this new version and sharing your thoughts. The dark shadow under the girl is a pit with some awfull pikes lying at the bottom. It's not very well done at the moment, it will need some more work. I might put something luminous to increase the dramatic light coming under her. Will have a new version on Monday!

Hey thierry2005, I like the changes you have made. The spiked floor trap creates more tension for the good guys thus enhancing the danger that they are in. :) I think the little demon behind the princess pops out too much from the picture, but that's because you aren't finished with it yet. Also the clothing on the humans looked a bit too modern with a few assortment of fantasy equipments. Like present day travellers who got transported to a magical place and teamed up with the centaur and picked up a few things to protect themselves along the way.

I agree, it really adds to the sense of peril having her hanging over the open pit like that and really makes the expression of the centaur character read well. Which, by the way, is the coolest looking design for a centaur-type character I've seen in a long long time.

Hi arkinet, thanks for your coments man, the idea behind this picture is that the team made by alliance of the centaure, the frog and the other soldier-elf behind them is arriving in this creepy place to rescue the princess before her head is reduced to the size of a tennis ball. The frog is not that emotive about it because he's... well a frog, and frogs have cold blood. :)
Anyway what I wanted to do is something not too caricatural on all the characters, I think the relation between the centaur and the girl is strong, because he's the one more showing a shock at the sight. I think the terms of the contest are respected because of this relationship between those two characters. They are the servants coming to rescue their princess from an horrible death. Loyalty and bravery are their qualities just like the knights of the round table. To them their king meant everything and they would have risked their lives to save him.

The attitude of the frog is therfore more an originality and perhaps a fun element of the picture than anything else.

Hope this all makes sense for everybody. Let me know if according to you the terms of the contest are not respected enough, I'd appreciate. Cheers!

Merci G'rard, oui le démon ressortait un peu trop, mais je dois encore le travailler, à plus!:)

Hello,

This is a great piece. I love the cartoon look which is not very commonplace on this kind of contest.
I've got a 2 cents suggestion, but maybe it's a bit late. Anyways... Maybe you could show us where the hanging girl's missing boot is. Like showing a goblin in the background playing with it or trying to eat it, chewing the leather. That would help in terms of story telling. Just an idea. Great piece.
Bonne chance, Thierry.

I see what you mean with the passage from green to blue, maybe a little more fog at the entrance will even it out. Cheers!:)

most excellent picture, dude, only I am not the
fan of anime-style faces, but you only got one such
and even that is half hidden so it's not that bad :p

so, back to the good stuff now, the creatures are
many and imaginative, which is great. The amount
of detail is good too, in my eyes, at least :).
The colors are great, too and the creatures have
much life in them.
The whole scene is filled with pleasantly distributed
interesting stuff.

Good Job !

Anyway, that is looking good. Love what you did to the background. It definately has more depth. AWESOME on that dude  Just on suggestion, how bout darkening the whole image a bit. Just a little bit... a tad bit. so you can get a more wider value range. Try it, it's up to you ;)

Squibbit mucho thanks for liking it, I kind of agree with Igor, I'm not so influenced by Mangas in general, not I don't like that style, but I just don't read them and don't very often look at them on TV... apart from Miyasaki's movie, but then again are his movies considered as Mangas? Maybe it's the girl that gives this feeling, but she's not completely finished yet.

dunkelgold, gee I wish I received the long comment cause the short one is really cool!:) :)
Thank you!

Hi Arc80, good thing I work a lot last week-end cause this week was lost for this painting!

Good work on yours!

Hey jeromoo! that's a good one with the signature, haha:thumbsup: , true I sign on the lores pic before posting the update, so the strokes are broad, but will be much smaller on the final, I promise!!!:) Thanks for liking it man!

Merci d'avance!! et good luck for this challenge!:)

For those of you who have the some spare time, here is the story behind the picture.

On their way to the far east of this world for a delicate diplomatic mission, a small group of representatives of these different species (Mister Todd, a leader of the Human-frogs race is part of it) was attacked by the pirates of the dark forest.
The diplomatic mission was a success and a new alliance was established between the two regions, thanks to the princess's diplomatic qualities. The world of Trez has since then lived a golden age of prosperity from the opening of new roads of commerce and trade.
This painting made by the official painter of the court (STO5: pronounce Esteaofyv) is now hanging on the walls of the grand dinning room of the magnificent citadel of Kyor. A view of this citadel has also been painted by the same artist, but that's another story.

Wow Thierry, you're done too

That demon in the lower right corner rocks, would make an amazing t-shirt

So how does it feel to be finally done, on my part it feels great.

i think the confirmation emails are only a recent thing, and i think mibus sends them out manually instead of it being automatic.but he said if ur thumbnails fine, its all fine.

:) Well, if I continue receiving these kind requests, I might be tempted to go for a trailer for an animation film, as this is more the type of work I do for a living. If I can't make it I'll go for a comic book... someday... when I have time...before I leave this earth...

Hehe, cheers again Calisto and dunkelgold:thumbsup:  , so stay tuned!

Hey, if you are going to animate this, let me know. Maybe i can tag along, hehehe. Did you develop the story yet? This would be fun dude. So yeah, think about making a nice trailer for a featured film, heeheehee... tempting isn't it

cheers

Hey Archie, sure I'll let you know man, I'll keep on posting stuff in the gallery and will try to get a personal site up and running in the few next weeks. I have just a few other projects I'm working on at the moment to finish. So no story yet, only the outline on the first page of this thread, but my imagination is always busy on this kind of ideas, so it'll take a couple of days during a holyday to write some more on the subject.

It would be great to make a project where people would have some input, just like the building up of an image for a CGTALK contest... what do you think?
I'll see what I come up with.:)

Cheers,
Thierry

That would be interesting, but expect the good and bad about posting works and getting public criticism. It would be fun though still. Hey, angel wants to join too, heehee.

Well, PM me or Email me what you have in mind and we'll take it from there and see what time permits us to do. I also have some projects at hand, but it's mostly freelance. So let's take it a day at a time. Let me know how the progress in writting the story coming along. If you need help and some suggestions, you know where to reach me.
This would be awesome if we can seriously make a kick arse trailer, heeheehee.

Oh yeah, do yo have a website?

cheers :buttrock:

Thanks, Edouardo I much appreciate comments from a pro like you:thumbsup: . Good luck for your entry too.:) :)

Yes Archie, sure it's not something easy to do, and there are probably some legal considerations too, to solve or to consider beforehand.
It's just a thought at the moment as I'm currently litteraly burried under a huge amount of work. But as you say let's see how things can move maybe on a week by week basis.
I'm working on a personal site which won't be ready before a couple of weeks, but you can check some of what I've done the last ten years here: site (http://www.oniriapictures.com) . From there you will see that I'm now mostly working with CGI, as it's faster to get good results on complex characters.
Thanks for proposing you help man!:bounce:

Hi the1st_angel, thanks for joining the idea! glad this would interest you. Making an animation project is a long process and certainly can benefit from artists like you. A next step would be to have a webpage dedicated to it... Stay tuned!

Hi ilusiondigital! Many thanks man, glad you like it and use it as a wallpaper:bounce: .

'Got no idea for the judging timing, this is my first time on a CGtalk challenge.
I guess it will take some time for everybody to review the huge number of great entries. Not an easy job they have to do! who knows it can arrive any day!

Hi Calisto so nice to see your still visiting my thread from time to time:)

Thanks for your wishes we'll see what happens next with this picture. Be sure as soon as I have time I'll do some more long time work. Usually I don't spend more than a day on a piece so this was quite a change for me!

See you soon! Cheers:)

kuzgunoglu , many thanks for stopping by and for your comments mate. Good luck for your entry. :)
