View Full Version : painting effetcs on poly???
InnerVortex 12-19-2001, 12:37 PM hey ppl.. im really a beginer on maya.. so please take it easy...
thats the problem.. i did a head with polygons.. now im trying to put some painting effetcs on it... but when im making it paintable it says that cant paint on poly mesh.. and i cant convert to things like nurbs.. and subd.. the model must have some bugs that dont let it...can u guys help here? do i have other way to do that?

as far as I know there is no way to us Paint FX on poly objects unfortunitley, I found this out myself no long ago, if your tring to do fur or hair you might want to try planes with transparency maps
Indeed and unfortunately Maya can't do paint fx on polys.

i rarely use paint fx
but i think its possible to use paint fx on polys
if you paint a normal curve on your poly objekt, (make the objekt live) select a brush, and then use Attatch brush to Curves.
hope this helps
sorry about my crappy english:D

hmm yeah thxs guys... theres allways a way... the dam thing is allways harder too:)
thats a bit unfair:( i really like polygon modelling...but.. well.. thats the way it is..

Stick a NURBs surface underneath the Poly one. The strokes will grow through.

yes i think thats will have to do the trick.. thats works fine for simple models.. or even for especific parts of it.. i think i gona that way...
the problem is when u go for all more complex models..
if u wanna do paint effects u better use nurbs for modelling.. hehehe

yes i tryed to conver to subs.. but.. doesnt work.. the model is mest up..
about attach curves to the polys.. i dont know much about it yet.. lool... and dont like much nurbs modeling:(
wel.. thanks.. i think i really have to study more this before go to painting effets

Don't you need to have your uv constraint to 0/1 before you can use Artisan and Paint Effect with poly???

yes i think so.. i read that someplace.. but doesnt get yet what it means.. heheheheh
is that when u scale the texture so it dont tiles?or does have nothing to do with it?

When you look at the UV view, with a polygonnal model, the texture don't fit properly in the 0 to 1 space. With subd or nurbs all UV coordinate are in this space everytime, bon not for poly(don't ask me why, I couldn't remember :)))
You have to correct that before you could apply fur etc...
Hope this help

hi ,inner.
i use poly modelling, too.
in my recent work, i used paint effects in that way:
creating nurbs spheres under the poly, and trying to
shape the CVs to match the poly shape.
planes are an option, but i use a very thin cylinder.
to make eyelashes, i used a bended (nurbs) cylinder behind and up the eye hole. used the "brow hair" brush, and removed some
of the gravity to the hairs point up. and sometimes increase the stroke offset.
another way is to attach the stroke to a curve, but i had problems
with that because only some of the hairs constrained to the curve.
there is a very good tutorial about that in :

hey thanks that looks very usefull..
i tryed to put a nurbs inside the mesh but.. the computer is too slow.. i cand do a thing.. with painting effetcs.. cose i get tierd..lol.. maybe with that tut i do something..
that is normal?
like.. i have an amd1.6xp with a geforce3 and 512..
do your computer gets slow when u doing painting effetcs? i have alot of that problem and is really creeping when i trying do lern something by myself..

well, theres a problem.
maya dont like the geforce series, dont like the voodoo series and
lot of them.
the ideal video card to work with maya is
Wildcat, diamond gl , oxygen.
i use a voodoo 3 with 16 mb. the cpu is athlon 900.
maya is incredible fast. but the paint fx slows a little.

Personally, with the 21.83 driver for my GF3, with a PII 350 and 384mo of ram, I can use Paint Effect without no real problem. But I don't have stressed my computer too much...

seems that i have the best and the slowest computer here...
or maybe im not using something right.. cool.. i had my computer always ate 100% cpu usage .. then i notice that when the krnl32.exe gives an error all goes fine(for less than 10%cpu usage).. before that i can move in the view(only with very dificulty) a model of about 30k pols.. in max.. but.. with that file off.. that runs perfectly.. now i go to the taskmanager>proccesses.. in w2k and end that file..
is that normal or my windows is needing a retirement?

It isn't normal... you shoud check what other app you have in background 'cos with the computer you have, and the case you describe it shoudn't exceed 30 ou 40% of cpu usage...
Maybe there's a background apps who steal computer ressource(like a viruses or thing like that)

just a thought Start > Run > msconfig > then turn off all the stuff u don't need. but u probably know this.
