View Full Version : new script for character setup guys, auto low-res mesh generator

once again i'm here to plug myself. but its a really useful script. i swear.
anyhoo, basically this script will auto generate a low res version of a skinned mesh for you. its a pretty simple script really (like seriously), but damn, it can save you a good hour or two of seriously tedious work.
the better your skin is, the more accurate the low res version will turn out. anyway, have a look. its hot off the press, so it may have bugs, but it worked flawlessly on the two characters I tried it on.
To use it, just select your skinned character mesh, and run:
and thats it. You can also delete all the low res objects using:
So yeah, its easy. No longer will people suffer by making low res versions of characters for the sake of interactivity anymore... joy!

This looks really cool, but I've alreayd had trouble making it work. :(
The problem seems to be in finding the skin cluster. The shape that is returned (line 30) is the base shape, not the deformed one, so the skin isn't in its history, and the program crashes at line 32.

sporadic - is it a poly object? can you post the actual error message you're getting please?
I've actually fixed a minor bug in it, which caused the script to die when working on meshes with non-unique names. should be fine now.

Ok, I'll rerun it. I can't at the moment. By tracing the code, the problem wasn't the geometry type (it was poly), but that it got the wrong version (the undeformed, which doesn't have the skin cluster in its history). This resulted in the return string for cluster being an empty string, which of course can't return attributes.
I'll try it again when I get the chance.

Hey MAc, look like a great script, but couldn't make it work..I've test it on a character, selecting its body, then i run the script it goes on for 10mn at least..then when it's finished nothing happened..??
I've done it only once, but it seems it didn't work..how well I will test it back.
it's a great idea though

matt - when did you download the script? There was a bug in the version I published over the weekend, that I didn't pick up till this morning. so thats been fixed, so try it again. the script is quite different internally now.

Ok, I'll give it another go when I get the chance. I downloaded it right after your initial post, so I'm sure that's probably the problem.

Hey Macaroni, the script works like a charm ! I was always a big fan of yours, and with this zooSurgeon only a minute passes and I have a perfect replica of my character, only sliced and diced http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Your making cool scripts hand over fist, keep up the good work http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

great tool ... just if u can add the new character parts to a NEW LAYER .. so one can on/off the display layer ..
04-23-2005, 11:28 PM
firas - i should make the script select all the low res parts once they're made, so you can easily add them to a layer yourself. I personally don't like them in a separate layer, but I can see how a lot of people would like that feature. So I'll put in a "select proxies" button in the script so you can do it manually yourself.

select the all low res parts at the end will solve it :)
i dont know what most of people do .. but i use layers for low/hi characters .. now with your script ... i'll have 3 layers : parts/low/hi ...

Well, I *finally* got 5 minuts to download and test the newest version. Unfortunately, it's looking for a proc that's not in the archive, zooGetFlagArguments. I've checked the three script files (zooUtils, zooSurgeon and zooArrays, and it's not in any of them. Is there an additional file I need to download to get this to work?
04-26-2005, 12:38 AM
sporadic - so sorry man, it should be fine now... it was in a script called zooFlags which wasn't being included in the dependencies proc, and thus wasn't being auto-sourced... anyway, all fixed now. when u next get another 5 minutes, try the latest package. it should definitely be fine now.
