Visual effects house CafeFX (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22CafeFX%22) used NewTek Inc. (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22NewTek%20Inc%22)'s LightWave 3D to create the 3D elements in nearly 600 shots produced for Robert Rodriguez' feature film Sin City.
Sin City, based on Frank Miller's acclaimed graphic novels, visually recreates the noir graphic style Miller used in his stories. This required virtually every shot to include effects work.
CafeFX artists created the computer graphic environments used in the movie. The company operates a full-production computer graphic image (CGI) studio in Santa, Maria, Calif.
Jeff Goldman and Everett Burrell supervised two of CafeFX's teams for the work on Sin City.
"Virtually all used LightWave, but probably a good 550 (shots) were primarily LightWave due to the amount of 3D CG required for the shot," Goldman says.
San Antonio-based NewTek is a leading provider of full-featured video editing, animation and special effects tools including TriCaster, VT[4] and LightWave 3D, winner of the 2003 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award.
