Hi
i am trying to find a plugin that would export rib, or use outside renderman renderers. I have found ribbit, but i cannot make the thing work, it is giving me export failed messages. any trick here? any solution?

if not , what other plugins exporters or middle programs do you use?

Unfortunately, the KayosIII Wings plugin to export to Ribbit Renderman
works only with Wings3D 0.98.19c, as said at his site
http://www.midcoast.com.au/~rgcoy/software.html

I havent tested it yet, but perhaps you can reopen your work
in Wings3d 0.98.19c just to export in RIB format.

I like renderman as a renderig engine but I will say that Wings is ill suited for use with renderman. Renderman is a unique renderer in that it is a spline renderer. It renders splines and curves as splines and curves. Ther emust be a file converter otu there somewhere to convert one of Wings export formats to RIB.

My ManifoldLab does a good job. Export from Wings3D to Nendo format.
Import into ManifoldLab. Apply shaders for colors and displacement or
just send vertex colors to RIB ... and away you go.

Converting to RIB format. I'm actively developing it at this time. The program is rough in some places ... and is only BETA software ... but we are trying to slow down development enough to freeze a really solid release. I'm available for support VIA AIM and e-mail.
Works on Linux/OSX/Win32

An example RIB render front-ended by ManifoldLab ...

Hi
actually i downloaded your software before, i was not aware of its renderman support, i dropped using it because objs were not coming proper or software was crashing.
it would be great if there are simple howto``s that show how your software operates. i would be eager try uv mapping abilities, but some stuff does not make sense under the uvmappers menu for example, i mean naming.
And, if there is a list of renderman features and lights that is supported during the export, that would help alot (wings to renderman list )

anywas thx for the tip , i will try getting the newer version

thnx

If you were willing to go a few rounds with me ... I'm sure we can determine is ManifoldLab can be right for you. It is tough to know what to do with it w/o a formal explanation of some sort.

Right now ... in terms of RenderMan ... it can export texture, vertex colors, and procedural requests in the color and displacement channels. If I were you ... I would not use the new version until we can discuss what you want to do with it ... if it can do it ... and how it will do it step by step. I can make a step by step chapter for you if it sounds right.

Lights are just hard-coded right now ... I think they might be point source lights. I'm not sure. Creating a better light interfaces is something I can do in maybe a week or less.

Err, no.
First, RenderMan is an API, not a rendering engine. Second, RenderMan compliant renderers today are all perfectly well suited to render geometry from Wings both as polygons as well as a subdivision surface. Neither primitive requires any fancy conversion.
The mesh from Wings is guaranteed to be always non-manifold, which makes it particular suited for the latter case. In fact, from a programmer's pov, the difference between exporting a mesh from Wings to Wavefront OBJ as compared to going to a RenderMan RIB is of purely syntactical nature. :)

Cheers,

Moritz
