Chrissyboy had a good solution for this via the subsurface scattering shader.
Maybe he'll chime in?

Fresnel in the luminance channel would help. Arndt has a transluscency plugin at vreel

There's another Italian user named Piero Desopo (nickname: phoenixart) who made this material using proximal and colorizer. He called it Xumates.
