I'm having some major issues with displacement mapping here. Specifically, I'm trying to texture a model of a mountain (which was made entirely through displacement mapping) with a 3d cloud texture linked to a displacement map. When i render out a small .iff i get a pretty decent texture and it looks like what i'm looking for. However, when i try to convert displacement to poly, maya sits there for about 3 hours then crashes. The error i get is a C++ runtime error/low memory. I wouldn't be as surprised by this error if i didn't have 2 gig of ram to attack maya with. Am i missing something here or is 2 gig of ram really not enough memory to handle this kind of thing?
Would it help if i scaled down my model in maya, did the whole displacement thing, then scaled it back up?
Are there any tricks at all to this, or is displacement simply a computer beat down?
Any advice is much appreciated
