View Full Version : Proportional Tool?
leigh 04-13-2005, 03:41 AM I promise I did a search on this before starting a thread :D
I got the awesome Gnomon Aaron Sims character modelling DVDs the other day and it's totally inspired me to model a character I was going to do in LightWave in XSI instead.
However, I cannot get the same proportional tool that he uses... I can activate proportional modelling, but I still have to make selections in order for it to work - on the DVD, Aaron is in Object selection mode, yet he manages to display and move the points on the model around.
I am guessing it's some small setting somewhere but can't figure it out

hmm are you talking something like Modo falloff tools? where you dont need to have a selection. Afaik XSI dont have that , you need to have something selected for the prop tool to work. I even checked the manuals twice and there is no mention of what you said. Maybe he is using a script\plugin?

He uses it constantly and the way he talks about it, it certainly sounds like it's a native option. He switches on Proportional modelling and then somehow... he manages to do this without making selections.
The docs say that when using the Move tool while in Prop mode, the cursor should change to a circle (as it does in the video), but mine doesn't.
And the fact that the Proportional options have a "Tagged Points Only" option (which currently isn't selected) means that generally it is supposed to work without having selections.

ah ok *slaps forehead
yes it works like that with the move points tool , just turn on prop and hit "m" and go ahead.
if you dont see the effect that means your radius is too small , hold down R and lmb drag to adjust your radius.

Aah nevermind! I realised he was using the Move Point Tool instead of the Translate tool.
Silly me

Works here, I just pressed the PROP button, then pressed the "M" key and got the circle. If you right click on the PROP button you get the settings panel.

I think if you hold 'R' and drag with the L-mouse you can adjust the falloff size on the fly.

since we're at it...
right click the prop mode and you'll get direct access to the radius and the falloff curve (not to mention options like operate on selections only) right away.
Prop tool in XSI is ok, although i prefer the LW one (old working habits perhaps), now XSI Prop would be killer if we could move Edges and Polys also instead of only Points, maybe in XSI4.5 :D

I thought that Aaron Sims video was pretty inspiring too. I liked the way he made so much use of the proportional tool in conjunction with the smooth deform. That smooth deform is killer.

Doesn't it?
I thought it was only when using the Move points tool but worked with t/r/s,maybe I'm wrong though,I rarely want to use prop on something else than points anyways.
I meant using the "M" (forgot the name of the tool), should also move Edges or Polys.
Sorry if it was not clear :)

Hi everybody, Leigh :)
I am new to SXI, and I just played with the Proportional tool today, thanks to Leigh I got to discover the possible value of this tool.
Now, It didnīt work at first, but then I increased the radious and voila ! My conclusions are:
1. It does work while you are in Translate, Rotate or Scale tool, but in this mode it works kind of the way "soft selection" does in MAX, (yeah I donīt like software quotation, but I need it now), meanin that you have a visual feedback of the amount of weight each vertice is gettin.
2. And of course it works while in "M" mode. :) In this scenario it works the way ZBrush sculpts the mesh. And you only get the colored weight feed back when applying the tool. ( I find this way nicer ) but you cant do rotation or scaling here.
That is what I got so far... this post would take a while since its one of my firsts...
Regards.

Aaron Simms (maybe Michael Isner) really uses the Prop modeling tool a lot in the Experience XSI book. I actually like it more than the LW equivalent. I like the way you can see influences better and to me XSI's implementation is much easier to orient in a 3D user viewport.
You can also use the scroll wheel on your mouse to adjust the proportional radius, for anyone who prefers to use a mouse while modeling. Applies for painting weights too.

Hey, is the smooth deform in softimage XSI foundation? I.E. if I get the DVD, will I be able to use the same techniques?

Unfortunately no smooth/relax deformer in foundation for now.
I am pretty sure it will find its way to foundation soon I think.
Nope, but u can have a smooth Op with the free RCTools :scream:

Are the RC Tools like the Softimage tools.

it depends on your preferences, but some tools i like better than the ones in xsi.
just install and play with them, they are extremely helpfull.
