Has anybody made a "turing page in a realy old book" animation, like the intro of Shrek for example.

What wold be the right strategy for doing this effect.
I need some help to get me going in the right direction, then I will manage just fine I think.

Animation isnt realy my thing since Im a lightdesigner. Just need this for a private little private project.

any tips would be great!

thanks

I'm probably the last person that should be helping you but you can use dynamics and play around with that for a while. I would personally just animate the cvs on a nurbs plane, that way i can get the nice fold I want and i can animate the edge of the page curling up a bit, but thats just me doing things the hard way so that I can get it the way I want :surprised

í think i would give each page an skelleton and animate it by hand..
dynamics will be tricky to control i would say

cheers

just creat 3 parallel curves....loft them....to form 1 page. then put the pivot on the curve where you will have the spine of the book....and then rotate on that axis.

its fairly simple really(its the first tut in the book)...if u cant figure it out using only 2 keyframes...then i will go into more detail.

great!
thanks for all your answers. I tried with just altering cv:s first and it worked out very well. But now I will try 2byts solution to.

2byt:
what is the name of the book?
I have most new books for maya, but this one I missed.

goto 3dbuzz.com and watch the video tutorial on clusters and weights. its about 13 mins and does a pretty good job introducing the basic functions of clusters and weighting individual cv's to allow lag after movement.

it was originally german....called Exploring Maya 4. 30 studies in 3d by Maximillian Schoenherr. I do recommend the book if you are just exploring Maya and need to learn the interface and to understand the basic concepts. They show a couple of tricks, but other then that it doesnt go in depth enough if you want to really get to grips with the app. It reads very easily, and is basically 30 tutorials nothing of which is very complicated.

Like i said, the turning page....takes literally 5 minutes to do.....probably 2 minutes if you know what u are doing. The trick is the rotation of the curve turns the whole page....you just have place the pivot point along the spine. you only need 2 keyframes...1 for the beginning and 1 after it was rotated 180. The middle curve rotates at a slightly different rate then the other 2 curves in order to achieve the bend in the page.

Probably the best book i have seen is Mastering Maya series. I have 3...but it is good enough for 4. Its a real solid book and with 2 excellent tuts on doing a nurbs characacter and human character....from modeling, to rigging, and texturing, animation and rendering. It lightly covers all of the other tools, including MEL although it does neglect the unlimited features such as cloth and fur.
