Hey everyone, It's been a long time since I've been on the forums, and I'm modeling a new character for a short animation which is about a barbarian type figure.

C&C definatly welcome
I'll need some tips, since this is the first character I've ever modeled.

Heres the Concept:

And heres the Progress of the first day of work:

On the second day I got a lot more work done. Now there's some muscle definition and the character looks more like the concept.

Added more to the arms and added ears.

oof. Cool concept, and until I saw your mesh, nice model. But damn man, if you do intend to animate this guy, I would heartily recommend redoing the entire face. Take a look at facial topology (there's a sticky in the modeling subforum), and try to incorporate those principles into your models. As it stands making blendshapes and skinning this guy will be an unbelievable pain in the ass.

(just saw that this is your first model)
-mesh density. Depending upon your skill level and modeling habits, the density of a mesh can vary. But as it stands, given the detail which you are getting out of the face, there is far too much geometry in that region. Proper use of edgeloops will allow you to represent the same face more accurately, and with far less geometry.
-edge loop flow. The direction that a series of sequential edges takes is extremely important for organic modeling. Do a search for edgeloops. This is just about the most important concept for polygon modeling. Essentially what you want is to have the edges follow natural contours, and be layed out in such a manner that they will deform realistically when animated.
-polygons. You should try and keep your faces mostly in quads. Judging by your mesh, you already know this. Also try and keep quads mostly square. In you face you have many extremely elongated rectangular faces. That can mess with the smoothness of your model (which I suspect wouldn't look nearly as smooth if it wasn't GI rendered), esp. once you start animating.
-proportions. Not bad. You should reshape his chest a little so that he has a defined ribcage (and I don't mean modeling ribs) barrel. Also, as it stands, he's gonna have hips that are too small, and arms that are too large.

This being your first character, you've made several mistakes that many beginners make. Its natural, and actually for your first character this is quite good. It looks enough like a human to be quite acceptable, and other than the issues with the mesh itself, you are definitely on the right track. Well done.

Yes the hair looks sweet but you should really listen to Goon as he brings up a few good points that will really make your model stand out. Better work on that now before you go too far down the pipeline to change anything.

I am already starting to change things a bit. Compared to the first mesh I started with I think it's begining to shape up more.

Thanks everyone.

You're progressing really well, and I love the model. The hair is excellent, and the muscle definition is starting to look very good. I'd recommend making the wrists a little longer, that's about the only thing I can see right now.

Keep up the good work!
