View Full Version : troll w/ blackadder sound-bite
Awesome_Dave 04-12-2005, 01:09 PM hi! i just did this for a job animation test, the character rig was supplied by the company (axis animation) and so was the sound clip.
troll talking stuff (http://www.certaindoompossibly.com/davidloh_test.wmv)
there were a couple of mouth shapes which I found difficult to get a satisfactory shape out of..especially the "hue" and where he says "may your" (second time round). Still, I'm pleased with what I've achieved. now fingers are crossed with regards to the job hehehe.
- crits & comments welcome.

Did the company give you permission to publish this? I'd be careful of putting something like a company animation test on-line, especially before you've got the job, and especially as you're using their assets...
As for the animation itself, there are some nice gestures, the lipsynch works fine for the clip, but overall it feels a bit floaty, need to sharpen up some of those ins and outs.

hmm i see what you mean, but at the same time, I'm not exactly passing the rig/character off as my own am i? if they ask me to take it down, i will though!

Gday mate,
Your animation, while a good attempt... is lacking in a few areas. First off the pros :)
1) the movement is ok - backs up what the guy is saying to a certain degree and gives him a certain human like behaviour
2) the eye movements are not bad, the fact that he looks straight into camera acknowledges the audience and helps the character literally talk TO them.
now the cons :D :
1) the movement has a large gap in the middle where nothing happens.... he literally freezes except for his right arm.
2) I'm sorry to say it bro, but the lip sync is poor.... the only words I saw actually go in line with the sound file were "awkward moment".... it seems as though you've attempted melding the phrases together in terms of mouth movement, which is good... but in turn uve also hindered yourself by not opening the character's mouth enough... its like hes speaking with a crooked smile. Play around with different levels of opened jaw, especially for the main vowels.
3) the character's "in betweens" are not apparent. What I mean by this is, even though you've animated the character to perform an action when he needs to, you havent really taken the time to notice the subtelties of movement while he talks - for example, a slight sway in his torso as he flings his hand about, or a small breathing action to show one more act of life.
You've made an alright attempt but there are definitely a few things u need to explore. My final crit is that the animation simply seems a bit rushed, it may not be... but it just seems that way. I often find doing lip sync becomes a lot easier when you have a mirror with you or taking a movie of urself mouthing out the phrases and facial movements. Get down and dirty and do everything your character does, otherwise you will never know if you're on the right track!
Anyways, good luck in future projects, and keep on animating!

I have to restart the damn laptop, sound isnt playing properly.
From what I saw (and the best way, in my opinion, is to watch wihtout the sound unless youre critting the lipsync) the animation looked a bit rigid. As for the character, youre fine with that, belongs to rigging101.com its a free download to do with what you will. Wich it appears axis is testing people with it.
