I havent posted on heremuch, so a rookie I am...

This is my senior project I just completed here at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. Please be kind to the technical mishaps and what not, I am merely an animator....

I pray everything works right and you are all able to view it. Please respond asap if you aren't able to. Feel free to check out the rest of the site as well...Just click on the background image to do so. Also, apologies for the video quality, had to get the size as low as I could.

Very nice! I really like the facial expressions and especially that rat :D
I liked it a lot!

I'm also planning to go to Ringling this upcoming year :D
I'll be in huge debt but i'm sure it will be worth it!

Well Good Luck on your job hunting ;)

This animation has very nice facial expression, textures, in most parts lighting, but I see some issues in:

1. editing, like the music, misses out to build up drama or dynamics. Every seems to go the same past.

2. the body movements are often abrupt - simple smoothing of the curves will not help - what you tried. Ringling's animations tend to have good stories, but not good transitions or gravity to the characters, with some exceptions. The mouse animation on the other hand is much better executed than the old man.

3. the story itself:
it is a good story, still like there is a missing main message. I know its there, it is just not enough emphasized in my opinion.

Don't understand me wrong, this is very good executed, but the has issues.
Texturing is excellent; characters design excellent, rigging obviously very good for facial control of the old man.

In overall good work, excellent design.

I agree with ya herbert, on many levels. In the end, the piece bacame more about finding great moments to show character animation. I wanted the overall idea to be a contrast between the ones who get it all and the ones who have nothing and never will.

The rat definitly is more refined than the old man. The shots I worked mostly with on the old man are the close-ups moreso than the full body. The rat on the other hand was just a load of fun so I couldnt really put him down! Thanks for the comments!

I cannot understand why people don't answer on this post.
Wonderful animation of the mouce, beautiful backgrounds and lighting and shading, and texturing. I do see some little issues, but the mouse animation is so powerful that it overshadows anything else, for what you did not have time to finish or more dedicate.
This is certainly the best character animation from a student
- the animation of the demonic mouse.

Hey man, I really would love to see this animation, but I have a mac :D could you possibly render it in a .mov or mpeg format?

I almost applied to ringling, but the admissions guy I met with twice was a real jerk to me..and it kind of turned me away from the college. How do you like the college?

Cheers

Sure thing. I'll put a .mov file into the "medium" button. Just click on that and it should be there. I'll put it in there either tonight or tomorrow. Just keep checkin back.

As for Ringling, I love it. I'm about to graduate here and I can't explain how much I've learned. You've got to know you want this, and go for it. The inspiration is all around ya, especially from the crazy talent we have here. And you can't deny that this school has crazy connections from its reputation. So far this year I've had the oppurtunity to talk with Imageworks, Dreamworks, Pixar, EA, and still more coming. So all in all, if you are into working your a$$ off for what you want, then Ringling is the place to be.

Thanks for putting it into .mov format!

Yeah, when I visited, one thing they said as that you work soooo hard. How many hours do you think worked a week at school related stuff?

Thanks man!

some weeks it was over 100 easily. I would get to the labs around 8-830 am and I would head home around 12, give or take a few minutes. That was during first semester Senior year when we started production on our thesis.

Now that's a nice original story! Awesome work with the animation. I especially like the subtle spots in the beginning.

Congrats!

great work! This thing looks very polished - great animation, great design, great idea! The one thing I felt lacking was in the story department. I LOVE the idea of a magic rat. I was so enchanted by the idea that I didn't realize he was the antagonist. He reminded me so much of the rats in Cinderella dancing around her bedroom making her a dress for the ball. When the homeless man and the rat start fighting, I wasn't sure who to root for. I wanted the rat to win because the homeless guy was trying to steal his food, but then again - the rat was stealing from someone else and he was beginning to look menacing. "I wanted the overall idea to be a contrast between the ones who get it all and the ones who have nothing and never will."

Can you explain this some more? I'm really curious to hear the director's commentary. Again, great work - you are very skilled and this thing was nothing short of phenomenal.

Thanks for all the great comments guys and girls! Yeah it is hard to figure which one to root for. My intention wasn't to make one or the other the primary antagonist. Its funny because throughout any critiques I've had, that question has come up, but never directly addressed after the piece was going through production. My intent with the story was more so to entertain you, as well as show off good animation to land me a career somewhere! I hope the lack of distinction between the two doesn't take away to much from the piece itself.

WARNING -- SPOILER
Wow, you have a spoiler alert for your thesis!

Awww! He cooks the rat! I was thinking they would team up or have some kind of happy Speilberg ending. :scream: Loved it!

Hey man, are you going to make the "medium" button a quicktime format? I really want to see your work!! :bounce:

I also sent you a pm, but I just wanted to tell you that I am applying Ringling under Illustration, and minoring in the new minor: visual development. I am really excited, and hopefully I get accepted there!

I've added a DivX version to the "medium" link on my website. If any of you still can't view it then you can download the player from cNet or download.com.
