Hi,
Assuming that you work with 3dsmax 5.0 I can help you with the following. You can use practically any light you want to generate soft shadows. (even real colored shadows with max 5)
Anyway, for instance if you use a spotlight, a thing to remember is that you need to set the shadow- type to soft shadow then, (very important) set the SIZE of the light. You can also set the shape of the light rectangular and so on. if you'r edges still look sharp then increase the size of the light... With max default light- settings the softshadows will look quite artificial, increasing the quality, in the shadow- rollout, will make it appear more realistic.
TIP: If you have transparent raytraced objects, you can get colored (transparent) shadows, cast by the geometry... Just set transparent on and filter color on and you can get the church- window- effect....

i get such shadows by changing the shadow color to gray, decrease the density a bit and sent the sample range to 20-25

first, set up a key light( directional works best) then duplicate this light three or four times, place them slightly in different angles-
and use several sample ranges(i think itīs this parameter-some times ago i used max--> in maya itīs called dmap filter size)
-tip:jeremy birn has written a wonderful book about lightning and rendering
