While I dont really watch MTV, this is pretty cool

The revolution will be televised. Xbox 2 -- aka Codename Xenon, the next-generation gaming console from Microsoft -- will make its first appearance on a yet-untitled half-hour special that will be broadcast globally across all MTV stations.

The move bucks industry protocol to make major debuts at E3 in Los Angeles-the largest trade show in the gaming industry. "It doesn't make sense to unveil the product behind a closed door, at a trade-only event. We wanted to talk directly to the consumer first," said Peter Moore, corporate vp-worldwide marketing and publishing for Microsoft Xbox.

The MTV special, hosted by actor Elijah Wood on May 12, will feature a performance by rock band the Killers. Athletes and celebs will show off the console's new features. MTV will air teaser spots prior to the event and screening parties will be held in countries in which MTV airs.

Oh man, I am so importing me one of these (and a high dev TV to go with it). It's meant to be out State-side in time for Christmas this year isn't it? I gather Microsoft has given the order to start ramping down production of Xbox (1) so I guess it's close.

damn, now i have to watch mtv... well at least Elijah Wood is hosting it [we know from LOTR all the Hobbits are big gamers].

but i'll be damn if they get Carson Daily, Kid Rock, and Snoop D O double G to get on camera and talk about the Xbox 2. i would rather have some Microsoft people up there talking about.

...like "Halo 2" at last E3? That bummed me out. That was one of the main things I wanted to see.

Too bad I cancelled my digital subscription to (la)M(e)TV long ago. Oh well, I'm sure everyone will get a view of it sooner or later with the wonders of the internet.

I'm hearing that XBox will not support first gen XBox games due to a licensing riff b/w nVidia and M$ since ATI will be the gpu supplier. This may rethink my need to get an XBox 2 on it's release. It'll be on my Xmas list, tho'!

Soon or later an x86emu+gpu pack for xbox2 for xbox1 is not out of the question yet for MS. With the given power and gpu compatibility, it is not far fetched either.

Anyway, I would be in the line to get one (depending on the games it will have).

And what better place to talk directly to the consumer than on a non-videogame-related TV channel at a non-videogaming-related-specific time rather than at the year's most awated gaming-related show where all journalists are going be expecting their videogame-related news and have their articles ready for this particular videogame-specific time period. Don't expect major news outlet to offer widespread videogame coverage twice in arow. E3 is where it's at, not on some random set in some MTV studio.

exactly, plus, being that casual gamers have no clue what the hell E3 is. I think this is a smart move.

TV-channel-specific show chosen over world-wide coverage of E3 by all videogame related media (that includes MTV) and even non-videogame related media. The publicity they get from some MTV presentation compared to an E3 presentation is ridiculously small. How many MTV-competing media will want to write publicity for MTV on their front page? The only reason MS is doing this is because they don't want to face Sony head-on, so they quickly searched for the next best thing, which is by far not even comparable.

Thats probably why Microsoft is doing this. They may be scared, as they should be, that the PS3 will get all of their publicity at E3.

They know Sony has a bigger fan base and the PS3 has a lot more hype and going head to head with them at E3 would be suicide. Their new system would be stuck in PS3's shadow. The best chance they have is to throw a few punches to weaken the big S before they even get in the ring.

What makes you think E3 is bigger than MTV? Seriously, when do you go about your day and hear people casually talking about E3? Do you honestly think that E3 reaches more people than MTV? Did I miss when E3 got a cable station and millions of viewers could watch E3 from the comfort of their living rooms? How is this a dumb move, especially when you consider that MTV will share costs of promotion of the Xbox 2 unveiling, and reach more people who probably wouldn't know about it anyway. E3 is popular among people who are already gamers. They'll be on top of any xbox 2 news anyway. Plus this all happens before E3 and when E3 rolls around they'll get hyped there just the same there anyway. How is this not a smart move again?

When do you hear people casually talking about MTV's videogame-related content?

Do you honestly think that E3 reaches more people than MTV?

E3 will reach more people who actually want to hear about videogames, will reach more journalists waiting to hear about the lastest consoles, and will be more widely reported due to the lack of conflict among competiting media outlets. A news show is more likely to make a report on E3 than make a report on a competiting TV show. MS will have to make a second press-specific unveiling if it wants some of the attention it would get at E3.

How is this a dumb move, especially when you consider that MTV will share costs of promotion of the Xbox 2 unveiling, and reach more people who probably wouldn't know about it anyway.

Cost is a no-issue, and speaking of cost it would be better to spend it on an event awaited by all interested parties (especially the media) and a lot of people around booth babes and the likes rather than on an unveiling in some cramped studio with a handful of people (you can't have over a thousand people walking around the studio or a room packed with journalists like at E3).

E3 is popular among people who are already gamers. They'll be on top of any xbox 2 news anyway. Plus this all happens before E3 and when E3 rolls around they'll get hyped there just the same there anyway. How is this not a smart move again?

E3 is the top event to make this unveiling unless they are afraid of being overshadowed, it is the event that journalists from all sorts of news outlets and others (CNN, MTV, etc) are expecting and going to attend. It is popular among gamers AND non-gamers (the media). The media reports on it, hence the world learns about it. There aren't a lot of news outlets that are waiting for the occasion to show pictures or footage taken from MTV studios.

Unveiling it on MTV is a very good business move for MS - there is NO doubt that MTV gets to many more direct consumers (in the perfect demographic) than any single trade show.... now the only thing I don't like is that I hate MTV and don't get it... but I am sure that it will be all over the news and net very shortly after it's announcement.

I think the MTV thing could work for them. It could reach people who would not take the time to read an article about Xbox2 (since they like Sony). As long as the Xbox2 is showing at E3 in force, it will still get big write ups from the regular gaming press, too. And for the mags that come out monthly, write ups from both events will print in the same issue anyway.

THose controllers look way too damn small (even though from a photo it is tough to tell)... I sooooo hope they atleast offer a controller the same size of the 1st X-box controller. But I know after the flack that they took over how "big" the first one was, I know the pantsy-ass-handed people are going to win out.

i hope those aren't the controllers. no black and white buttons, no where to plug in your existing head set [don't make me buy new ones].

i think we can all agree the MTV is a great marketing idea, and having Frodo host is even better, but i think we're all mad because MTV is getting it, and not G4. and i think were all mad because the only channel that was made for gaming sucks [only has maybe 2 hours of viewable content on it a week, not including Icon, Icon is good].

i agree, the majority of all gamers out there have no idea when E3 is, and only half know about it in the first place. yesterday, my local news reported that MS is showing off the Xbox2 on MTV [then again, i do live in Redmond, WA]. but it was all over the place; google news, forums, newspaper. MS's press people are doing a hell of a job.

I guarantee you that there are millions of people who actively purchase games systems, who don't have a clue what E3 is or care. 10 year olds and parents don't know or care what E3 is, but I bet they know MTV and watch on occasion. E3 is awesome, but I had no clue it even existed until I started to hear about it on cgtalk and I have been buying game systems since atari as a tike.

It doesn't really matter where or how they launch Xbox 2 or PS3. Either way it will get wall-to-wall coverage on techsites, news sites, game sites, gadget blogs, ad banners and eventually in mags like Time, Newsweek and so on (e.g. "The New Generation of Game Consoles Has Arrived").

Playstation 3 will always outsell Xbox just because it's Playstaion. You could put a 266 pentium mmx processor and 16mb of ram in it and it would still sell more than Xbox 2.
If Xbox 2 came with a free HI-Def TV, people would stil buy playstation 3.....

Flux, I agree. To a degree of course. Microsoft is having a really hard time in Japan, wow actually. I haven't checked the statistics lately but it's pretty bad. Hopefully all the one system elitists can let go of their partisanship and play games that are meant to entertain. XBOX and Playstation have the pros/cons and Japan and the United States have their ups and their downs, I like the both of them even, all four even!

So with that "logic", then Nintendo should have won and will always win every console war. After all, per-Playstation, Nintendo was the undesputed champ with the original NES. But look how the mighty have fallen. The XB has been picking up alot of steam the last year - even through this console generation is nearing it's close. The PS3 is FAR from a sure hit. I am sure it won't be a dud, but a "sure hit" is not guanenteed.

After all, if a 300 dollar system comes with a Hi-Def TV, both of them can't be any good:)

MS got slaughtered in US. If it cannot become decent in US, then how will Japanese market trust on it? That was the one of the major reasons.

Also, MS played wrong and made mistake. They thought console market would like them because it has more power (a little more that is). But consoles doesn't work the way PC does. This time MS is making sure to catch all RPG and Adventure gamers which makes up a huge chuck of game market. So they are defenitly going to be different.

Sadly, this is very true. There are cool things you can do on the Xbox, but reworking it to fit on the PS2 is too expensive, so you just make everything work on the PS2 and then port to Xbox. About the only thing allowed is higher res textures for the Xbox version, since scaling them down for the PS2 is so easy.
