Sorry for a really basic question. How do I save the UI preferences properly? All at the same time?

I realized that when I save UI preferences (and I like customizing max) then I have to load them one-by-one, kind of. Like, load that keyboard shortcuts and those quad menus and these colors.

What I would like to do is to save and load the entire interface at the same time - dvornik_polys, dvornik_rigging, and so on. I'm really struggling with this. I save and load the "UI scheme", but i obviously miss something.

you don't have to load them one at a time.

customize/save custom UI scheme
customize/load custom UI scheme

that should save the keyboard, colors, menus, quad and quad colors and inversely, load them.

I guess it also means that if I customise the quad layout for instance I have to save it over the layout that's already there with the name of the scheme, right? Or is it saved automatically? I think this is where my mistake is. Also, if I move the scheme from the default location, do I have to move all the corresponding files (menu keyboard and so on) with it?

I know how you feel dvornik...

Sometimes the easy one just like to play hide and seek.:)

I know the idea - save the ui scheme. It just doesn't work in my case. I'm trying to figure out why... Really puzzling. A scheme is a bunch of files, right? Not just one main ui file?

[edit] I'm especially concerned with moving to a different machine and backing up my schemes so I can use them after reinstall. For instance I used to save the UI file to a different drive, without changing the default path - I guess it would create problems.

Hi dvornik,

I see what you mean. I tried saving my ui with a diff layout. All the buttons and icons saved as is but not the layout. Yup, everything is there but not the layout.

I'm still confused :D

I backup my scheme's constantly and it works fine

Hi visualboo,

Everything is saved but only the viewport selection will change back to the usual 4 panel. Is there a way to also save the viewport? Yes, i can do without it but it is good to know that there is a way...

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm.... I don't think so. It should though shouldn't it.

Nope. Just use Save Custom UI/Load Custom UI. Save it with a different name (dvornik_rigging). It will save all the nessesary files... then backup all those. If you have two different scheme's, save both as different names.... and backup all the files with the chosen names.

Also, if I move the scheme from the default location, do I have to move all the corresponding files (menu keyboard and so on) with it?
Yes. There should be 7 files for each scheme.

I know the idea - save the ui scheme. It just doesn't work in my case. I'm trying to figure out why... Really puzzling. A scheme is a bunch of files, right? Not just one main ui file?
It doesn't work on a different machine? What exactly doesn't work? It should load everything except plugs/scripts that arn't on the new machine. Like if you don't have meshtools on the second box... those will be empty quads.

OK, thanks visualboo. I didn't realise I need all 7 files for a scheme. I used to backup or move just the ui file and also I saved some parts of ui under different names.

So if I customize keboard for instance I don't really need to save it individually, just hit OK and after that save ui, correct?

Well, all the save UI does is save them all at once, plus the icon pref.

If you have a full on scheme saved and just tweak a keyboard setting... there's really no need to do a save custom UI scheme. Just save the keyboard and overwrite the current one.

no prob btw

Thank you, I'm much more clear on that.

Just one last question. If I customize one of the 7 files (keyboard) and save it, does it have to be NAMED same as the corresponding ui file if I want it to be loaded automatically? Or the ui file saves links to the current files in use? I hope my question makes sense.

It loads the one that's currently being used, ONLY if the (in prefs) save UI scheme on exit is checked. If that's NOT checked... it uses the one with the same name as the main UI file.

Hope that wasn't too confusing :)
