View Full Version : Rusty droid
Latest Render as of Oct 19
I might add some wires hanging down from his torso. I dont know if i mentioned this but he will be walking on his hands :)

..............................................................................
This is an early start of a droid. Its meant to be put together with random parts found lying about. The two arms will be different as soon as I get to building another one. Not every piece has been textured yet, most just have materials for color differences. The idea is that it will have a "human-like" head and hands, I'm saving those for last though since i've never modeled anything like that. Hopefully this will be ther first model i actually finish. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

if hes made of old parts then try to add dents, scratches etc....but im sure you will get to all that....also dont make all the parts the same texture, material as different parts may be made of different metals.

This is looking really clean!
Please don't get bored with it like you always do. You have hundred scenes that are 25% finished!

I have a big problem with not finishing models to. In fact most the things I post never end up getting finished. But If you keep that attitute what's the point.
I am really bad about that in my sketchbook, where I have whole pages with just like a light outline of a figure, or something.
Anyways, keep on posting updates, and I think it helps, even if people don't reply, at least you can watch your progress ya know?
Good luck, and I really like the look thus far!
small update for ya : ). I AM going to finish this one recon, you just wait and see! BAHAHA. THe other arm is going to have a bigger hand, maybe the hand of a creature thats obviously bigger thana human. does it seem unbalanced because of the size difference? I dont want it to looked jacked up, but i dont want it to look perfectly orderly either. Anyone have suggestions on other things i add to the body? THanks!

You said it in your original post... you're trying to construct this from parts "lying about"... so the changes you've made to make the arms different work very well.
DO make things different sizes... but don't go overboard.
The upper torso could have been one whole "spare part", so it won't bother me if its symmetry remains for the most part. Maybe add a couple "repair spots" where improvistional mechanics where used.
Do you have a sketch of where you're going with the whole structure?
recon
Heres the beginnings of his head, 2 days work so far. His neck will most likely be mechanical. The goggles arent finished yet, but pretty close. No textures as of yet.

Love what you have so far!
are you thinking about any sort of environment?
small update on the head, finished the back of it, gonna start on the neck now.
recon: i do have sketches of it, i just havent scanned anything in yet. I will try to remember to do that.
dmonk: thanks glad you like it, i do have an evironment planned...but its all in my head right now, nothing drawn out just yet.
Now that ive finished the head, im not sure if it suits the body anymore. I might remodel the body to fit it better but ill see when i finish the hands and everything.
UPDATE!
finished the neck :D

dude your robot is bad asssss!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have a problem of posting my gundam robot on my thread. ryancoop telling he doens't have a problem of posting big jpeg pic
but when i post mind. It gave me an error pic is too big max size is 50000 bytes when mind is only 800x600.
KingMob
10-15-2002, 02:25 AM
er, 50,000 bytes is 50 kb, meaning you could have a 1600x1200 image if it was only 50 kb...dimension vs file size, try compressing your image and you should be fine

thanks rye i finally figure it out check out on my new thread "update gundam robot"
started the hand today. Syomka's wires of his Anne model really heleped out a lot while doing this. I want the hand to have a lanky appearance. Its my first hand model and it is a BIG PAIN! I'll get through it though, and hopefully be done tomorrow. (Those rendered splines are just for reference)
finished the right hand :)

it looks really great, both color and model !!!:applause:
No unfortunately I dont have a website...maybe one day when I get around to it. :wip:
Sorry Maya4fun...but what do you mean by sympatic? I hope its something good! ;)
I put the hands in place and all that good stuff. Heres what I have so far, note that these are still not real textures I was just foolin around when I first started the model. Im not sure if I want to make both hands different, but I'm considering it. What do you think? Should the left one be bigger and more stubby to match the size of the arm? I might have time to work on it a bit this weekend and try some different hands out.

You should make the right hand stubbier and the left hand more long and elegant. Sort of like someone put his hands on the wrong side! That would be cool.
Looking good though, post more updates!

yep, once again it looks cool as all heck.
The hand looks to elegant to me, but I liek the idea of a stuby hand, and an elegant since you wanted patchwork.
Tho i think two stubby hands would look neat also.
Once I gfinish rigging my character I am going to just model a hand or two, cause I wish mine looked as nice as yours.
good work!
Recon: I'll get that sketch as soon as I get to a scanner, or I'll draw one in photoshop. But aside from a few minor changes, my concept sketch is basically what you see here, only posed. :)
nekohime: Thats a great idea. This guy is actually for a short film I'm (hopefully) working on right now. I don't have the whole story yet, but you gave me on idea. Now I want him to have those hands that you see but have one become damaged so has to find a hand somewhere and replace the damaged one. The one he finds could be really big so he would have to walk funny for the rest of the story :)
Kingmob: Been waiting for an update from ya on your monster! Two stubby hands would look neat, but I want him to almost have a freaky, sinister feel to his hands. Its hard to explain, but I have a lot in mind for this guy, just wait! :D (that could be awhile lol) I'm glad you like the hands, but I have to give credit to Syomka for the awesome wireframe images eh posted of his model, cause they helped a lot in getting it started.
I'm working on rigging this guy, but I've never rigged a character before so it could take awhile, wish me luck.
Thanks for all the comments everyone, they push me to keep going, so keep the c&c coming! :)

good luck riggin this guy, I myself have just done my first rig...it's hard work...but so cool to watch it unfold. When I finally got his leg to deform with his belly and not pinch I was sooo happy!
As for updates on big fat monster...soon my friend soon. TO much real world creeping in lately.
As for your guy I am loving it, even if you keep the long slender hands. I think they would look really cool and creepy when animated,(where could i find the wireframes for the hands you spoke of? I would really like to seem them!)
BTW the attachments for the arms are really neat looking...somehow I just noticed that they were different (don't ask long week hehe)
Great work as always.
sure heres the page with the wires link for ya

INTERESTING!
there is a BIG disproportion in the bosy. Try using the golden nomber!
recon
10-22-2002, 09:18 PM
Bosy... you mean Body, right? :)
I think it's pretty easy to make the leap that this is a robot and there is no need to follow any proportion guidelines!
(I wouldn't change a thing)

Great work so far Rye!
I really like your idea for the animation as well. If you stick with it and don't abandon this project, it can really come out great!
By the way - What program are you using? What did you render in? It looks like it uses global Illumination...
I can never get my models to as beautiful as you did here... And you say it's just something you slapped together until you work on the real textures... Looks great!

Hi,
very nice work, also texturing is pretty realistic.
I like it! :)
Looking for yours future post!
Regards Endre
Paul: Well im not sure where the disproportions are but it is a robot so I don't think it is limited to human proportions
recon:i dont plan on it :)
kingmob: hillarious
squeeze: I want to add more as well! But I jsut havent been motivated to. Besides I'm working on the challenge right now :D I'm sure I'll come back to this guy eventually.
zzzrByte: Thanks! I'm using max 5 with the default scanline renderer. I just have an array of lights with a few omnis for extra bounce then I run an action in photoshop to adjust the levels and such.
seabede: Thanks, I'm going to TRY to update it soon, but man those challenges are ADDICTING!
wow this thing is very cool... love the random parts (seeing as he is made when parts are found...) its so inspiring, ive only been back into 3d for a couple months and havnt ever tried characters but really wanna get into some robot modelling... any tips??? tutorials? running lightwave 7.5 so, ...
great work tho

I can see you have skills and this is coming along really cool. But back to the parts lying around thing....I think this robot is still too clean and symmetrical for me. Although it depends what type of enviro it has been constructed in...a clean, sterile enviro with lots of advanced technology or in, say , a junk collectors den full of outdated parts, scratches, dents, some rust etc. Add some liittle wires or fluid lines to show that its been more of a quick fix or 'jimmy ' rig in some areas/joints. Just somethings to keep in mind. The arm proportions from your earlier response I think are fine, but like someone said don't get too nuts with them. I think the arms, specifically the cuff/end area, are way too similar to each other in design/color. Change up the shape of one of the shoulder areas too. Are the robots goggles home made too? If they are you should make a different type of lens for each eye, maybe for different types of vision or readouts, projections etc. Cool WIP man, look forward to more....:)

Can I ask you... err, about somthing a bit off topic?
About Domo? Domo isn't YOUR creation is he?
Nope i sure wish i created Domo!
Thanks for the comments guys, and those are some good ideas Abominable. :) As far as color goes, done of those textures are real...I probably shouldnt have them on there really, I was just tired of looking at the grey model. I'll definitely put in some wiring next.
Cuse as for tips and tutorials...the way i went about learning was simply by doing tutorials that came with max, and getting tips from the people i work with. I've never used lightwave so I'm really not one to ask about that. I would do a tutorial, but really I am still pretty new to 3d and learning myself. IMO the best character modeling tutorial isJoan of Arc (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp) Keep at it, you'll get it for sure :)
hey thanks man... ill see what i can do, cant wait to see more of your works.

Hey, nice droid :)
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~barbie/Robot.jpg
Here's an unusually green and dark (for some bizzarre reason) version of a rusty old robot i did early last year for uni. As you can see, there's a LOT of newbie traits :) However, throughout the project i began to realise the most interesting thing was using old 'obsolete' equipment and styles. I wanted to give him a 'washing machine of the 1950s' look. I think you're heading in a different direction, but i thought i would suggest to you the idea. How cool would it be to see a robot built from old 1950s electrical equipment, like with an old black and white tv for the head or something! :) Well....i thought it would be cool
that is a cool idea. you should tackle it... i would but im far too busy, haha
...so let your kids run wild and free, cause like the old saying goes, let your kids run wild and free. :)

I will....one day... :)
"That's not a knife, THIS is a knife!". "That's a spoon." "Ahh, i see you've played knifey spoony before!"
haha :)
dont want to hijack the thread so ill just ask for any more updates on the droid? i love this thing... was working on a robot project on the weekend but i figure itll take a while cause i want quite a bit of detail, anyone know of good rust texture tutorials? :)
ok well i really should start working on this guy again huh? :surprised
mrfandiwagon: Thanks for the idea, it would make a really cool robot, but this guy is for a short film im wanting to do and it will have a certain look to it. I'm going to make some new concept sketches based on my model so i might start over but i doubt it. I'll probably try to just add more to it. Nice image btw

Oh, don't start over. That is a great looking model :)
thanks nervous
k heres a quick concept sketch of a new possibility for his right arm. Also added a few protruding objects to create some more randomness. Let me know what ya think :)
http://64.186.229.252/~ryana/art/droid/robotsketch.jpg
I like the style you've got going on there.
I'm wondering what you're going to do with the lower body? I know you mentioned that he's going to be walking on his hands but I think it would be cool and different if he had one big very rusty and clunky leg and a pair of crutches. The top half [so far] is nice and clean and elegant, I think it wouldbe good contrast to have heavy, rusty, old industrial parts the further down his body you go.
But whatever you do, just keep going with it.
Nice work

Pretty sweet all in all!
you know what would be good? a side kick :)
cause if you think about it, now so much has been altered apart from the actual face, that how could the droid start anything at all. well maybe over like, 10 thousand years :)
but you should have a tiny robot bird on mis-shaped wheels or something ... would make a good scene, just a thought.
(like the new sketch a lot)

what renderer are you using & how the hell do u make it look so good?!

01-31-2003, 12:45 PM
I like really much the render, and the texture ; so sweet for the eye !
Bliz: I really like the idea of him becoming more and more old and jimmy rigged the farther down you get, but I just feel as though having him walk on his hands will add that uniqueness needed for him in my story. I would write it down, but its still being formed in my head  one day it will be realized though! :D
coolmanmatt: Thanks : )
cuse: A sidekick would be great...but he is actually a sidekick of sorts lol. Still though thats good I hadnt thought of that, but I will come to that when i finish this one first lol!
Opeth: I'm using 3ds max scanline renderer with an array of lights. I send the render through an action I've set up in Photoshop. I have to give Fellah credit for it cause it was his tutorial that inspired me. Basically you just adjust the color balance to make it a little more yellow/red, then duplicate the layer, screen it, put it to about 35 percent opacity. Adjust the contrast on the screened layer then add a very small gausian blur. Thats about it. You just have to experiment with different things to get a style you like.
lapin: thank you, glad ya like it
Im working on the challenge now, so i dont know how much ill work on this, but i sure want to now, thanks a lot for the encouragement guys!:airguitar
