View Full Version : Master and Servant 2D Entry: Eliza Ivanova
eliza 04-10-2005, 08:51 PM Eliza Ivanova has entered the Master and Servant 2D.
Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7364)
Latest Update: Final Image: The Ultimate Master
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7364/7364_1116171327_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7364/7364_1116171327_large.jpg)
So this is it, completed!
I think the image is quite self-explanatory; however, I will gladly provide a small description of my concept:
From the first moment of its life, a baby becomes the one and only master in the house since it requires lots and lots of care, love, and of course responsibility. Nevertheless, many people, including my parents, told me that this had been the one time during which they loved being servants:) If I could, I’d like to say to that baby “stop looking that way, one day, you too will be a servant,” hehe.
Thank you all for the nice comments, crits and support! This was indeed a thrilling challenge:)

Lovely painting style! And I adore the colours you've used for the baby's skin *takes notes for future reference*... and that squished face! I LOVE IT! He looks soooo pissed off, lol!
Keep up the great work!

I like your idea so far. Very reflecting, how children seem to rule their parents. But this scene is very funny. and great
What I like the most, is the very speaking expression of the baby's face. Its so powerful.
feelings. and the skin tones and lightning are very thrilling.
btw, nice artworks you've made earlier. took a look at your site. i wish you the best for now

The color scheme looks awesome and the expression on his face is disturbing! I like it a lot. Good luck!
What can I say? It's fineart. I've seen a very few people with the skill you have. will keep an eye on this. Also I should mention that be baby actually is great, cause babies often look just like babies but you caught the natural look of an autocratic baby. N' that just kicks ass.
Oh, and colours are unusually radiant and realistic. well chosen even with the lightbounce from the surrounding surfaces.

very good work. i like the light on the face alot. you could make some sharp highlights in the hair to improve that. it mite b an idea to show the bulge of the pupils with a crisp highlight - that'd look ded good. good work!

I dig the colours on the kid. Nice use of two light sources. I don't really have a crit 'cause it's hard to say when it's still a WIP. Keep it up.

I really like the green shadows on the baby's face - sort of sickly and evil. Interested to see how you'll use colour on the servant.
I like how the eyes are dark and undefined - I think it adds to the character in a subtle but important way.
v. nice WIP.

My master's getting pretty feet:)
Since some people asked me about the idea of my picture, I will post my initial comment about it:
As we have probably noticed, from the first day of its birth, an infant becomes the one and only rule-maker for its parents. That is the concept I would like to develop in the picture displayed. Here is first version of my master, his servants will come soon one by one:)

04-13-2005, 05:26 AM
The concept is excellent. Indeed, newborns inslave their parents! HAHA! I really like the light values you've established on this latest update. I'm not sure how you managed it, but though his proportions seem perfectly baby-like, the kid almost seems like a grumpy adult. I guess it's true how they say all babies look like Churchill! Good luck. I love where this is going.

looking great eliza...been watching this piece...can't wait for the rest.
p.s. the details are looking excellent(the wristlace, nice touch :D )
eliza
04-13-2005, 04:33 PM
thanks again people:)
W!L, i just noticed your question- yes, i use ref for the right proportions but the colors are mine
indeed i cant wait to see a more tighten up version of this piece great work.
Looking at the baby, I must say, it's very well constructed. You know what you need to do so i don't need to tell you cause i know you know already.
The cloth looks stunning, which is unsurprising having seen your previous work with cloth. I think you've handled the primary (from the right) and secondary (from left) lighting very well, you may wanna do a few touchups but it looks very great, almost photographic.
I'm really quite amazed at the baby's hair, so soft and authentic hehe :D
Overall, good composition, you have an eye for that, which is great. Don't forget to use some lens effect for the so-valuable realism.
glee.

grumpy adult. I guess it's true how they say all babies look like Churchill!
we will poop on the beaches!
Nice stuff mate... as you use refernce i gusee the baby is right, but the body looks a bit too long, and ugly too be frak... maybe the refernce was an ugly baby (i hope it not yours.. quick run wil run!)
Maybe you want it too be ugly? I love the face though,, but the body jkust does not sit well with me. just too big i think
arkinet
04-13-2005, 04:52 PM
you got that freakish innocent-wicked expression on the babys face, reall cool. the lights & colors impressive.
eliza
04-13-2005, 04:55 PM
well, it'd have been really cool if i could photo a baby of my own but it'd be really bizarre to be a 17-year-old mom, so i'm bound to use ugly pictures for ref >_< n yes, as i look at the photo, there's really something wrong with that baby (maybe that's why i picked it up for my drawing, haha) i may shrink my master a bit, i dunno, i'll decide later

Hi Eliza,
I really like the modelling of the babys hand - really subtle tonal changes. Do you paint tonally then introduce colour after, or do it all at once?
eliza
04-13-2005, 05:14 PM
gratitude W!L! n you know what, with smaller body it definitely looks babier ;)
 friend for the advice
Magnemar, hey to you too.. i basically do the overall coloring, really rough, just to get the basics you know. then comes the shadowing, many corrections at that point follow, n then the sacred details:)

i just6 love your style.... this is so good.. would be perfect if it wasnt for the baby... i have a big problem with it... i kow it should look mencing but it still looks wrong to me anotomically. i think the arms are not chubby ebough, the hands are slightly too small. the ehad is to small and i gues sthat is it... sorry. it just really strikes out at me. the mother is perfect though as well as composition

Wow, great entry. I love the way you are putting your color in. You can really give volume to what you do. I'm sorry if this is obvious or already stated, but what program are you using? I think the background (couch/pillows...) is a little distracting. There are so many shapes... however, great piece all in all.
Good luck!

Nice work Eliza.
Really like how it's coming along. I really like the baby - there is someting really wizened about it - it kind of looks like it's planning worldwide domination in it's head.... :)
The whole thing feels very green heavy at the moment but maybe that's how you want it to be....?
Keep going, I need to keep getting inspired... :)

birdybear, photoshop 8 :buttrock:
Magnemar yea, it is supposed to be dark for several reasons: i want to achieve that unique belleville mood, if you've watched the animation, and my interpretation of the challenge's topic suggests that feeling.
GhostInTheMachine, theheh, first of all, thank you for the kind comment and no, that's not me, that is him (http://eliza.my.contact.bg/feast.htm):)

OMG... 17.... Right... I 'm off to a small dark corner to shrivell up and die! miles ahead of so many of us in the most amazingly self styled way:cry: Grrumble Grumble!
lol... Can't say enough about this... it all works Soooooo well!... The baby's face is pure art... nothing else to it.. and even the mother has it goin on!!... The style reminds me of certain 2000AD artists who had a tendency to colour their character's faces in a manner which hinted toward alchohol abuse lol.... IT WORKS IT WORKS... IT'S ALIVE!!!... calm down James:surprised...
I couldn't ask for more from this entry... it's like cake.. with extra cream:D
Keep it up!!

Hi Liz. :) It looks nice up top know. I'm a little bit disturbed about those green reflex on the
baby's skin. It makes her look some kind like metal. I know that the environment around the
baby is green but if you don't make something to warm the colors of the skin the baby might
be death very soon. Otherwise your composition is strong as always. I know that you have to
put more elements in the picture, maybe that might be a father of this pure, little, pampered
and always wanting something baby!!! You've got excellent sense of color and if there is some
problem I know that you'll eliminate the problem immediately. My last word: Good work. I'll stay
tuned for updates.
Cheers

17.... *cough choke die* My god, you are amazing. 17! *blink*
Ahem, sorry, it's just that I've never such amazing skill in one so young! You are going to be HUGE if you make a living from your art. Which you most certainly should. I LOVE the expressions on their faces. You've managed to make the baby look so grumpy and demanding and blank to the distress on the face of the mother it's amazing, he really does look like a little terror. And by way of counterpoint, the mother's half-happy, half-distressed look, complete with those circles under her eyes is spot on too, something every mother can no doubt relate to. I really like your colour choices, the fact the green adds an almost sickly over tone adds to the sombre mood of the whole piece. Great, great stuff.
And 17.... woooow. We really need a worship icon...

hi. sorry for the dumb comment before. i didnt remember writing that. maybe you shoudl put your own pic there, then you wouldnt scare big kids like me! :D
very nice site btw.
im with others on simplifying the background - i can see the cushions are a play on the comfort (lack of) but its abit too busy. the red eyes of the mom could be made a little redder, so its more obvious that she's been crying - maybe a tissue stuffed into her sleeve. she looks suitable drained though, you've done really well there.
i had an idea that the baby could be close to a wall or in the corner of a room, not actually facing a wall but close enough for it to be odd behavior.
i really like that oddly compassionate or empathetic teddy, it looks almost as if its touching the baby's arm. im sure this is intentional and i think its genius. :)

great piece of work,u have the picture conveyed the story pretty well.some interesting use of colors too, just that i think maybe its alil too much green on the left portion of the baby.or perhaps the mother would have some same value of green of the baby on part of her as well.
i love the expression for the mother and the baby has this nasty kinda look, which i kinda like it:D good luck mate.an impressive entry indeed:thumbsup:

jugeras, Velinov, thank you too guys for replying!
much appreciated
Slav, yes, i changed the overall concept some time before entering the contest, though you can still see my initial approach towards that interpretation of topic in one of sketches ive provided. was that what you were asking about or something else? i hope i understood you right
Zepyhri, bulls eye! that is Exactly what i tried to achieve as expressions and youve formulated it so precisely im simply amazed! and thank you so much for the other remarks too, hehe
GhostInTheMachine, i didnt find your comments dumb at all; on the contrary, it felt really awesome that you were interested not only in my contest entry but in some minor details such as an avatar:) and the thing about the teddy...since you revealed my secret (:D ) yea, it is put there with a purpose, and i hope the idea'd be more visible what i finally start to complete the piece...though you got it already i think, no?
ms@sx, thats exactly what my next update will be about - light and its reflections:) there is still so much to complete i cannot even imagine;however, thank you for making a remark on that,im glad you see the steps of what is needed to be improved my way!

what can i say... very impressive! your a true photoshop jedi, lady. (i dunno where that came from). however the emphasis is now a little diluted and it'd take more consideration to understand. it is subtle, but maybe too subtle?
as soon as you make the father look desperate this image will become very strong. the background still needs work. the father side' wall looks good but the cushions are still overwhelming and the wall behind the mother looks fudged - im sure its not finished. maybe you can consider simpler shapes for the whole background. hope that wasnt too critical!
your doing really well! it'l b emotive. :D
btw - i can't get used to that face (avatar). i still think *wuuu!* :argh: every time i see it.

i think i understand this a little better now, its not so literal as a 'demon baby', is it? this is about looking at a relationship and understanding a dynamic. gee i could make myself look thick here :) ...thats why the scene isnt too strange, its got odd lighting just because you (the viewer) are looking on it in that 'light'. ther fact the mothers (and fathers) eyes are just the same lead me to that.
... ok im not all that bright, thats obvious isnt it? :D
...ill go back to my cad drawings now :)

04-30-2005, 07:29 AM
arkinet, W!L, thank you guys for the comments! that similarity you found was not intentional, i can assure you. i did not use myself as a reference for the mother, i used my own mom actually. i guess that is where the resemblance comes from, even though the parents' expressions are made up by me:)

04-30-2005, 02:48 PM
Really nice work so far, Eliza. The lighting is terrific. I like the addition of the father and especially his expression. It's hard to read quite what's in his hand... maybe if it didn't overlap so much with the teddy bear and other background elements, it'd be easier to see. And one other note: The parents don't seem to be pushing any weight down on the bed itself. Normally, one would expect some sort of indentation and wrinkles in the bedspread under the pressure of his elbows and her knees... There's hints of that here, but more might give a better impression of weight, as their entire weight is being places on their elbows/knees.
Anyhow, plenty of time.... Good luck with it!

HaHaHa, I adore the simplicity of this concept! I like how you made the parents 'give up' their master bed to the baby. I think the baby could look more assertive and authoritative simply by holding the spectre that was beside him/her like a king/queen or wearing the crown. But that is not neccessary.
I think you can enhance the mood by making the centre a bit more colourful by adding a few other colours like red (strawberries, cherry, red cake, red lollipop and the like) so that the master (baby) becomes a stronger point of interest whilst the rest of the picture like the servants (parents) stay muted.
keep up the great work, eliza!
GhostInTheMachine
04-30-2005, 07:58 PM
i like it. very nice detailing.
l think it could benefit from a lamp+table on the fathers side of the bed. it doesnt have to explain the light too literally but give alittle more feature to the room. it feels very empty, like your in a spare room thats just been cleared out, or something. also the mothers right arm needs work. add the depressions inthe bed as well, that was a good suggestion. i think you can afford to experiment now, since the basis of everything is down already. throw in a few of you subtle concepts to enhance the image. very skillful. well done :D
eliza
05-03-2005, 07:36 AM
walrus, thanks man, you poited out the places of the drawing which i am currently working on (especially the bed, its kinda tough.) good luck with your entry
jeromoo, hehe, thank you for the words "I adore the simplicity of this concept!", that was what i really tried to achieve..in the beginning, the baby was indeed holding the sceptre but it was way to literal, so i decided the infant only to look at that object no matter that the parents offer it a bunch of other goodies:)
GhostInTheMachine, yesss, its experiment time, thank god, i was really worried i would not have enough time to complete the overall concept.. what happened with your autoportrait? i liked it:)

im just taking a second look eliza, and this is looking superb. its really well balanced now, its doesn't look like it needs any more. not to say you cant add to it, ofcourse. maybe you could very gently texture the mothers top. i still think you should break up the light a little on the fathers head, like with just a few hairs, or something.
just had an idea, dont know if its good tho - more subtle than the scepter and crown would be scattered chess pieces (im sure you get the idea). is that too subtle? they would look great on the bed.
well done, again. :D

yup, I'm quite ready with the overall final look of the image. Of course, I still have lots of work to do esp. on the bed and background.. but I get a bit too tired working with that huge one-layer drawing (1 layer cuz with more the computer gets stuck:)
the wicky, thank you darling for the kind words, I'm glad you find the mom's face amusing!
Fiolka Alexandre, hehe, yes, the image turned out to be quite different from the initial skeches, doodles, etc. thanks for visiting me again;)

As a first time dad...two weeks in... and 'enjoying' a few sleepless nights... i think this is great.
I commented much earlier on the technique on the baby, and it works great across the whole image. A really clever interpretation of the theme. Cool stuff.

Its stunning eliza...i said it before but i cant praise you enough ... i just love your style and this is very, very cool ! :applause::applause: :D

I cant stop laughing everytime I look at this one! That baby's face is so funny! Like he's evil and demanding, which is what makes it obvious he's the master ofcourse. But wow, one of my favorite concepts in the whole contest. I really like this. Plus I learned alittle from your technique! Best of luck!

Nice expressions on all 3 faces.
Overall it is very artistic and conveys the emotional servitude of parents!
Technically, the only thing I would say is that some of the shadows don't seem to go with the light sources. But who knows! It's pretty much perfect nevermind, lol.
