So here's this Cartoon monster type guy I made. I have a bunch of sketches but no scanner :( Once i do I will post them. I am thinking of using him for a short animation test. If you want to hear more of the concept I will post later...long day of work today and I would love to get some feedback, rip her up as it was.

Gonna work on the body some more after I eat some diner.

Not textures, as you can see, but I do want to make him blue.

The main purpose of this is to make somethign that would be fun to aniamte, becasue i have little experience on that end of it.

lemme know whatcha think!

and here is the wire

I see no crits needed here, unless you're going for a realistic image, your monster works. Try adding some textures. perhaps some fur on the ears and around the face. Maybe a horn or 2. But its a nice clean model.

LordEzzat
10-01-2002, 06:18 AM
looks pretty awesome would love to see the full body when its done ...as for fur I think he could go for more of a chinese beard really long like in the old martial art movies....could be a good monsters inc dude ...keep updates posted ok:thumbsup: :buttrock:

KingMob

ah an ever lovin update.

Started on the body today, but did not get much done really.

Still very flat and such, but It gives a view of how I see him looking body wise.

I started on the hands to, but they looked bad, my mind is on other stuff now, so i am gonna go. (it's my birthday woohoo) peeps keep calling me and telling me to go drink with them, so who am I to say no heh.

Anyways I wil keep the updates comin as I go. If anyone wants to see the wire just ask, and ye shall um you know the rest.

Peace out homeys!

KingMob
10-05-2002, 03:04 AM
Finally got me some updates woohoo. altho it is friday at 11 and I haven't eaten since ten in the morning hah. oh well. At least the model is almost done.

I Can't decide if i should make his toe/finger nails modeled or just texstured, for now i think texture will work.

I like the idea of the stubby tail more than how I have it now, so I will most likely rework that bunch.

umm obviously not textured yet but soon! I have not ever textured a full model like this, so I am nervous heh.

Tell me what you think looks horrid, and how you would fix it if you can heh.

thanks!

and the side

KingMob
10-05-2002, 03:07 AM
and the back or 3/4...sweet lord I am hungry

Oh yeah should he have clothes? I think I like him naked. umm...that sounds dirty

KingMob
10-05-2002, 03:08 AM
and a close up of the hand and of the foot.

Now these i have really clean and simple, (and i still need to rework them a bit.

But what do yo think, I don't want to stray to far fromt he cartoon style of him, and he is already veering from my original design, which is good.

I guess do you think these are way to simple, do they need more?

piajartist
10-06-2002, 05:16 AM
Pretty basic, and not very scary, work on the face. Too smooth

KingMob
10-06-2002, 05:31 PM
well, I am not really going for scary, I was actually thinking of making the face less mean. Kinda going for bumbling, like he could look mean...Also going for cartoony, so less detail is kinda the point. Hoping to do most subtle stuff with textures ya know?

Oh well. Since I am not getting much response here I might just write this guy off as a failure and start another. I don't want to put much work in on him if he's not being well recieved.

thanks for the response anyways, from everyone, I really appreciate the help.

10-06-2002, 05:54 PM
great man

all i could think of is tone down on the ass, to big

other wise its uberlicous

also monsters arent supposed to be kind:shame:

still good though:buttrock:

KingMob
10-06-2002, 05:59 PM
yeah, he is not supposed to be kind...just kind of a screw up.

I agree the ass sux0rz (for those who do not speak hacker that means sucks, heheh)

thanks for the comment!

Can't decide if I should rework him a bunch or not. I started drawing out some scenes I would like to use him in, so maybe I will. hell screw It I am gonna finish him, and if he sucks, oh well right?

anyways, I will keep updating as I go, feel free to dig into him all ya want, it will help me get better.

rason
10-06-2002, 06:04 PM
i think its a good thing you got going here

just fix the ass

for some reason the arms are appealing to me

anyway keep it up:applause:

KingMob
10-06-2002, 06:07 PM
hah, alright The ass I will fix! I can tell thats his worst part.

How about the hands. I think i am gonna give him bigger hands, like an ape or something ya know?

rason
10-06-2002, 06:45 PM
yeah big hands sounds awsome

you should also try skiny thighs but big calvs to see how that looks with the big hands

KingMob
10-07-2002, 11:23 PM
woohoo almost done with him!

I am really afraid to texture him, so any advice would be great. I actually want him to look very close to how he is now, but with a little more detail...I am really new to textures.

I gave him a tongue, which when I rig will be a lot of fun to animate I think...I picture this guy like a dog. dumb, loyal and easily confused.

anyways heres the pics. I redid a lot from the last time, and toned down the butt hehe. tho he is still a big butt.

KingMob
10-07-2002, 11:25 PM
and the back, as you will see I got rid of the tail idea.

KingMob
10-07-2002, 11:27 PM
and the side, tho this shot sucks, oh well

KingMob
10-07-2002, 11:28 PM
ready for my close up mr. deville!

KingMob
10-07-2002, 11:58 PM
Ok so what do you guys think, simple shading like it has now, or some more complex stuff? I am really looking forward to animating him, is it bad to animate, before texture?

I like the black eyes he has now, but do you think he would look better with traditional eyes?

any advice would be great, also any crits would be very helpfull!

jscheel
10-08-2002, 01:08 AM
I like the design.

The eye's are great as a solid black, but you could try suggesting pupils by placing an almost-black area in the center of each eye. Just enough for the viewer to identify with the ball as an eye, but not so much that you have a grey dot in the center of each.

Simple or complex? Go with your instinct. If this is a test i animation, I wouldn't go with fur. If you really want to improve your texturing abilities, go all out.

BTW, are you planning on having his stomache jiggle while he walks? I hope you are. airguitar

KingMob
10-08-2002, 01:12 AM
oh, the stomach jiggle is the part I am looking forward to the most. Mainly I wanted to make afat guy...heh. Cause jigglin' is funny.

Good idea about the "pupil" type of thing, I will definetly do that, so he can look at things at least.

I think I will texture him, just as practice because I am very weak in that area. i just played around with rigging his tongue, and that was fun...but I don't want to get to carried away.

jscheel
10-08-2002, 02:43 AM
Are you going to use a spline ik chain for the tounge?

KingMob
10-08-2002, 02:47 AM
I am actually trying to decide.. I may want him to "roll" his tongue, in which I will have to use sort ov a "v" setup on it... I would like to us the tongue a whole bunch, cause I like how it looks heh.

I actually need to read up on a lot of IK stuff, I never actually got this far before, I have done some simple tests, but I really want to do my best on this. Make it really fun if possible and learn a lot.

Actually any links to good animation or texturing threads/sites would be most appreciated!

thanks for the reply

This is all I have for now. I've got a bunch stored away, but I have to finish a paper.

KingMob
10-08-2002, 04:01 PM
thanks for the links man, i have seen some of them before, but this pdf looks good!

also I reworked the hand a bit, heres a close up...it's simple but I thinks it's as detailed as I need it...let me know if you think it is to plain...gonna start working on the textures now...hold me I am scared!

jscheel
10-08-2002, 04:59 PM
The hand is great.
Are you going to texture his knuckles? you could get a pretty nice stretch of the skin folds in the knuckle that way. I'll send more links when I can. My paper is due in less than two hours, and I have a huge test to study for on thursday.

KingMob
10-08-2002, 05:08 PM
heh, man what are you doing surfing cg talk when you have a paper due!!?? and a test!!!??

a man after my own heart...why do now what you could do later.

Yeah I think I will add some light wrinkles and what not to his hands and stuff, I also want some stretch marks on his belly, and some slight wrinkles to his face. Maybe some spots.

Also thinking of getting fancy and adding some fur to his forarms/hands, I made a maquette back in school of a much meaner lookin critter, but I liked the way it looked. Of course I have never used fur before, but why should that stop me?muhaahaha.

I probably won't have many updates today, I have to start the design for two sites due a the end of the month, and go to kung fu. but who knows...

yeah please send more tuts when you finish your important stuff, I really appreciate it. Good luck on the test!

10-08-2002, 05:22 PM
Hey buddy, I think you should work on the small creases near the thigh and hip area. Also the elbow, there might be a bit too sucked in where he would put a herion needle.HEHE.......keep working on him.

KingMob
10-08-2002, 05:26 PM
hah, now THAT's my animation, the big goofy heroin addicted monster hahah.

True that does look a bit cracked out doesnt it? hadn't tnoticed before.. will fix that for sure!

as for the creases, I may just remodel that whole section...it is kinda slopyp and since you mentioned it I agree it looks wrong.

Thanks for the help

10-10-2002, 07:03 PM
heya!!! sorry i didn't see this thread b4.

The cah is lookin REALLY cool. it's VERY promissing.
I especially like the lower teeth, the way they are pushed together. :D

KICK ASS!!!

KingMob
10-10-2002, 07:17 PM
hey thanks for the comments.

I should have a new update VERY soon.

As soon as I understand texturing...kinda struggling with it now. I'll post some more stuff tonight. I want him to be cartoony, but not TO cartoony. so I am having trouble finding a good mix.

I actually totally redid the creases near the butt and legs, updated his hands and did a few more little tweaks, so I think the model is looking a lot nicer now.

Heh I like the teeth to. Should I up the mesh and make it more complicated on the teeth? or keep em simple as theya re with a little texture on them? I can't decide yet.

lcd15000
10-11-2002, 07:19 AM
have you thought of a clay type texture instead of cartoon

just a thought

model looks really great keep up the work
:buttrock:

KingMob
10-11-2002, 03:07 PM
clay might be cool. But since I am so new to this (texturing) I wouldn't know where to begin..actually how could I do that?

I like the idea a lot. at very least for a test. I should have a bunch o' updates tonight!

KingMob
10-12-2002, 12:17 AM
small update,

I took almost a day to read up on UV mapping and messing around untill I got the maps to work..Finally I have it to a pouint where it is not HORRIBLY blurry. But if anyone could help my make it less blurry I would be forever in debted to them.

The map itself is not nearly so blurry.

thanks!

on a final note, THis is just color, no bump or anything, that is next... but I still want to do more with colro, but not to much cause I want a loose feeling...my next thing will be more realistic.

Blackassheep
10-12-2002, 04:31 AM
there we go, getting some textures coming along...cool.Maybe add some bump to him like some vains or moles...

[msf]
10-12-2002, 12:59 PM
he would look good in a hunched over position.

KingMob
10-13-2002, 05:09 PM
hey thanks for the comments!

yeah I plan on bumping him. I want some grooves in his lip area, and some pores (not much) and a little bump on his moles...veins might be cool to! I will give it a go and post the results.

As for hunched over, Yeah If I had a working scanner I would scan in some of the concept scenes for him. I basically think the one I like the most would be him hunched over ona hill near a tree, looking off into a valley...but I don't know if I am good enough for such a scene to look good, so i may just do some anim tests.

Thanks again for replying, I should have more updates tonight.

KingMob
10-13-2002, 08:30 PM
ANd an update...wow A bump map..Ok this is the best texture I have ever made...and that's not saying much:shrug:

BUT i am actually happy with it so far...I think he's comin along nicely, but I bet you guys could make him even better.

Just thought I would throw this up and see what you thought I could do so far to make it better...cause that is the goal!

thanks again.

dmonk
10-13-2002, 09:16 PM
great updates.

The texturing is coming along. Maybe and a bit more bumps and maybe veins, not too much though. Someone might have already suggested this though.

 Keep it up

KingMob
10-13-2002, 10:20 PM
yeah I am gonna add some more stuff...thinking about stripes on the back.

But now I am bored of texturing..well not bored, just REALLY want to pose him... I think I will elave him as this, untill later...or is that a bad idea?

KingMob
10-13-2002, 11:56 PM

hey, I am setting up the face right now with bones...maybe some morph targets? i dunno can I use both hehe...

I am using bones and have a locator with set driven for the phenomes, and then the blinks . seems ok, any reason NOT to do this?

any tips or comments would be appreciated.

10-15-2002, 06:18 PM
ok, I gotta go north for the rest of the week, and am to lazy and won't have time to work on him, since I would have to haull all my equipment...oh well.

I got the basic rig done, now I need to figure out how to do blendshapes for mouth and eyes without killing my computer hehe..

should be fun!

if anyone has ANY suggestion I would love to hear them.

also if it helps, I am using sub-d binded to poly proxy...will blend shapes work?

thanks for all the help!

DrAdamDinosaur
10-27-2002, 08:50 AM
Are you still looking for tips on blend shaping or facial setup? The way I usually do it is to have a bone controlling the jaw upenning and closing and then create blend shapes on a per-vertex level so only the parts you want deforming will deform.

Very cool character and its been very interesting watching its progression. I have picked up a few things I didn't know before. Thanks.

KingMob
10-28-2002, 12:29 AM
Hey yeah, ALWAYS lookin for tips man hehe.

Yeah I wish I would have used bone setup for the jaw, but oh well I am just doing blend shapes now.

Actually this thread here

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=25465&goto=newpost

saved my life! I set up the poly proxy and sub d layer, binded them (or is that bound hehe) and weigthed/ik'd the whole guy...

then I tried to do blendshapes...BIG mistkae. Sort of. THat thread shows a workaround if you end up doing that, which so far is working great.

I just need to figure out how to use set driven witht he jaw parts for certain facial shapes.

anyways BIG update soon. ALmost fully boned and weighted and facial shapes are almost done. SO I will post an update showing how those look at least hehe. Hoping to start animating soon (tomorrow maybe) and should post at least a playblast for you guys to laugh at.

thanks for the reply, and sorry for such delay, I had to leave town for a week hehe.

10-29-2002, 03:59 AM
Okay.. that post that had his teeth and eyeballs floating on the rig in space... maybe it's just that I haven't had much to eat yet today myself, but if I HAD been eating when I saw that, half of it would've gotten spewed on my monitor.

KingMob
10-29-2002, 03:16 PM
yeah I think that's my favorite update...he looks like a hermit crab or something.

Glad you didn't spit up on your monitor, cleaning that up would not have been fun.

Also I need a name for this guy.

Something like "Jum Jum"

Me and a friend were thinking about "Jum Jum Cloudhammer"

cause it sounds so silly, I kind of liked it. anythoughts?

KingMob
11-05-2002, 08:50 PM
oh wow an update...and I bet you all thought I quit.. HA

Actualyl i am totally redoing his rig, and uv map with what I learned lately.

Tell me what you think. I know of a few problems, but please tell me what you think sucks or is good and I will try to fix it, or keep it.

The color map is almost done, and the bump is just begining.

LordEzzat
11-16-2002, 12:53 AM
Man hes looking great from the last time i saw him u using maya?
i too am a mouse man just no money..textures look fairly good very simple for the character and i think it suites him...i kinda agree about maybe smuging or fading the darker protions of the textures out or even have them fading into tiny dots to fade them out...looks grat though very simple and effective ... How about the Name jube jube like the candy...not sure how you spell it but he looks like a monster that would walk around eating jube jubes..very monster inkish ,and very cool if you get around to animating him and need some ideas let me know ,I'm not an animator mainly a modelier but a good artist and conceptual thinker....Other wise Rock On He Looks Great!!!!!!!!!!!

Merlin
11-16-2002, 06:36 AM
Hey it's looking good! not sure if anybody's told you this yet or not, but a quick way to set upa bump map, is to take a copy of your entire color map, desaturate it to take all the color out. then adjust the Levels, bringing the dark end point and the white end point closer toward the middle, upping the contrast. Then, you can choose to have a hi-definition bump map, or blur it out for more subtlety. Also, see Leigh's Texturing for dummies thread in the Texturing thread, it's using Lightwave, but the principles are the same for just about every app.

Merlin

KingMob
11-18-2002, 03:22 PM
hey thanks for all the tips and comments.

Glitchwolf: Umm he's supposed to be nice...but with a tinge of mean. Actually sort of bumbling.

Laker: Yeah you better get him to help me out...hey waitasec :surprised

Merlin : Thanks for the tips on the bump map, I will re-read that tutorial. And try your desaturate idea, that makes sense. I was just getting really harsh bumping before, when I just desaturated, i need to make the whole thing more 'medium' values.

Lord Ezzat: Thanks man. I like JumJum for his name, it's fun to say. But that doe snot mean he can't eat jubejubes.

I should have an update once I move and get resituated, I added a lot of little details, like nipples, ear hair and a better lookin' butt. Maybe i will post that before I leave

thanks again!

Ooh ooh! I like the spots, and the ear-hair is great! Something about the shininess of his skin still isn't right though... still looks too plastic, but I guess you've got a ways to go yet with the texturing.

Dude I love the Hair coming out of his ears rofl, looks absolutly sweet very cool looking you gonna animate him a little at all? The only thing i dont like right now is the bright white toenails, think they sould be more yellowish or darker..IMO...but looks great..

Hey nice work... especially the ear hair.

And like what Ezzat said, the toenails are a bit bright, try toning them down a little.

I want to some animations now!

Really nice monster. You should be a proud father.
Heres a name, how about 'Blurrb'.
His chin looks abit Bobafetish to me. Maybe a distant relative.

hey king,
just noticed this thread on your signiture
its a great character. i love his neck/chin.
he has a great style going on and the latest texture really adds something to him
i can imagine his friends: you should model a collection of creatures like him (all different colours, shapes and sizes but similar tones) and make a short.
he really is great stuff.
marvelous
