View Full Version : Half-Life 2 expansion pack announced
Stillwell 04-08-2005, 11:13 PM After weeks of simmering speculation, the latest edition of PC Gamer UK has unveiled Aftermath, the expansion pack to Half-Life 2, said to feature Alyx and Dog in a more high-profile role, slated for release this summer, and under development by Valve.
...
Aftermath will take place after the events in Half-Life 2, as the citadel you crippled will launch into space, and you and Alyx will escape from City 17. Without the barriers put up by the alien invaders, creatures previously unable to enter will be able to roam freely, making your escape that much more difficult.

That's great news! Although I'm sure all the fans are just going to LOVE doing the whole Steam download/authorize process again...

Look, whether fans liked it or hated it, it's the RIGHT thing to do. You support the developers, not the publishers.

I agree with Lunatique.
Besides, I found Steam to be a godsend. I recently replaced my harddrive and was in the middle of playing HL2. I re-installed HL onto the new drive and it dawned on me that I didn't save or back up my saved games! I conceded to that fact and figured I'd play from the beginning again anyway. But when Steam came up and I entered my log-in info, HL started up and amazingly all my saved games were still there! I hadn't realized that game progress is stored on the server. So for that alone Steam is a great idea and service.
Can't wait for the expansion pack although I'm still battling thru HL2...

Agreed.
This expansion pack is great news...that was much faster than I thought it would be.

They'd better release Day of Defeat: Source before this expansion pack or I'm going to be demanding my money back. Not too thrilled to have payed for a product which has still not been delivered and now they're already talking about other products and not mentioning DoD:Source. I imagine they'll have a lot of ticked off people if they don't get on the ball with what customers have already paid for.
That being said, hopefully this expansion will help resolve the terrible ending of HL2.

What ending? You didn't even have a decent boss fight :D
Don't get me wrong, I loved every single moment of the game except the lack of a boss fight. Even the open ending made me smile :)
By the way, there's an interesting article over here:

But don't you think having a boss fight at the end of every single game is very formulistic and predictable?

Yes, of course, but because of the lack of a boss fight I didn't know the end was near, and the credits at the game was like a brick thrown in my face.
I'm sure you also wanted more Half-Life 2 ;)

A boss fight may be formulaic(sp?), but it's a great way to give one a sense of closure/resolution when things are done. Better to go out with a bang, in my opinion.

Well some of us don't have an active internet connection on our HL2 computers....so it's a bit annoying having to rewire phone lines in our house just so Steam can tell me that I DID buy the game I just purchased.
Then again, after all the work they put into the game, I guess I can go through a little inconvenience for them ;)
Anyways...yes...I, as well, was disappointed with the no-boss situation.
In half life 1 it was sweet cause you had that big spider thing (which I thought was the main boss when I got there) and ALSO that big fetus-baby thing....there wasn't really anything in HL2 creature-wise when it comes to a boss....but I must admit that the climax was extremely engaging anyways....
I'm mostly looking forward to all of the new creatures now that the combine's walls have been breached :)....

It seems like a bad idea for Valve to say the expansion pack will come out this summer given how the HL2 release date slipped.

Wait?! There was a ending? All I saw was a hl3 commercial, well I guess it was a hl2 expansion pack commercial now.

I was surprised at the HL2 ending (what, that's it??) - but mostly because I could have played another 30 hours. I loved that game. I think a Boss fight wouldn't have been in the spirit of it - too contrived (Doom 3 anybody).
It was a kind of mini-boss fight w/ the 2 gunships.

I didn't mind the ending, what made it worth while was the surprise of the gravity gun alteration. That was sweet. I had to go into god mode on HL1 to beat that fetus thing.
I support the developers all the way.
