Hi, starting out with a simple sketch just to get the idea on paper, the composition will probably change with time, like size and all that. I´ve been inspired by some books that teach out sword techniques.
The idea is about a bunch of Zen-Warriors that fight each other. Right now I dont know if there should be a master teaching some apprentice a bujutsu teknik or a sword master dishing out som serious blows ending up in casualties. But I think one thing is certain, that the grand master, the allseeing zen guy is watching them all...Buddha.

Nice, when I first saw this I thought you'd planned a comic-page style image, which is a great format for showing the sword techniques (the rituals/disciplines of which & their place in japanese society could themselves be a master/servant relationship). But as a series of thumbnail sketches, I think the last is the most dynamic & three dimensional.

Maybe you could do a single image (the last thumbnail seems like a good basis for it) with the soldier defending something at the base of a huge statue, as if he's honour-bound to protect it.

I don't think you should skip all the images but rather focus on the last one. render that one completly and have the others blend into the image in a more dynamic way.

WHAAA? Why haven't I seen THIS before?!! This is AMAAAAZING! I guess my only excuse is there are just way too many talented artists in this challenge (yup, that's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it :D )
Love the drawings and concept art and I really like the textured look you have goin' on there (almost like an old bit of scroll, or something). I'm diggin' the whole samurai theme too... bushido (way of the warrior) is a part of the lives of many aspiring martial artists out there... me included!
Keep up the great work, and I'll check back for your updates!
Cheers!

hey buddy, thats some real AMAZING drawings in there......but i find some mistakes in the concept...cuz you have drawn budda and many warriors, but budda is err "lord of peace?"

Ok, first of all, I have not been practising Buddhism or studying religion in any special way so I can't say whats exactly right or wrong.
This painting was my version of 3 samurais practising bujutsu techniques and they are followers of Zen Buddhism. Buddha is the their Master and they are servants of a religion or a way of belief. And you can also say that the one who stands as the champion at the end of the battle is the master and the others are servants or foe of some sort. But still followers of Zen.
Buddha may be the "lord of peace?" (armorofgod, quote) but I think its wrong to say that drawing warriors and Buddha is a mistake. It is claimed that Zen was the foundation of the martial arts in the feudal Japan. Providing all the elements of philsophy and theory to create a strong characer and personality for instance in bujutsu. Zen was a key element to develope a man that was constantly exposed to danger both on and off the battlefield. The Japanese culture was dominated by warriors and the militant forms of Zen with its disciplines and techniques, and then we bump into some really heavy stuff, the breathing which is one of the bigger parts of Buddhism, to prepare, clear, have insight, bla bla and all the things that comes alonge with that. I can go on and on but in very short terms, if u were practising Zen Buddhism to the core as a fighting man of feudal Japan u should be able to explode into full action with a devasteting force and have a superior control of all the weapons and techniques to send your opponent to place where he will bother u no more.
It is probably a zillion people that spinn there heads of after this fuzzy explanation about
Zen Buddism. I will be pleased if some with the right skills would help me clear this
subject out
Check this out if u want to know more about Buddhism and martial arts.

adding a texture/pattern made inte Illustrator in the backgrund. And a Color layer to make the picture not so much sepia, but I still like it to be quite neutral, almost like an old japanese painting or something in that direction.

Hey, no pirate talk, that's my preserve :D
I really like your colors and technique, it looks rather aged and I like it! You handled the monochromatic look very well, that's difficult to pull off for sure.
Good luck with tightening it up. Only crit is-- I would brighten up the highlights. That would help show where the focus of the picture is supposed to be.
Keep it up!

First, I like your tones here. Your lighting is very subtle, but carries the mood of the piece very well. The piece has a very nice balance of stillness and dynamics. Your command of the human body in motion is very evident here. Well done.
Second, I have what is probably a stupid question: Are the samauri arranged randomly, or is their arrangement a kanji? Yes, I have an overactive imagination.
Best of luck in the Challenge!

No, I didnt have Kanji in mind when I did the picture. I just saw the guys in the middle like an S-shape kinda thing and to have a nice flow of some sort. Perhaps the picture is a little hard to read. I should have brougth more focus on the bottom part and made the middle section more blurry/action/dreamish. Still a wanted it to have the style of a monochrome japanese painting. Afterwards maybe I should have change a few if things...I will have that in mind to next time but I think it came out pretty good anyway.
good luck to all ov ya!
