I've just finished up on a project and I'm looking into newer and better rigs and character set up for our next game (which will obviously be a next gen console game). Has anybody out there used the 'shave and a haircut' plugin for Maya before? If so, how good is it?
Has anybody got a better way of doing hair in Maya that can be exported into a game engine, but that works really well and looks next gen?
I've looked into setting up the hair by driving the joints in the hair by Maya cloth. It's nice, but I know there will be problems in the long run from it, especially on a complex character with long hair.

I'd really appreciate your expert opinions.

Shave is a great plugin, but it most likely will not do you any good on a real-time project.
Your best bet might be to have textured geometry for the hair, and then rig that to some bones controlled by Maya's dynamic curves.

maya6 contain new HAIR system and it is really cool.
