View Full Version : meshmooth trouble

Im having currently a big problem.
I have a character rigged with bones pro in Max 6.1 and a meshsmooth modifier on top.
I have set the meshsmooth modifier to 'disabled in viewport'.
After i rendered a frame the animation process of the boned character gets extremely slow.
I mean updating the viewport needs about 10-20 seconds while the CPU is at full level when i e.g.animate the arm through IK.
When i remove the meshmooth modifier from the stack all is fine again!
If i add one again and turn it off in view (i tried all possible version unchecking things and checking) again animation of the bones results in a crawl.
If i reload the file again all is responsive, until i render a still.

Anyone has an idea?

I've found that meshsmooth with a high number of iterations (anything more than 2) can be very taxing on ones cpu. That is probably the culprit.

hi lamarvenoy

the problem is that it is turned off (disabled in views) and though pounding my cpu!
According what i know a disabled modifier shouldnt do anything... but obviously its
different with meshsmooth.. at least i have no explanation.

Lower the meshsmooth iteration to 1. and disable it while animating. :)

This was a known bug in Max6, even when disabled in viewport meshSmooth would still slow things down.

Best thing that you could do is write a script that would add meshSmooth to tagged objects at render time.

thanks PEN

youre right i will do a script.
I have looked at discreet
support database but no notion of this problem

maybe, although this is a random thought... place an edit mesh on the top of the stack. not sure if it will help in this situation but I've heard somewhere that it can improve the viewport speed.

Try what Ian said. Worked for me when I was on Max6.
