I havent drawn the background yet, im still developing the character.

Okay… here are some really, REALLY rough concepts for the environment. I realize most of these looks like incoherent babble, but they help me weed through the possibilities.
She is going to be smelling/looking at a rose bush of red roses, and behind her they are going to be frantically painting the white roses red. She is going to have a way snobby vibe to her.
I want it to be in a rose garden, with topiary type rose bushes. Right now I’m struggling with keeping areas open for the servants (2 I think, and I’ll explain later why I’m only going to have two) and not making it look so flat. I having some trouble with the far, far background. What should I put on the horizon line?
Should I maybe work a guillotine in the background somehow? Subtly.

These are some concept designs of the guys that will be painting the roses red. Originally I was only going to have 2 doing it. B/c they were going to be the 2 jokers from the deck of cards...but sketching it out it looks better with an whole entourage going at the whole garden at once.
I'll post it once I have the roughts finished... and then to the final LINE ART,
bum... bum... BAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM!!

No worries, I'm still working on the Queen of Hearts one as my primary.

I really like the Queen. The Huntress is a really sweet piece too, but I have a personal thing for Lewis Carrol's works. :) I like the pose you have sketched up in the little thumbnails of her holding a bud and turning back to her minions. I must say I like your take on the queen of Hearts, very ... heartless, no? I look forward to seeing where both the Queen and the Huntress go.

Hunter and Tiger is being done by someone else. I suggest you stick with your primary idea because no one has done it yet. I think the tigers position is the same as that other artist did.

Hi frak, lovely concept work thus far. I'm with the masses on the fact that it's the better idea... I know I've seen another concept with a tiger and his master as an arabic looking warrior with the tiger in almost exactly that pose. But the queen is looking pretty amazing, the colour combination in her dress is one of my favourites. And now I have the disney song that accompanies that scene stuck in my head... "we're painting the roses red, we're painting the roses red...."
great stuff, keep it up!
Naomi
04-22-2005, 06:22 PM
yewp, i get it. :)
i have to agree with the last post, i really liked her dress. and i like the fact that this is a differnt queen when compared to so many illustrations i´ve seen of her. fun stuff!

How do you guys like the crown? Too wonder woman-esk? SHould I make it into a full crown? I dunno, and I would love any suggestions.
frak3
04-23-2005, 12:20 AM
Okay, my original concept did not have her holding the severed head in the final, that was just for a acharacter study thing... do you guys feel that I should leave the severed head in the illustartion? Maybe add a hat that the others are wearing?
Naomi
04-23-2005, 12:55 AM
i really enjoyed the severed head - it shows how vicious this queen can be...
though, i have a question - is this part of the visual concept, or that´s sorta how it´s gonna look? Í like your idea of having them paint the roses red... i was just wondering, because i don't get the idea just looking at this picture. you know?
anyways... that´s it.
cheers

I think the colors work really well, though the plum gets a little lost next to the red. As to the crown design ... I like it as more of a tiara like shape rather than a full crow. But if you're not happy with it, try giving it a few more points and see if that does anything for you. I think the severed head could work, portent of what's to come to the rest of her servants. But there are other ways you can imply their impending doom. It's looking really good.

Sweet pictures! Since you mentioned it, I agree that queenie's crown looks like Wonder Woman's. Since she's all about her roses and her dress can be looked as an inverted flower, why not incorporate thorns into the design of her crown? It would match her "thorny" personality (rimshot:D ). I think I prefer her holding a rose rather than a severed head, especially if the rose is dripping red paint. If you've got some free space in the background you could include some guards chasing a guy who's holding a white paintbrush.
Let's see the layout! I can't wait to see more. I'm also a Lewis Carroll fan.

05-09-2005, 04:27 AM
I would keep the servant's costumes fairly drab and earthy, that way they do not clash with the woman's red dress. Her dress should be the most saturated thing in the illo in my opinion.
Nice piece. Can't wait to see the final!

I'm afraid I must agree with limousine. I think that, had you worked on it a little, you would have achieved a beautiful image. As it stands, my favorite part is the rose bushes. I think you executed them very well.
However, the castle in the background does not look as if it has the same standard of finish as the areas around the front. You should have introduced a little more variation of color, put in some clouds and so on. However, this is a lovely picture so I'm not going to toss it to the ground at all.
I would very much like to see this brought to completion.
Good luck and hope to see you again in the future!
I really like the image, do you have a higher resolution version, else it looks so tiny on my desktop :)
