Sorry, I don't really understand what you mean with "orbit". I'm only 15 Years old and I don't know any other meaning for orbit than the one in space :D.
Could you like post a screen or describe it different, then I'd be gald to help you!
Sincerely,
Phil

when you click and orbit (tumble) the camera around an object while you are working in perspective mode. you know, using ALT+LMB?
in c4d, the default is reverse of what maya is. It's setup to navigate around as if you were flying a plane.

Hmm, I checked all the preferences. I don't think you can reverse it. Also I was using a different 3d App at first, where the orbit was also the other direction. I had a few probs with maya at first, but after a few days you'll get used to it...
Sorry!

I think I know what you mean.
you are asking yourself, on what maya´s camera is focused.
you are used from cinema that the momentary selected object is the center of interest.
in maya this cof is not bound to that, it ether focusable on the selection by pressing "F"
or you move it by hand.
best way to do so is to go into 4 windows view, unhide your perspective camera then use the manipulator tool (press T)
all this sounds more confusing then it is.
actually you will enjoy maya´s navigation a lot, once you got used to it.
maya can seem big and confusing, but working with it shows its speedy sides.
have a good start

I am pretty sure that there is no official preference for inverting the aiming of the perspective camera in Maya.

LOL
Months ago I was using C4D and I was very upset that I cannot have the same camera moving as Maya. Sorry for hijacking the thread but I want to reverse the question: How to make C4D camera moves look like the one of Maya?

edit > preferences > document > use the center option in the dropdown for the center of interest (this is only in 9.1 btw)
also check the "reverse orbit" checkbox in the first tab of the preferences
in the perspective panel menus, there is a submenu called Camera Tools, where you have all you need for the camera
