View Full Version : question about MAX3\4 keyboard input awareness (or lack thereof)

I've been working a bit with MAX lately and I'm at wit's end over this stupid error. It's always happened to me and I've heard that it's happened to a couple other people I know that use it far more than I do.

Randomly, and for no apparent reason, MAX will sometimes disable a select few of my keyboard shortcuts... both custom and default. I'll be using it like normal and all of a sudden either move, zoom, min\max toggle, rotate, or the entire menu system's keyboard shortcuts will simply stop working entirely. It's always one, two, sometimes even three of these that stop working, in varying combinations. And it's not even necessarily these specifically because I've had some other random ones stop working that I don't remember specifically.

All the keyboard assignments are completely unchanged, I haven't hit the keyboard shortcut override toggle, I haven't opened any new windows in MAX or even switched between any tabs. Nothing at all has changed, and yet, these keys just stop working randomly, for variable periods of time.

I'm on a P3 600 w\384mb ram, GF4 MX and GF2 MX [dual monitors], a 20gb and 40gb HD with plenty of swap space, no other 3d apps open, running Windows 2000, freshly rebooted. I've used several different keyboards, and it's happened on dozens of installations in Win98, 98SE, NT4, and W2K, even on different computers that have been untouched by MAX, and yet, it still happens, and for the life of me, I can't figure out if it's something I'm doing or if the program just has terribly serious difficulties monitoring simple keyboard input. I can't imagine that a program this important and widely used could have such a glaring and consistent defect, but I can't find any explanations at all for it...

Why does this happen? Has anyone else had this happen?

And I've had it happen with every version of MAX since 1.2, and it's one of the main reasons I don't use it except on unfortunate occasions where it's absolutely, unavoidably necessary.

Is there some way to stop this? It's not like I have any difficult and complex keyboard setup or anything, I only change like five settings from the default. It's even two separate fresh installations of MAX3 and MAX4 on a consistently scandisked\defragged HD. :\

Hey ...

this started to happen to me 2 month ago, strange thing is, before i worked a few month without this problem ( maybe it's the latest updatepatch from discreet ? )

a solution is to switch from the create to modify panel and back again (or vice versa) than the shortcuts should work again.

Ah, finally, an easy way to circumvent the pain. Next time it pops up I'll definitely do that. Thanks man. :)

..that sounds quite weird indeed. With all the points you mention I'm mostly inclined to blame some loose poltergeist..

Just to go over the usual suspects, do you have anything at all that your setups has had in common? Soundcard, motherboard, some legacy device, etc?

I've never heard of this before, nor has it happened to me, despite quite the reconfigurations of many hotkeys. Have you tried contacting Discreet?, they might be able to come up with some thoughts, idunno...

I was thinking, do you have any special regional or keyboard settings? If you check "Regional Options" in the Control Panel, is there anything out of the ordinary going on there? Maybe multiple keyboard layouts or input options installed?.. idunno.. just pondering here.

Oh and a last stab in the dark, have you defined keyboard-shortcuts that makes Windows launch various programs?
