Title: The Leopard Queen
Name: Jim Talbot
Country: United States
Software: Animation Master

This is my entry in Hash Inc.'s Animation: Master March Image Contest: Fantasy.

Completed in version 11 of Animation:Master with textures created by hand in Photoshop. I was trying to emulate the flavor and mood of Frank Frazetta's paintings.

Please critique the textures, in particular. Comments are very welcome.

Thank you.

Very Well Done. But I think you captured more of Boris Vallejo's style and posing. If this was Frazetta, you would have had to change the male figure to a Conan/Viking type character, and lose the female. But still, well done.

Thank you! I agree it's more Boris-like in looks, mainly because his characters were more realistic, though exaggerated, compared to Frazetta's impossible-but-believable anatomy. Frazetta had plenty of females in his work.:)

This looks really nice. I particularly appreciate how you used the 3 side stairs and the jars in the composition to drive attention to the queen and how you used the leopard to drive attention to the warrior. Very effective play with opposition. And the caracters are superb.

And another thing I appreciated, there is a story in this image. Something is happening between those two characters. They are not just standing there and showing off. We can read what's in their mind. Leopards included.

Beautiful image Jim :applause:
Wonderful 'stage' lighting and of course perfect modelling and textures.

Is it all maps, or are there some materials there?

Thanks, guys.

All texture maps, no procedurals. The decals render much faster than the procedural materials. I guess I'm not very patient.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim, Stellar work as usual. It got my vote and I would say that it was my favorite. I like the way that you have lit it in the painterly way that frazetta did. I think that the computer medium makes it a little more Boris V though.

My only crits would be that I would like to see a little more detail in the highlights and maybe the gentlemans head could be angled a little towards the lady?

It is certainly an intriguing composition and I like the way that the lady is the one with the power.

Thanks for the comments!

John, I'd like to say that the gent was keeping his eye on the big cats too, but I just really liked how his head turned out, so I didn't want to waste it. :)

I like the concept. The subject matter does remind me of a Boris/Frazetta piece as well.
Looks like something you would see on the the cover of an Edgar Rice Burrough's novel.
As far as crits: The texture around the neck of the leopard in the foreground seems to be stretching and blurring.
Also, the skin texture on the people looks too shiny and plastic.
Overall, a nice atmosphere created with this piece. Nice colors and subtle lighting.

The texturing is really great. I have to learn that as well now. Still stuck with the modelling. Would this way of texturing fit together with toonrendering with shading with "toon with fall off" as well, as I might be heading for this look?

Concept and composition for this image is very very good!

The models are all great, expect for the beast legs. The one on top of the stairs doesn't look believable.

The materials are good in general. Were you going for realism? Her clothing should be more soft and less plastic. Perhaps more translucent.

The set textures are very good, but I don't like those dark marks on the vases. A cleaner material would work better in my opinion.

Too much specular on the characters' skin?

I really like the story on this picture. The tension and menace in it are perfect! :)

Wow this a cool style. I looks very illustrated while still maintainig the "depth" of 3D. The lighting and athmosphere are great too.

What a dilema he is in. In his position I think I would just say "blow it" and die a happy man.

Wow Jim, that's just fantastic work! You really do push that software in to territory few can.

I do have a few thoughts. I like how you laid out the image but I think if you played around a bit more with lighting you can make it even stronger. For instance, the initial focus of the picture is the man and the woman so I think that lighting the pic so that the man, the stairs and the woman stand out more would create a good line for the eye to follow. From the man and up to the stairs to the Leopard Queen. Right now there are so many bright spots the eye tends to wander more then it should (IMO that is). Toning down the background, vases, etc would help as well. Also tweaking the leopard on her rights front leg to make it a bit thinner and less bright would help as it would draw less of the initial attention to it. The leopards should be something noticed after the man and the woman as they are a threat but secondary as I think the guy's focus is on the hot betty :)

Also dropping specularity on her outfit and skin could look a little beter as well.

I think dropping the sword in his hand a bit to show more weight or lift it up a bit to show more tension as right now it's tangent is almost 90 degrees and seems a little odd.

Still, that is one danged fine image Jim. Your work just continues to blow me away, a true artist. I think you could create a masterpiece with chewing gum and twine if you had to.

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for your overly kind comments, Brian! :)

Yes, there are definitely some areas that could use tweaking. The leopards alone have quite a few things that need attention, but at least for the time being, I'm done with this image. I already spent too much time on it. I've got other things going now.

Thanks,
Jim
