I am trying to create a 3D dancing female character (caprice). I have run into big problems trying to find a solution for long flowing blonde hair. I used shag hair and got a style that I was happy with when still. The problmes started when using dynamics. I got really horrible jumping/spiking problems. By cutting down the deflector to a minimum and trying to pin the top half of the hair down as much as possible, using inertia and weighting. I have got a solution that is almost working, except for a couple of frames where there are still really dramatic jumps/spikes.

I'm using Max 6 and Shag Hair.

Here is a video clip of the problem

Oh yeah, please ignore the horrible rigging as it's just testing for the hair.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Mik

came across this prob too some time ago.
im not shure what it was now but you might check
whether 'fix shape and density' is on

hope this helps

btw. very good motion in your clip, looks very convincing

Cheers mate, I will investigate using fix shape/density setting.

Also I have a question about setting up the original splines. I have built them all flowing around the shoulders to start with so that they are all out of the colliders at the start of the animation.

I was wondering if it would be better to build the hair as if it was hanging straight down from her head (going through the shoulders) and then let the dynamic solution get the strands out of the colliders?

Onwards! Must conqure the Shag Hair!

Hmmm, still no joy. I have tried both fix shape/density but neither seem to have any effect on the dynamics. I have chosen a reference frame where there is no jumping or spiking problems. The fix settings seem to only effect non-dynamiced hair.

heres a screen shot for my simulated hairs and the deflectors.

I can't understand why that one strand jumps so far out. There is no huge dramatic jump in the deflectors at this point so I don't see whats causing my problems.

Am I doing something wrong or is this sort of problem to be expected with Shag Hair?

If needs be I can just paint over the problem frames and botch it that way, but I'd rather get to the bottom of my problems with Shag Hair.

Is there anything else out there that will give better results than Shag Hair? I have heard of Shave n Cut and pait Effects are there Max equivelents for these?

Thanks

Mik

i think you should avoid open edges on the colliders.
Im quite shure this is the issue.
Better use a primitve and pull it out according the body shape.
Else you might consider running simcloth on your hair. This way you can use the def.mesh as collider. ShavenCut is a subscribers goody for 3ds max7.5.
You might check ornatrix as well theres still a free beta downloadable
dont know the url yet - just google for it.

Initialy I had the whole of the mesh body as a deflector. I seemed to get even more extreme problems with that and also it took a long time to calculate. Once I started to cut the ddeflector down I got much more stable results.

I will try using a modified Sephere and see what results I get.

If you get a chance would you mind running through what you mean about using cloth sim. I'm not quite sure which part I should apply the cloth sim to. The simulated strands or the actual splines?

Thanks for the help!

You can use sim-cloth for dynamics. Select the hair-object and in the parameters
rollout change to cloth mesh. Then apply the simcloth modifier to the hair and to the colliders.

SimCloth can be found here:
