Malachi D. Maloney has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7287)

Latest Update: Final Image: "Obedience Training"

"Obedience Training"

Here's my final image. It's as finished as it's gonna get, considering how much time is left. I would've liked to do a more complicated pattern on the big rug (among other things), if time had permitted...

Anyways, I'm writing out my story now, should have it ready within the hour.

Thanks to those of you who stopped by and left comments and suggestions to show your support. I really appreciate it. =D

Thanks again.

Here are the finished character sketches. Now it's time to focus on the environment. I know I want something drab and grey, kind of Adams Family meets Tim Burton. The Slave will be crawling down the stairs to be scolded by the Master for chewing up her toy doll, which will be torn up and strewn through the house. Other than that, I'm just going with the flow. Probably go watch some Burton flix to get in the mood... Thanks for lookin'. =)

Wow, Thats a great entry, although i have one crit.

The back legs seem a little far out, they should be more underneath his bodt rather than hangin out, Hope this helps!!

The line art for the background is almost done. Just need to add some finishing touches... I was thinking about some weird little chairs sitting next to the door? Also want to add some candles and candle holders lining the inside of the staircase. Maybe add put a painting on the wall if I can fit it.

Thanks for the feedback J2XA. =)

Trying to find some time to finish up the line art, maybe I'll be able to squeeze in a couple hours tonight after work...

Pretty much done with the lines. Surly some things will change during painting, as they usually do.

Moving on to setting up my lighting and values... Hopefully I'll have something more to show soon.

Hehe! Interesting stuff, Malachi! The monster looks so miserable under girl's control! :D
Please, do something to that door. It's really painful to look at, unless you're after some Alice in the Wonderland feeling. And gererally perspective is off a lot. Refering to the girl the horizon line should be much lower. However,I know you're going to do some seriously nice painting job for this ;)

the distorsion perspective seems strange to me.. but the idea is great :)

like the design of the girl :)

Vectorius

this is a great concept and a good sketch..however it seems that is an perspective error with the girl...she seems to me out of the perspective...

Good luck!:)

Thanks for the feedback folks. =)

TeemuR~ Yea, I'm kinda going with an "Alice in Wonderland/Beetlejuice" thing with the door. The perspective's not off, it's meant to be misshapen, same for the slanted slates that line the stairway and the way the stairs angle out towards the landing. Thanks again for the comments and kind words. =)

Neozoom~ See comments on distortion above. Thanks for commenting. =)

Fiolka Alexandre~ I think you might be right, see looks a little flat. I'll try to fix that for sure.

Ok, hopefully I'll have some more to show soon. Keep those comments and suggestions coming. =)

Take care,

Finally got a few hours to do some work on this. Just setting up my values, lighting and color. This is in it's very preliminary stages, still a lot of work to do...

Jpeg came out darker than the original. I'll lighten things up next update to compensate for this.

Thanks for lookin'. =)

Oh! The skull candle looks like something out of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge! Boy, I loved that game! The house looks great too! My only crit right now is that the figures don't match the background. I don't know why, but there's the odd feeling that they don't belong there. Probably because I'm thinking more towards Guybrush Threepwood-like characters.

All the best!

That's a very good ambiance...nice colors and nice feeling!!:) You can maybe add a red carpet on the staircase..and you should durts the stair..add some cracks and some breaks..

It's looking good man keep going on this way!

liquidwerx
05-03-2005, 12:43 AM
Thanks for the feedback folks! =)

I'll keep all of your comments and suggestions in mind. I think the red carpet on the staircase is a great idea, actually something I've already been toying with.

The monster will be very shinny and covered with scales, bumps and all kinds of nasty stuff. Walls won't only have cracks and such, but I'm also planning on wall papering the staircase and entryway with some kind of morbid print.

As you can probably tell, I've still got lots and lots of work to do on this. I'll try to at least have a small update ready in a day or two.

Thanks again for the feedback, it's much appreciated. =)

Take care,
M

I really like the feel of this one... in a creepy kind of way. It has the feel if a brothers grim tale.

At the moment, the light feels a little disconnected from the scene but I guess you will make thing tie in more with time. Actually, I quite like the way that the bg is flat like a stage prop.

As far as a story's for this piece is concerned; I'm afraid I don't have a detailed, or fantastic story for it at all...

When I first read the theme for this contest, the first thing that popped into my mind was my Great Dane puppy, Elvis. Who, I recently took through obedience training.

I often find people are intimidated by him because of his size (115+ lbs.), but little do they know, he's only an 8 month old pup. Who's only wants in life are to get petted and chew on things...

It was this whole "overgrown baby" idea, that inspired this piece. The creature (slave) is being disciplined by the young girl (master), because he's just chewed up her favorite stuffed doll. I wanted to show the slave as being "scary" in appearance, while still showing his timid nature toward his master.

As far as the piece itself is concerned; Pretty much the only thing I'm happy with, is the slave/creature. He came out how I wanted him to for the most part, but the rest of the piece was rushed from concept, to the final detail rendering. I was already slammed with work when I took this contest project on, so my schedule played a big part in the lack of quality in this piece.

But, once I had finished the slave, I figured that even if it had to be rushed, I needed to finish the whole piece. I could have done a lot better though, if I would have planned the composition and environment better, etc., etc... So, I honestly can't be upset by the lack of attention my entry has received, because it really isn't all that interesting to look at. ;)

Oh well, it was definitely a learning experience. I don't think I've ever tried to do an abstract-ish background like this before and it's one of the few times I've ever drawn a child.

Big thanks again to those of you who dropped a line in this thread to show support or offer advice. You guys rock! :)

Good luck to all of you on your entries!

Hey, thanks for the feedback folks. :)

TwistedReality~ Thanks for the complements. As far as tips on getting work goes; best advise I can give, is to constantly keep self-promoting, no matter how many doors get closed on you. I think rejection can be the toughest enemy for any artist to face when starting out. Just remember to keep your head up and keep your nose to the grind stone. Some luck and a good bit of networking deosn't hurt either. ;) Hope this was of some help to you and thanks again for the complements. :)
