View Full Version : edge weights
dpx2001 04-07-2005, 12:29 AM is there a way in modo to maintain your edge weights when you go to another program like maya or whatever? so far I have just been sub dividing the mesh before export, but I am sure there must be a better way! thanks.

the weighting should ,somewhat, carry over. In maya the edge can only be at .5 or 1 (sharo or halfway). Modo's edge weights can be anything in between.

hmm. i'm not exactly sure what to do transfer into maya. as of current, I am exporting my model from modo as a *.mb file, and opening it up just as as a standard maya scene in maya. however, I am not sure what to do from there. i tested it out with a sub-d cube, and in maya it seemed as though nothing transfered over. here are some screen grabs toshow you what I did: to simplify things, I started with a cube.

after that I hit tab to go to sub d:

after that I adjusted the edge weights:

then I saved it as a maya .mb file and opened it in maya and got the fallowing:

I then conververted polygons to sub d, and got this:

for some reason I am not getting the edge wheights to transfer across. if you know what is the next step, I would greatly apreciate it!!
thank you very much!!

You will have to freeze your object for that to work in maya if I recall.

Freezing will result in having additional geometry in other places too which,I assume,is not what the OP has in mind,he only want selective edges to be weighted...
Why not use micro bevels instead? You won't run into any problem with those, except if you're on a polygon restriction.

thank you for the suggestions! they both worked, and both work for exactly what I need to do.
thanks again!
