Servant: The Earth
Taking off the gloves of civility for this piece, so excuse the vulgarity. If it offends anyone I'm sorry. It's a necessary element to depict this painting truthfully and acurately as I have envisioned it.
Thought about incorporating a few more elements to give it a Bosch kind of feeling. Will post them shortly. ANy suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Best luck to everyone.

More Coloring WIP. Putting tones and values into the figure, improving the proportions, working on composition. Would appreciate some comments - good or bad.
Any comments would be great.
Hope to get a few.

The Painting is dedicated to the Memory of Crazy Horse,
War Chief of the Lakota Sioux, who in 1875 put it so plainly and elegantly :
"ONE DOES NOT SELL THE EARTH UPON WHICH THE PEOPLE WALK"
And is also dedicated to :
Those who know the difference between
"Real Feedom and the Illusion of Freedom"

THE MAMMON VS THE EARTH
Been working on the lighting off and on most of today. Started to work on the face a little. Trying to achieve a multi-light source effect with different kinds of lighting. Reflective, spiritual, direct, indirect, etc. Hope I can keep a handle on it. Entering into a new frontier for me. But am enjoying every minute of it. I love to experiment, seems to be my nature.
Could use some helpful advice and opinions.
I don't bite most of the time anyway, ha ha.
So come on and give me some help please.
Thanks

Hello, your concept and drawing is very well done. The man need's alot more texure in his skin and the lighting right now is casting a red glow on him. Wouldn't red flame cast more of an orange yellow glow on him? I can't notice a skin color of his own. You also have alot of grey shadow's.
I noticed in the previous posts the earth was round, and now is's more oval shaped. I'd keep it round because at first I thought the oval was a large blob of otherworldly spirit. Not an earth.
These are my opinion's feel free to ignore them if you know where your going.

The Mammon vs The Earth
"ONE DOES NOT SELL THE EARTH UPON WHICH THE PEOPLE WALK" : Crazy Horse 1875
This morning worked on the earth a little, made it round again. Put the \\\"sold\\\" sign back up , put green in the gray tones and shadows. Made drop of blood at end of golden stake smaller, made flames more orange, less pink.
Next will work on a few details.
Am having alot of trouble making the tear coming out of the eye look real. Same problem with the drop of blood.
Would like these two elements to look super-realistic.
Anybody good at these kind of details - now is the time to lend a helping hand to a fellow artist.
After all we are all in the same boat together.
Will also work on the earth and the reflections of color on the mammon more and the sign also.
Need some expert help in these areas.
Thanks
Glenn

Worked on this for a few hours this morning. Backlighting on figure, reflections from flames on shovel and chain, also worked on drop of blood, golden stake, sign, the eye in sky which is the Great Spirit and the tear coming from it. Seems like it improved a lot since last update. Starting to resemble a painting, I think.
Still has a long way to go.

Worked on the symbol he is holding up in his hand. Finally decided on how to represent it without words. Decided on cross. After all, what is life without faith, no matter what faith it may be, and what is faith without freedom. Seems to me that those two elements, life and freedom, both become the property of the mammon along with the earth after it is sold. The Ankh, and the earth that is being pierced by it, are symbols of life. He is sapping the lifeblood out of all of life. All life is servant and services the mammons insatiable appetite for power and wealth. He devours all and in the end devours himself. He has become master of all and all have become his servants. While at the same time he has become a slave of his own nature.

Hello everyone :)
I remember reading a book on the actual words of the indigenous people of North America. Written down by European interpreters as they came in contact with the different tribes over a 500 year period. Some of the most beautiful words I remember I think were spoken by Sitting Bull Spiritual Leader of the Sioux or Dakota as they prefered to be called. The words went something like this: Every morning when I wake up I like to walk upon the ground barefoot just so I can feel the heartbeat of the earth below my feet. He said this in the mid 1800s long before the Gaia theory of the earth as a living entity. Thought I would incorporate his thought of the earth being alive and having a heart into this painting. Seemed to fit perfectly with what I am trying to say with this painting. Also am thinking about keeping the word sold on the symbol of life the ankh. Is a key element of my concept with the word there it leaves no room for ambiguity. Just posting the evolution of my thoughts as I progress with this concept. Thought you might like to see how I interpret them visually.
Once again could use some helpful opinions, suggestions for improvements and constructive criticism.
Gives me an incentive to continue.
Thanks Glenn

Hello Everyone
Before I had the Great Spirit separated from the Earth. The Sacred Eye seemed like it was disengaged, just a distant observer. Didn't seem right to me somehow. Now it is engaged. The Earth and the Great Spirit are part of each other, reflected in each other, joined by the force that binds all. Pure energy with a concience. The Creator, the creative force of life and the Earth are now one and the same. Just an evoloving idea of mine.
Me? Ha! There is no me. There is only us; a collective conciousness of all.
Thought about painting the mammon's skin, but what color skin does the mammon have? He exists in every race of people. Seems he is just a shadow. A reflexion of his insatiable greed. An evil spirit that has taken human form and plagues all of life.
Just thowing out some philosophies that go with this painting.
Hope it comes out clear that my concept is Mammon as Master: a personification of wealth and avarice as an evil spirit. And all of Life as Servant.

Finished my painting so I created a little mythology to go with it, instead of vice versa...
Here it is.
Hope you enjoy.
In the beginning there was the Great Spirit. Pure Energy with Consciousness; but no Body. Just a Dream not yet dreamt. Longing for Form, it dreamt of a body, so it could be alive within itself. It dreamt of the Earth. A special place it could feel at Home in. Its very own Body. Its Temple to Itself.
It eventially grew Tired and Lonely and finally fell asleep where it dreamt of Life.
Its dream was populated with all the Life Forms it could Imagine. But, like all Dreams, they can change from Pleasurable to Nightmarish in an Instant. And that is exactly what happened.
The Great Spirit had a horrendous Nightmare. It dreamt its Heart had been Pierced and its Life's Blood was being Sapped by a Giant Parasite it had Created in its Imagination: The "Mammom".
Startled, it awoke from its Nightmare and left its body: the Earth.
And Once Again became Pure Spirit:
Energy with Consciousness, but now it had Memory.
As it looked back at its former Body, it realized its Nightmare had become a Reality. And it Wept.
It Wept itself to Sleep and dreamt a new Dream, that had the Memory of the Old Dream in it. And it Wondered if what it saw was Real - or just a Dream within a Dream.
In between the Mind and the Hand that Wields the Power of Reality or Dream, there has to be a Heart of Love and Kindness with Compassion. Or Life, Reality and Dream become a Hell: a Place and/or Situation that is not worth Living in or Dreaming about.

ABOUT THIS CHALLENGE - A PERSONAL OPINION
I think the Universal Collective Conscious has made itself visible. Whether it has been done consciously or unconsciously, doesn't really matter.
What matters is that it showed itself in this challenge.
Think about it.
Never before in the history of art have so many talented imaginations been gathered to concentrate and work on one theme simultaneously.
Art and the Artist can Amaze the World and Change the World for the Betterment of All, hopefully, if just given the opportunity.
Perhaps a new Age of Enlightenment has arrived!

Hello Glenn,
I especially wanted to pay a return visit since you have shared alot of your time for me, and my efforts.... but ...
Seems I am too late to be able to annoy you with crits!
I wish I was able to notice your thread earlier in order to be part of your creation prcess as well
As to how I get it, you happen to have a very complex manner of thinking and a simiallar method of expressing it... there are alot of individual factors through out your work that give out many messages of it's own.
You have a powerful control over colours and seems you tried to make the bets of it.
I don't know if you have heard of the Sufi, where as they explain the creation of the universe as:
God; being pure, beauty, everything known to us as good; decides to look into the nothingness in order to see himself...
And through this reflection drew out the universe that has bits of God in it (Positives) and bits of nothingness (negatives) evenly spread. So they believe that to be able to get in touch with God, you must be intuoch with his creations.... since a little bit of God is in everything.
But strangly enough it crossed my mind as I read your unique story. it was one hell of a concept.. even though it was a late commer.. a tiny bit.
Would you have had this story in the begining... would you have drawn something simiallar?
Well not much to say other than you seem to have put some good work into your entry. I only wish for it to bring the best for you! Good luck Glenn!

Hi Black
Just wanted to thank you for taking a peek at my challenge painting and for the nice words you said about it.
As I was painting it, I was trying to combine and blend different philosophies from around the planet in a symbolic manner. I tried to depict the mammon as a threat to all of them. As the negative side of globalization. I believe there is a yin and yang to everything in life. The story about it I created after finishing it. My influences for story were mostly Native American creation myths, Austrlian aboriginal dream-time mythology and yes a little dash of hinduism. Tried to stick with the oldest philosphies on the planet. Seems to me that they are the original thoughts on life and are probably closer to the truth if there is such a thing.
Thanks again for looking at my work.
Take care

Oh no, it's not a practice of hinduism.. infact it is a very recent variation of Islam...
Yes now that you say it, I see well the roots of Native American creation myths :)
My mother had this version of hers about religions since a book she had read... she would call it that they all have the same goals and attitude as if generated from the same guidlines.. just that the practice is diifrent and so is the story...
It IS a fact that the whole basis of what yo come up to in the end is to try to be a nice guy/girl. To be able to look at yourself in the mirror years to follow...
As for the myths.. the older they get the cooler the story. I love the subsitition of knowledge with creativity... At some points it seems that those that we call creative myths seem to be much closer to the facts don't they?
As I read your explanation and looked at your image once more. I was able to realise that in it.
Well deep results come from deep thoughts.
I am glad you cared to share yours with us :)

Hello Berter
Really feel like we have enlightened and added to each other in a very positive way.
Thank you very much for you sincerity and thoughtfulness.
I was mistaken about the Suffi philosophy you mentioned. Too many philosophies going through my mind, with strong similarities, I guess. I was probably thinking about the Janes in India.
Would I be wrong in guessing that the book your mother was reading was Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth? I read it a few years back and it was one of those books among many that have changed and enlightened my world forever. If you haven't read it, you definitely should. Makes it all make sense.
Oh well, my friend, it's been a pleasure talking with you and I hope the best for you and yours always.

It is sort of based up to a reversed version of a meeting set by a row of JApanese generals noting down the vital aspects of battle;
"Once a battle has begun, no one comes out of it victorious... only that one side looses a little bit slower than the other"
I am sure there are some that may think that they have lost something with this challange, with their entry.. but in the long run they have only gained something... If nothing a memory to carry along, and to learn from.
So I presume that many would agree with you that no one has really lost in this one!
Good luck to you with your victory Glenn!

Hi Black
Power is an artist. Power's brush is manipulation. Power's canvas is life, the earth. Power's technique is illusion of division. Power's strategy is conquest. Like I said earlier, there is no me there is only we. When the earth is viewed from afar that becomes crystal clear. All of the politically culturally motivated divisions are absent. There is just a oneness. The divisions have been placed in our minds by power. Divided we are conquered. United as one we are free.
Just a few thoughts for a painting that's been going through my mind for a few years now. If you or anybody you know are interested in making it a team creation let me know. And I will share my vision of it. It is a simple image and a great one. And is crystal clear in my minds eye. Would be even better in 3D and animated.
