I need to create a plasma like effect for a character I am modeling. It is a skeleton encased in plasma or something of the like. I was thinking of using a layered shader and making various transparent layers that would have animated noise added to them to give it a bubbly look. Of course I am not even sure how I would do this or if this is the best way to go about it. If anyone has suggestions on this it would be extremely helpful. I will post a version of the model soon.

what kind of effect? what is the "plasma" effect you're looking for? i mean... when i think of plasma i think of the stuff blood cells float in :P

Almost a gelatin like substance around the bones that is constantly shifted and moving. Think of it like Slimer from the Ghostbusters except the green slime would be more transparent and not quite as bulbous, thus allowing you to see the skeleton structure underneath.

What you could do is make some kind of soft body around the character and make it move with different fields.
Or some kind of particle system could be attached to the body. But I don't really know what effect you want to achive, so it's hard to come up with something for you.

I also do not have Maya close to me right now so I can't try it out.

Your first idea sounds pretty good: just use lots of slightly transparent, shifting layers. I'd also use a volume shader to give it some 'body'. The best thing you can do is get down n' dirty with the hypershade and give it a go: you never know what you're going to come up with:bounce:

I would use a volume shader here. I think you'll find that, by assigning some sort of procedural to the volume of the material, you will get a very nice effect. Of course, with some tweaking.
