Took a look today to upgrade my GeF 4 MX card. I can buy an Nvidia 5500 with 256 ram for 10 dollars cheaper than an ati 9600 with only half the ram. I am being told that it would still be much better to buy the ati card over this. I want to double check here with real modelers before I make the decision. Thanks.

As far as I know the 5500 is going to be slower than the 9600 - 5500 is just a 5200 with slightly different clock rates.

The 256 vs 128 mb argument when comparing those cards is nonexistant because it will not give you any difference in most cases (in 1600x1200 with Anti-Aliasing it might, but both cards are not really meant to run with that settings with current titles like Doom3 ;) ).

As far as modeling goes you can turn both cards into their professional counterparts (Quadro for GF and FireGL for Radeon) by modifying the drivers.
A guide for Radeon is here: http://cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=227800

I'd buy a R9600, especially if you can get a Pro or XT version.

Is the 5500 worth buying? The 6600 GT's are not that expensive, and significantly faster no?

I've been told also that memory on graphics cards these days are a gimmic. So I guess that settles that, the 9600 wins out.

I would go for the Geforce 6600GT, if it is close enough in price (about $200) to what you're willing to spend...

Just make sure you get the AGP version ;) cuz i doubt you have PCIe...
