Certain cd's CD+R/RW I've made over the years with data stored on them and MP3's stored on the others lock up my pc when I attempt to launch those files.

My "MY Computer" goes to Not-Responding, my Desk Top Fades and I have to reboot and the EJECT to get my cd's back.

All of these cd's where made on this pc and have opened in the past before.

what causes them to freeze

My pc uses

WinXP Professional
512 Meg of RAM

100 GIG Hard Drive

The media is probably degrading due to inproper storage or poor quality (cheap) media.

Clean you problem disks and try again. You DVD drive may also need cleaning if it fails to read most disks.

Hi,

Ive had this issue before also, I just cleaned them off good with my shirt, and if they were really damaged, I would put a little bit of toothpaste on the cd and rub it clockwise around a bit evenly, then wash it off. I had a cd that would NOT work at all, after trying toothpaste, it worked, i was amazed!

I've managed to freeze a DVD drive by removing the hard disk that was on the same cable.:hmm:

toothpaste ?

Its an abrasive material which polishes. Why do you think your teeth feel smooth after brushing???
