Does anyone know why this Intel board would just quit on me? I use this computer for Maya strictly, yet, it craps out on me. This is the 2nd board of this type that I've put in my computer. Intel replaced the first one the first time. All this computer is doing right now is just black screen on boot. No POST, no BIOS screen... nothing. PLEASE HELP.
Here's what I know:
- the board had issues with the mouse not working... I would just unplug and replug it in, and it would work again. I did this a couple of times before. Then, the board basically quit on me overnight... LITERALLY
- I'm using an Antec True 550w power supply. I do know that nothing is wrong with it because I hooked the board up to a brand new power supply and still nothing happened.
This exact thing happened to me before... Mouse problems, then it just quits. I'll be checking this thread continuously until I get a new board... Because as of right now - that's all I got.
Is it something that I'm doing? Please help.
Thanks

Are you saying this is intermittent or has it completely died?

nope... gone... I called intel and they still cant figure it out. Though they ARE willing to replace it. But I'm trying to figure out why this is happening. It's completely kaput as far as I know.

Questions for you:

1) PS/2 or USB mouse? I *vaguely* remember reading somewhere about certain USB devices frying motherboards. I think it was the Palm Pilot cradels. Do you have any other USB devices plugged in?

2) Is there a PC speaker plugged into the motherboard? It's the tiny little speaker that just beeps. Usually there's a single beep at startup. Some motherboards have a variety of beep codes to report errors on startup. Depending on the type of problem, the motherboard might be able to report errors via beeps even before going into POST or BIOS screen.

**Not all PC cases come with the speaker

ps2 mouse... a wacom tablet, and and external HD are the only things plugged into my USB. As far as the computer internal speaker is concerned... it's not beeping... though I'm about 99% sure it's connected. ... if it has one at all... ... now that I think about it... I'm not sure if it does. Anyhow, its just black screen. The monitor signal dosnt even come through. I checked the video card and everything else. I explained the situation to the Intel guy (Ernest) and he was baffled, especially when I told him that this is the 2nd motherboard of this type with the same problem... that's why I'm also asking if it's something that I'm doing.

What's the make/model of the video card by the way?

I did a quick Google search for that particular motherboard and found out it has an on-board video card. Intel's website says it's "Integrated ATI* Rage* XL video controller with 8 MB of video memory"

Have you tried putting your monitor on that and booting? I'm guessing you have since you've spoken with a tech support guy and they no doubt have suggested this idea. But just entertain this question for the record. There might be an off chance that the backup battery died or some other means that resetted the BIOS, and possible forcing it to go to the integrated video first rather than the AGP video.

If you feel adventurous, just for kicks, put it on a network with another computer, if you originally gave it a static IP great. Try to ping that address. If it's dynamic, well, put it on a rounter with DHCP. The consumer routers (Linksys, D-Link, etc) have web based interfaces and will even list all current DHCP clients. See if this problem PC shows up in the DHCP client table. The point here is to see if the rest of the system makes it through bootup and gets networking up and running. If indeed it does, than it's gotta be the video that is the problem.

That's a really good idea.

I have indeed tried booting up on the system video card. The AGP card that I have to run Maya and such is a 3DLabs Wildcat VP. I'm going to try and take out the battery and reset the CMOS and BIOS. If it's a no-go, I'll try pinging the computer, but it doesnt sound like it boots... As in, there's no harddrive activity shortly after it's powered up.

Side Question:
Does anyone know what the maximum thermal temperature range that these Xeons operate in? ... I have the new cooler master heatpipes on it, and because they're fanless, I'd definitely recommend it... and they're cooler than the stock wind-tunnel that Intel provides.

Intel says 70-80 Celcius but an intelligent person would not let it go too far above 60.

And yeah, no HD activity is a sign to worry about. I'm out of ideas, sorry. At some point maybe think about taking your losses and just try a different brand motherboard. Personally I think Intel is losing their touch ever since the BX chipset.

Yeah, I know it's not a harddrive issue considering I've run into this problem with the motherboard. Unfortunately, I cant really cut my losses, considering the 7505 is roughly a $500-$600 board.

Maybe I can get Intel to get me another that they DONT make. Any suggestions? I need something that can run Dual Xeons, 8x AGP, and at least 8GB RAM. That kinda narrows it down, but that's comparable to the current one that I have.
Thanks.:)
